How stress can end up depressing your sex hormones (updated 2/12/15)

One of the unwanted side effects of chronic stress, including constant athletic over-training and competition, is impotence, loss of sex drive and few sperm, most of which are not good swimmers.  I'm not an expert on the matter but I will do my best to explain the basics of what is going on and what to do about it.

Cholesterol: It is increasingly evident that the emperor has no clothes

If you have a history of cardiovascular disease in your family, or if you are on medication for cholesterol then you must read this.

Here's an excellent article about cholesterol by Dr. Mercola"

"For the past half century, cholesterol has been touted as a grave health hazard, and dietary fat and cholesterol have been portrayed as being among the “deadliest” foods you could possibly eat.

This may finally change, as limitations for cholesterol will likely be removed from the 2015 edition of Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It’s about time really, as 60 years’ worth of research has utterly failed to demonstrate a correlation between high cholesterol and heart disease.

Not only does undamaged natural cholesterol not cause heart disease, it is actually one of the most important molecules in your body; indispensable for the building of cells and for producing stress and sex hormones, as well as vitamin D.

Cholesterol is also important for brain health, and helps with the formation of your memories. Low levels of HDL cholesterol have been linked to memory loss and Alzheimer's disease, and may also increase your risk of depression, stroke, violent behavior, and even suicide."

How to determine your cardiovascular risk

If you live in the USA and want to be independently tested for cholesterol and other measures of heart health, you are welcome to contact me because I can arrange this for you, explain the results and help work out an intervention that is best for YOU.  If you live elsewhere, then you will have to consult your doctor.

More evidence that statins are neither effective, nor safe for preventing heart disease

    This is sensational news!

How statistical deception created the appearance that statins are safe and effective in primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease
David M Diamond1–3 and Uffe Ravnskov

    • We have provided a critical assessment of research on the reduction of cholesterol levels by statin treatment to reduce cardiovascular disease.
    •  Our opinion is that although statins are effective at reducing cholesterol levels, they have failed to substantially improve cardiovascular outcomes
    • We have described the deceptive approach statin advocates have deployed to create the appearance that cholesterol reduction results in an impressive reduction in cardiovascular disease outcomes through their use of a statistical tool called relative risk reduction (RRR), a method which amplifies the trivial beneficial effects of statins
    • We have also described how the directors of the clinical trials have succeeded in minimizing the significance of the numerous adverse effects of statin treatment.

    Gary:
Never before have I seen a published research paper that so clearly accuses fellow doctors and researchers of deception, manipulating statistics and minimising risk in order to present a distorted and harmful version of the truth.  This is sensational news and how they ever got to publish their findings in an international scientific publication is beyond me.  Maybe the tide is turning?  About time, I say.

Statin Drugs do not improve health -

    Statin drugs cause harm!

What this means is the Heart Foundation will have to throw out all their manuals ands completely rewrite their healthy heart guidelines.  Their lucrative Heart Tick is worthless.  Their advice about saturated fats such as avocado and coconut oil, let alone animal fats and eggs lacks credibility.

Total cholesterol levels between 4-6nmol/L are healthy and of no cardiovascular risk consequence.
Here are the official guidelines.  These guidelines are set by committees of experts, the majority of whom have financial ties with the statin industry.  I recommend you ignore anything below 6nmol (240mg/dl).

As cholesterol levels go progressively lower than 3nmol/L have increasingly poor health, more infections, cancers, confusion and dementia and lower life expectancy.
    Level mg/dLLevel mmol/LInterpretation
< 200< 5.2Desirable level corresponding to lower risk for heart disease
    200–2405.2–6.2Borderline high risk
    > 240> 6.2High risk

In my opinion, which is increasingly being supported by reports such as this, is there are no health benefits from taking statins by anybody, other than possibly those at the extreme end of cardiovascular risk.

Even for those at the extreme of high cholesterol, greater health benefits are to be obtained from identifying and dealing with the root causes of heart disease, principally inflammation and the deposition of calcium into the soft tissues including the blood vessels.  Statins do not address either of these.

