Who says you can't detoxify your body?

cucumber lemon, celery, spinach and kale juice

“There is no known way – certainly not through detox treatments – to make something that works perfectly well in a healthy body work better.”

Edzard Ernst, emeritus professor of complementary medicine at Exeter University

Read the article here:

This article is hilarious because it quotes a couple of professors who are in the profession that is most responsible for the worldwide epidemic of drug-induced liver failure and consequent premature deaths.

Cartoon by Colin Livingstone
I attended a practitioner education course earlier this week on the topic of iatrogenic disease which dealt in detail with how the liver and kidneys metabolise (or should I say "struggles to metabolise") prescription medications into less toxic substances in preparation for excretion. In popular terms this is called "detoxification". I learned that there is a medical crisis with drug-induced liver toxicity. Liver damage caused by drugs such as NSAIDs amounts to tens of thousands of people being killed or maimed annually (Paracetamol, for example, is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the Western world

The liver is an astonishingly complex organ that does a number of critical functions including filtering the blood and cleansing the body of wastes and toxins. When it comes to pharmaceutical drugs, we must bear in mind that the liver never had to deal with any of these toxic substances until less than a hundred years ago! It is hardly a surprise that the liver of even the most healthy person struggles to detoxify these alien chemicals. Here is a review of the huge problem of drug-induced liver damage, as well as it giving an overview of how the liver detoxifies drugs and other toxins:

Detoxification processes can be supported and the liver given some protection from harm by supplementing the healthy diet with a variety of nutritional compounds ranging from glutathione to milk thistle. The only debate we should be having about detox is whether or not a person needs to support this natural, ongoing body process with special diets and supplements? I accept that there is no shortage of quackery out there which is why one is best advised to seek the assistance of a knowledgeable health professional, rather than a shop assistant, especially if one suspects harm is being caused by prescription or over-the-counter drugs.

While being laughable, it is still very sad to read articles like these which come across as a blatant and sensational attempt to bag anybody who wishes to promote health beyond the simplistic message:

"Eat healthy, exercise regularly and don't forget to take your meds"

Rest assured that we can do much better than that!

Does taking vitamins only result in "expensive urine"?

When I was studying exercise physiology at Otago University many years ago and, later, sports medicine and nutrition, my lecturers kept going on about vitamin supplements being of no value and all the taker was doing was producing "expensive urine".

The assumed effect of taking supplements is they merely pass through the body and end up in the urine.  In conjunction with this, we were told a person can get all the nutrients they need by eating a "balanced diet" as per the Food Pyramid.

I believed them as I should; after all, who was I to question the conclusions of an esteemed doctor, let alone a professor.  I parroted the "expensive urine" mantra many a time over the years.  I was a fool.  I should have questioned and not merely accepted the statements from those on high as being fact.

Since being introduced to various procedures for testing a person's nutritional status, principally the ICL Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis and the Thyrodine test, I have had a complete change of view, including that it is as good as impossible to maintain balanced nutrition by food alone.  Ageing, disease, stress, pollutants, medications and depleted foods all conspire to produce nutritional imbalances.

By the way, I am cautious to believe any health professional who says somebody is deficient in a nutrient such as vitamin C or magnesium without this conclusion being supported by scientific testing.

How very wrong I was to accept the preaching of my lecturers which, with hindsight, are conclusions that are poorly supported by actual scientific testing.  Professorial, the "expensive urine" statement might be; but it is also very poor science.  The "expensive urine" statement is simple to refute.

I'll leave it for Linus Pauling to give an example of how ridiculous the "expensive urine" statement is:

Here is Linus Pauling announcing that he took ten grams (10,000mgs) of vitamin C and recovered less than 15% in his urine within 24hrs.

Pauling won 2 nobel prizes and was one of the world’s most eminent scientists, certainly no fool. Most all people never take in the optimal amount of Vit C from foods, supplementing with vitamin C makes real good sense.

Polio is not a global pandemic

There has been quite a lot of publicity about polio being on the increase again.  Before you rush out for your vaccine booster, have a read of this article by Mike Adams who gives a surprisingly sensible opinion about the polio hype.

His opinion fits with a theme you will read about often on this blog - the theme that what drives medicine and medical bureaucrats are causes, like vaccines and Tamiflu, that stand to make some people and corporations a very, very large amount of money.  Health issues that do not stand to make vested medical and pharmaceutical interests BIG money are left to languish low on the list of priorities.

Please pay particular attention to his advice about how to improve your resistance to disease.  Its sensible stuff.

(NaturalNews) The sky is falling! The sky is falling! When it comes to infectious disease pandemics, one thing you can always count on is that the World Health Organization will be sounding the alarm whether it's justified or not. Case in point? The WHO's new declaration that polio is a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" (PHEIC). (1)

The WHO officially describes this as "an extraordinary event which is determined to constitute a public health risk to other States through the international spread of disease and to potentially require a coordinated international response."

And just what is this "extraordinary event" of which we should all be so terrified that the entire mainstream media dutifully reports it as a "global health emergency?"
