Infographic: Raw versus Pasteurised Milk

In support of the raw milk community and the education of dairy consumers, Natural News has just released an infographic about organic raw (fresh) milk versus conventional (pasteurized) milk.

This is an important issue because NZ authorities are attempting, right now, to shut down consumer access to raw milk.

This infographic, viewable below, reveals the crucial differences between the nutritional properties, animal compassion and health implications of raw (living) milk versus pasteurized (dead) milk.

Please bear in mind that this infographic has been produced for the United States Market

Here in New Zealand I would hope that things are far better overall when it comes to animal welfare and the use of chemicals (Incidentally, I funded my way through university by milking cows and making hay and I can vouch for the loving way the vast majority of NZ farmers care for their herds).

Our family has been drinking raw ORGANIC milk for several years and we have had nothing but good health during that time.  However; authorities in New Zealand, as with elsewhere, are doing their best to shut down its sale. And it looks like they are going to succeed which is ludicrous.

Just how many people in New Zealand have gotten ill or died as a consequence of drinking raw milk?I believe the answer is "Zilch!

Children Who Often Drink Full-fat Milk Weigh Less, Swedish Research Finds

ScienceDaily (Nov. 4, 2009) — "Eight-year-old children who drink full-fat milk every day have a lower BMI than those who seldom drink milk. This is not the case for children who often drink medium-fat or low-fat milk. This is one conclusion of a thesis presented at the Sahlgrenska Academy.

The study showed that children who drink full-fat milk every day weigh on average just over 4 kg less."

Gary comments:
Our family has been drinking full cream raw milk for the last couple of years. My body fat has decreased from about 17% to 12%, My partner, Alofa, is 18% fat which is remarkable for a 44yr old Samoan woman and our child, Alama, is all lean muscle and nothing else.

Despite this increase in fat in our diet, my cholesterol levels have dropped a little. This is the first drop in over 20 years of monitoring my cholesterol levels.

At the same time, there has been a substantial improvement in my cardiovascular performance as a runner and a cyclist.

Of course, we have done many practical measures to improve our family's health in addition to switching to raw milk.

Our personal experience is that that raw full cream milk leaves one far more satisfied for longer, meaning we probably eat a little less overall. The raw milk is a complete food that is rich in many of the nutrients that are absent or lacking in the modern diet, such as the fat soluble vitamins - including vitamin D.

We get our raw milk direct from a farmer under the arrangement of a "Cow Share" agreement by which we pay the farmer to look after our cow which produces milk for our consumption. If you do not have access to this kind of resource, then the next best thing is to purchase only the silver top milk from your supermarket.

Feed your children real NZ butter and shun the maragrines, including the ones that come with heart health claims.

Raw cows milk update - is it really healthy?

For two years, our family has been using almost exclusively raw cows milk that we obtain from a cow that we have shares in. Where raw milk has not been available, we have sought out Farmhouse Full Cream unhomogenised milk from the supermarket. Here is an update.

Why raw milk?
  • Raw milk from herd tested New Zealand farmers is as safe to consume as the pasteurised kind.
  • The raw milk we have is predominantly A2 protein which has little or no association with diseases such as IBS, diabetes and heart disease.
  • Raw milk is essentially self digesting - homogenised is not.
  • Raw milk has several hundred beneficial nutrients. Pasteurised milk has less than 120 left.
  • Milk other than full cream has most of the nutrients removed (What is removed is refined into many super foods and nutraceuticals and sold to consumers at a premium).
  • The farmer gets a much better payout per liter of milk while the consumer gets it for a little less than the nutrient poor supermarket versions.
How is our family health after two years of raw milk?

What can I say: perfect health!
  • My cholesterol profile has improved and my body fat has gone down to 12%. Physical performance in running and cycling has improved despite being 55yrs.
  • My skin has improved.
  • My 9yr old son is thin, muscular and in perfect health and has been free of any debilitating flus and colds.
  • My partner, Alofa, (now mid 40's) is now 15% body fat, strong and muscular (Average Samoan woman her age is estimated to be ~50% body fat).
  • Our 2nd daughter in her early 20's who is presently living with us is also well under 20% fat and very fit and strong.
While it is just not the raw milk, it sure has done no harm and potentially done a heap of good.