I wonder why this has not had any mention in the mainstream news?  Maybe its another one of those lies that is too big to fail?

Exciting news about tocotrienols, inflammatory diseases cardiovascular health

     2011;17(21):2147-54.

    Tocotrienols and cardiovascular health.

    Abstract

This review emphasizes the effects of tocotrienols on the risk factors for atherosclerosis, plaque instability and thrombogenesis, and compares these effects with tocopherol. Tocotrienols reduce serum lipids and raise serum HDL-C. Alpha-tocopherol, on the other hand, has no effect on serum lipids. Tocotrienols have greater antioxidant activity than tocopherols. Both reduce the serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and advanced glycation end products, and expression of cell adhesion molecules. The CRP-lowering effects of tocotrienols are greater than tocopherol. Tocotrienols reduce inflammatory mediators, δ-tocotrienol being more potent, followed by γ- and α-tocotrienol. Tocotrienols are antithrombotic and suppress the expression of matrix metalloproteinases. They suppress, regress and slow the progression of atherosclerosis, while tocopherol only suppresses, and has no effect on regression and slowing of progression of atherosclerosis. Tocotrienol reduces risk factors for destabilization of atherosclerotic plaques. There are no firm data to suggest that tocotrienols are effective in reducing the risk of cardiac events in established ischemic heart disease. Alpha-tocopherol is effective in primary prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD), but has no conclusive evidence that it has beneficial effects in patients with established ischemic heart disease. Tocotrienols are effective in reducing ischemia-reperfusion cardiac injury in experimental animals and has the potential to be used in patients undergoing angioplasty, stent implantation and aorto-coronary bypass surgery. In conclusion, experimental data suggest that tocotrienols have a potential for cardiovascular health, but long-term randomized clinical trials are needed to establish their efficacy in primary and secondary prevention of CAD.

    Gary:
    My interpretation is as follows:

CRP, as a measure of inflammation, is arguably a better predictor of cardiovascular risk than cholesterol.  You will note that tocotrienols also reduce glycation which is exciting news for diabetics.  Glycation is also one of the best indicators of the decrement in cellular health associated with ageing.

Tocotrienols may be beneficial for other inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and, I suspect, diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

Tocotrienols reduce the risk of blood clots such as seen in cases of deep vein thrombosis and reduce and may even reverse the formation of artherosclrotic plague that can lead to heart attack, stroke, poor eyesight and dementia.

Tocotrienols may reduce ischemia-perfusion cardiac injury - better known as angina and the damage it may cause to heart muscle.

They may be a safe alternative to drugs like aspirin and warfarin.

Tocotrienols are more effective for the above as compared to vitamin E.

As per usual, no researcher is ever going to finish their conclusions without recommending more research.  Got to keep the funding coming in to keep employed.  That's fine - we need much more research about nutrition alternatives to expensive and harmful pharmaceutical drugs; but that does not mean we sit on our hands and wait and wait and wait....

Incidentally, I am not aware of any side effects from taking these other than looking good and feeling great!

    Conclusion:

If you are one of the 80% of the population who are at risk of suffering cardiovascular-related ailments during your life time, it makes sense to include tocotrienols in your daily diet.

Please contact me if you are interested in learning more about tocotrienols and whether this may be beneficial for you.  If you have a health condition and on medication then you must arrange a consultation before making any changes or adding a supplement such as these:

Blood pressure - How low is too low?

During a national television programme to test the health of the nation some years ago, there was much lecturing and finger-wagging. At one point, the highly knowledgeable medical expert stated that even a blood pressure of 120/80 was too high and that a lower BP of 110/70 or less was desirable for least risk of cardiovascular disease. Although this view is now more or less official doctrine nowadays this still has to be challenged.

Are we producing a nation of the "worried well"? The simple fact of life is that the vast majority of us have BPs of about 120/80, so how can this be unhealthy? Well, it is not unhealthy, that's for sure. If BP is much less than 120/80 there is no doubt that your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke decline a little more; but at what cost?

