"While experts are not certain about the biological mechanism by which calcium supplements may damage the body, studies in the past have linked high levels of blood calcium to more heart attacks and damage to blood vessels", Reid said.

Gary:
The findings of this study are not new news really and stopping taking calcium supplements, while being a beneficial action for most, will do little to improve the overall situation of population risk of heart attack, stroke, dementia and so on. There is just far too much calcium in the modern diet.
Calcium from any source, when in excess, will damage health
High calcium, low magnesium = Calcification of soft tissues, including arteries. Plus osteoporosis. |
When calcium is in excess relative to other nutrients in the body, such as magnesium, sodium, copper, protein and pyridoxine, then it will not go into the bones, but be deposited into the soft tissues including the arteries. Whether the imbalance is due to excess calcium intake, deficiency in others or increased need, the end result is the same: Hardening of the soft tissues.
Excess calcium will cause osteoporosis, not prevent it. When a nutrient is in excess the body is unable to incorporate the nutrient and may, in fact go into excretory mode

How do the experts explain why it is that the countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis, including New Zealand, also happen to have the highest rates of dietary calcium intake? Samoans and Tongans living a traditional native lifestyle and diet have the strongest bones on the planet. When you analyse their diets, it is difficult to find the calcium. How do they explain this? Why is it that they still advise women to consume high calcium foods when there is no evidence of a health benefit - only increased health risk?
If you are a New Zealander, it is your patriotic
duty to drink more milk and eat more cheese.
Calcium in food is Big Business
Milk is Big Business
Osteoporosis screening is Big Business
Osteoporosis Drugs is Big Business
In the audio, the Professor refers to osteoporosis drugs as a further measure to prevent the progression of osteoporosis, saying that these drugs are safe. Drugs to prevent osteoporosis (bisphosphenates) are proving to be harmful and they do not reduce fracture risk - they actually increase the risk after just a few years of use! So, what is the subtle message in this last piece of advice: Is it that we do not trust cheap nutritional supplements, including the calcium ones; but that expensive patented drugs are actually safer? Well they are not. Please feast on these articles on the topic of safety of osteoporosis drugs (Scroll down once the page opens).
Calcium, when in excess, is harmful to health because it deposits in the soft tissues, including the arteries, and not the bones. Bones are living tissue and not just calcium. For healthy bones there must be adequate protein, vitamin D and trace nutrients, including boron, selenium, copper and even the much maligned sodium. If there is too much calcium and not enough magnesium and pyridoxine in particular, the process of calcification of soft tissues will pick up pace and heart attack and stroke will eventuate. Maybe not now, but maybe in 20-30 years.
By my own testing about 80% of the New Zealand adult population is affected by calcium overload. This is because of our diets which tend to be calcium drenched while low in balancing nutrients.
Some consequences of excess calcium to magnesium ratio:
- Insomnia
- Constipation and colitis
- Gall bladder disease
- Irregular heart beat
- Rosy red face especially when stressed or exerting
- Muscle cramps
- Dry, flakey skin
- Wrinkles and loss of elasticity (Turkey neck)
- Thinning skin
- Dermatitis
- Cataracts
- Underactive thyroid
- Fatigue
- Joint arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Sore muscles, tendons and ligaments
- Arteriosclerosis
- Arthersclerosis
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Dementia
Now for the good news: The joint processes of calcification of soft tissues and osteoporosis are not a one way street to miserable health oblivion: These are dynamic biological processes that can go either way: They can be reversed naturally by creating the right conditions within the body. Regardless of age. However; reversing these processes that may have been happening over a lifetime does not happen overnight. It takes time - the rest of your life in fact. So the best time to start the process of reversal is right now.
The first step in your journey is to get a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis completed and then act on the findings. In the meantime, cut out the calcium supplements unless you know for sure that you are one of the less than 5% who really need them, get rid of the calcium fortified foods and drink only full cream milk that has not been homogenised (That's the silvertop milk).

if calcium supplements are required the FORM of the supplements makes a massive difference to hte absorption of the calcium
dolomite is very poorly absorbed,
calcium cabonate again not poorly absorbed
calcium chelate is one of the best absorbed as its in a more naturally occuring form for the body to cope with.
desicated bone is well absorbed.
watch out for cal mag combinations as often the magnesium can be the cheap and toxic form of magnesium oxide.
