Is treating hot flashes and sweats in menopausal women with SSRI antidepressants safe and effective?

Statement: Hot flashes and sweats in menopausal women can be treated with SSRI antidepressants.  They don’t need to use hormones.

"This is not only wrong, it is criminal. The use of SSRI antidepressants for menopausal symptoms was never FDA approved, and is a cruel mistreatment and medical victimization of women.  This practice should be halted immediately.  Studies of SSRI drugs show they are no better than placebo for most cases of depression(31), and they are not much better than placebo for menopausal hot flashes. (32)  Synthetic hormones are bad enough, they cause cancer and heart disease.  SSRI drugs like Lexepro,  Effexor and Pristiq are even worse; they are chemically addictive with horrendous withdrawal effects.  Avoid becoming a medical victim.  Stay away."

Gary:
Increasingly, I come across cases of women being placed on antidepressants for menopausal symptoms, anxiety and depression.  While these drugs may give relief and help rescue a precarious situation, the beneficial effect is measured in weeks and not much longer.  The body habituates quickly to the drug and becomes ineffective.  As with nicotine addiction, continued administering of the drugs is necessary just to be able to function during the day, let alone to feel good about oneself.

Side effects of these drugs, such as wild blood pressure fluctuations, weight gain, dermatitis, constipation, reflux and sleep disorders result in the progressive addition of more and more drugs in addition to the SSRI.  This is, in itself, depressing.

There are effective alternatives.  I am personally cautious about any form of exogenous hormone therapy.  The first course of therapy is to work on bolstering the body's natural ability to manufacture and use hormones.  This entails focus on nutritional support of glands such as the adrenals and thyroid.  Get these working well and it is amazing how health in general improves, including a reduction in menopausal symptoms.  If this approach does not work well enough after 6-12 months, then bioidentical hormone therapy may be added to the mix.

Brett Elliot Herbal Detoxification Programme - Feedback from a Happy Camper

".... The programme has been quite amazing really. I have stuck to it and not cheated at all.

As at Sunday I was down to 51kg and I suspect over last few days I have lost a bit more. But my blood pressure has gone down considerably. Over the weekend it was down around 100/65 without medication. Monday it was 117/80 still no medication. This morning – and morning it is usually quote high – it was 128/84 – still no medication.

The other thing that has reduced a lot are the hot flushes. They have reduced to almost not knowing you are having one.

And I have not been taking any other supplements while taking the detox pills – I thought 20 twice a day was enough!!"

Gary responds:
"S" has been a client of mine for about a year when she came to see me about excessively high blood pressure that was not responding favourably to several medications. Blood pressures were excessively high, she was having problems with menopause, she had generalised back and muscle pain and was not looking very well. While it has been a lengthy journey, she is close to ending her long association with blood pressure medications which really were not working for her - as is often the case.

"Body - Heal thyself"

The Brett Elliot Herbal Detoxification programme has been quite brilliant for her as she reports. Many medications upset the motility of the digestive tract and gradually poison the liver. An effective detoxification programme cleanses and nourishes both the liver and the digestive tract.

Managing the Hot Flushes of Menopause

Hot flushes are experienced by more than 70% of menopausal women, and are one of the most common symptoms of this natural process. These occur for some time throughout menopause, lasting anywhere from 1-2 years, and even longer, up to 10 years.

What causes a hot flush?
A portion of the human brain, called the hypothalamus, contain oestrogen receptors, which help to monitor the level of oestrogen produced within the body. This particular brain centre also helps to govern a number of functions including controlling body temperature and sleep.

It is believed that during menopause, the hypothalamus detects declining oestrogen levels, which starts a cascade of hormonal events in the body. Low oestrogen levels stimulate the hypothalamus to send a message to the pituitary gland, which subsequently releases hormones to act on the ovaries. Due to the lack of eggs, the ovaries are unable to increase production of oestrogen, which signals the hypothalamus once more.

This cyclical feedback mechanism also activates the nervous system, triggering dilation of the peripheral blood vessels, especially in the face, neck, and chest. This leads to heat and redness to the skin (flushed), and is often followed by profuse perspiration.

lifestyle tips to keep a hot flush ‘cool’!
1. Manage stress - Stress is often a trigger for hot flushes
2. Wear layered clothing — Practical for managing the fluctuations in body temperature
3. Keep a small spritzer bottle handy — Helps to keep your skin moist

Meno-Life, is a special two capsule herbal formula that includes Black Cohosh, Dong Quai, Red Clover and Soy isoflavones that have been found to help manage menopause symptoms over a full 24 hours. A Daytime capsule provides support for hot flushes, mood swings and energy levels while a special Night-time capsule can help with night sweats, anxiety and relax and prepare the body for sleep.
