Does sugar compromise the immune system?

Gary,
Please put me out of my misery - does sugar compromise the immunity system - reduce "leukocytes sp??" levels in the blood?
I have been told my kid has a cough because she has too much sugar and had poor immunity.
All I can find on
the internet are hundred of references to Dr Stolls claims that sugar does affect immunity.
I know sudden high levels are not advisable - sugar rush - adrenalin injection, etc.
any input appreciated
thanks

John

Dear John
I have absolutely no doubt that excessive sugar compromises child health. Partly because of the direct effects of excessive sugar on the body, including causing harm to the pancreas and
potentially leading to Type II diabetes. There is also the harmful secondary effects caused by sugary foods causing varying degrees of malnutrition. This really applies to nutrient poor processed foods as a whole. Your child needs food that is rich in nutrients. Keep your child away from fat-free foods. Give plenty of fat and exercise and you will have a healthy happy child.

With the other side of my family being Pacific Islanders, I am particularly interested in the impact of the undermining of traditional diets by modern industrialised foods. The effect has been catastrophic on Pacific populations and an end must be put to what is being done for the sake of commercial gain.

Our modern diet is harmful and there is no better way to illustrate this than by the following series of photos that shows the harm done when traditional Pacific Islands diets are replaced by harmful processed "superior" (cough-choke!) European foods:

Photo One
healthy, vibrant happy people with beatutiful facial bone structures. There is almost a complete absence of tooth decay. The facial bones are wide, there is no cramping of the teeth. There is never any need for orthodontic work like braces.

Note the strong jaws and neck muscles - strong enough to lift a 44 gallon drum or to husk a coconut with the teeth! Once common tricks in the Fiji islands to impress the tourists.
Photo Two
No problems getting these healthy Pacific Islanders to smile. Their traditional nutrient dense diets produce strong facial structures that do not cramp or rot the feet. Rich in omega oils and fats, vitamins A, E, D and K they have robust bones and healthy brains. No angry young teenage boys and girls in this population!

Photos three and four
Introduce flour, white sugar and soft drinks that squeeze out the traditional foods and you have rampant tooth rot and catastrophic declines in all measures of health.

Note the subtle loss of facial bone structure and weakening which is apparent even within a single generation of dietary degradation. This leads to the gradual lengthening and narrowing of the face as typically seen nowadays in Westernised populations with the consequent severe cramping of the teeth. Hence the near universal need for orthodontic work nowadays.

Here is the original source of these photos.

Here is a fun video I made of my son about the benefits of a diet that is rich in nutrients and includes raw, full fat milk. No rampant tooth decay, obesity or angry sickly children here!

Stroke study misses the point

Stroke rates have been falling over the past 20 years, but findings from an extensive study have
found that Maori and Pacifi c populations in Auckland are not benefi ting from this drop. Research carried out by HRC Pacific Health PhD scholar Kristie Carter, shows that stroke rates for Pacific people have increased since 1981 to almost double that of New Zealand Europeans.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in New Zealand and a major cause of disability. This number is predicted to double by 2020.

The study has drawn similar conclusions to related research in the United States and the United Kingdom, which showed disparities between African-Americans and Caucasians.

Gary Moller Comments:
With the other half of my family being Polynesian, I feel I have a reasonably good insight into the healthcare practices of Polynesians, including the standard of health services provided. The standard of health care; especially following an episode of ill health could be much, much better and much more can be done to improve risk factors, principally diet, which trends away from healthy traditional foods to most unhealthy Western junk food.

However; an equally important factor and probably the most important reason why Maori, Pacific Islanders and Africans suffer substantial declines in health status across the board, when moving from their natural homelands to higher latitudes and large cities, is Vitamin D deficiency. While I need just 5 minutes of sunlight a day to keep healthy, my darker skinned relatives require from 10-50 times as much sunlight, depending on their complexion.

In some populations as many as 90% of urbanised dark skinned people are Vitamin D deficient and this greatly increases their susceptibility to all kinds of serious health problems including heart attack, heart failure, diabetes, stroke, internal cancers, depression and osteoporosis.

While studies, like the one referred to here are useful, I remain frustrated that the obvious and extemely well documented role of Vitamin D (Obtained mainly via sunlight) continues to be ignored by health experts who should know much better. Vitamin D levels are seldom, if ever measured, in cases of ill health, including stroke.

If any of your family or friends suffers a bad turn of health, including stroke, insist that his or her doctor orders a test of Vitamin D levels in their blood.

To be exact; what you are asking to be measured is their "25(OH) vitamin D". If those levels are found to be below 40 ng/ml, you must get those levels boosted immediately and the best way to do that is to recommend an extended holiday in a place like tropical Rarotongo or Samoa.

Keep smokers and fatties out of the country - Doctors

5:00AM Saturday June 30, 2007, By Catherine Masters

Potential immigrants should be screened for obesity and smoking habits because they place such a heavy burden on health services, respiratory specialists have suggested.
Doctors Jeff Garrett and Andy Veale from Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland say obesity is a huge and increasing problem in Counties Manukau but chronic health disorders are not funded adequately. Obesity leads to a range of problems, from diabetes and cancers to respiratory disease and sleep disorders, and severely stretches an already cash-strapped budget, they say.

Their comments follow the death of Samoan mother Folole Muliaga, who was obese. She died after her power was cut off and she could not use her breathing machine.Mrs Muliaga arrived in New Zealand in 2000 and was first treated at Middlemore in 2002. Dr Garrett says South Auckland has more obese patients than most areas. "We've got something like 40 patients who are very similar to her in terms of their needs."

Gary Moller comments
What is most revealing about the Muliaga case is the woeful inadequacy of modern "industrialised" medicine to deal with the chronic diseases of ageing and lifestyle; especially when there are cultural and language barriers to hurdle. In this case of morbid obesity, the "treatment" of this poor woman's obesity and consequent respiratory failure was to send her home with an oxygen machine. Sure, she might have had a few consultations with a nutritionist and maybe a few visits by a nurse at home; but these are hardly solutions.

As with the usual prescription of drugs to "manage" these lifestyle diseases, the adverse side effects are usually what finishes off the poor patient and not the disease. In this case, the adverse side effect of Mrs Muliaga's oxygen machine was skyrocketing power bills that the family could not keep up with. With the power company turning off the electricity to the home, that was the end of it for her.

Rather than whining about immigration and blaming the victims of their poor medical practices, these doctors who hail from the privileged quarters of society need to take a long hard look at how their own inadequacies as health professionals and consider how they actually contributed to this woman's death by prescribing a really dumb treatment. This trusting woman went to these docotors for help and she ended up dead. The sad truth is that the instruments that doctors have in their hi-tec tool box simply don't work for these kinds of health conditions.

Stereotyped attitudes about these lovely and trusting people also get in the way of providing effective health care.

As the article above says, Middlemore Hospital has about 40 other people with similar health problems. Let's get some proper health care for them.