I recall a very interesting study (no reference, sorry) in which the mental gymnastics of subjects was tested. Researchers discovered that the participants with the higher blood pressures out-performed the ones with the lower BPs! Now, if you are an over-trained athlete or a patient on blood pressure lowering medication, you will appreciate what I mean when I go on about "Brain Fog".

Low blood pressure means less blood to the brain and therefore poor mental function. In the over 65's, being on blood pressure medication is associated with an 8-fold increase in motor vehicle insurance claims! Fix one problem with a pill and cause a whole lot more further down the line. This is myopic medicine.

To get blood pressure consistently less than the optimum BP for daily functioning, it is necessary to either be unwell, or to be on blood pressure reducing medication. I am not aware of any research that proves that blood pressure drugs will extend life or improve quality of life for subjects with moderately raised BP (if you can call it that) - say, 130/85. The small reductions in cardiovascular risk are not worth the associated risks.

The better strategy for maintaining good cardiovascular health is not to get all worked up if BP is a few points over 120/80 - that will just push it higher. Relax! Work on your diet, exercise daily, take a few key supplements and get on with life with the knowledge that your brain is pumped and primed for a good day's work!

More about Reversing Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Quality of Life

Far from being anti-doctor, I am all for them - with some reservations about specific treatments, as you would gather when reading my articles.  Anyway, I went to see my Dr, a long time acquaintance who completed the same University of Otago sports medicine course I went through.  It was several years since I last saw him - That was for a gashed forearm following an "unplanned dismount" off my bicycle!

It was time for a cardiovascular health check to see how the blood tests, etc matched with my Hair Tissue Mineral Analyses and general good health.

Please read what follows in conjunction with this article about reversing cardiovascular disease.
I suggest that you read it first then come back to this one
(there is a link back to here at the end of the the article).

My doctor is very good at telling me where I am while not necessarily the best at telling me how I got there.  So, where am I right now health-wise?

I now have records of blood cholesterol, blood sugar, body composition and blood pressure stretching back as far as 25 years.

During those years up until 5 years ago:
    • Blood pressure gradually crept upwards to about 130/90 and sometimes higher despite an increasingly low salt diet.
    • Cholesterol trended to unhealthy ratios despite an increasingly low cholesterol diet.
    • Muscle declined and fatness increased to about 16-17%.
    • And, of course, my general well-being and athletic performance did a steady dive!
Over the last five years I have progressively resorted to:
    • Liberally salting my food with Himalayan Salt.
    • I am currently eating up to six eggs every day (We have a friend with free range chickens), I eat the fat on meat, use butter and drink full cream milk daily (All in relative moderation and combined with physical activity).
    • I use dietary supplements daily as per the guidance from repeated Hair Tissue Mineral Analyses.
My latest medical tests as compared to 2002/3:
    • Body composition has body fat now at ~10% while muscle has increased by about 3kg.
    • Blood pressure in the Dr's surgery was 100/60 (A bit low in my opinion).
    • Blood sugar 5.0 (was 5.1)
    • Total Cholesterol is 5.8 (was 5.3)
    • Triglycerides 0.7 (was 0.9)
    • HDL Cholesterol 1.49 (was 1.07)
    • LDL Cholesterol 4.1 (was 3.9)
    • Chol/HDL ratio 4.0 (was 5.0)
Let me explain what these figures mean:

Blood sugar, insulin and body composition

As we get older, it is usual for insulin resistance to increase.  This may show as the blood sugar levels creeping upwards. What this means is we get poor at using fats and sugars.  Insulin resistance is regarded as one of the best measures of biological ageing as compared to chronological ageing.  This process of gradual decline shows as:
    • Increasingly fluctuating energy levels,
    • Reducing physical endurance,
    • Food cravings,
    • Gaining fat, no matter what, about the hips and waist,
    • Increasing difficulty getting rid of belly and hip fat and
    • Loss of muscle and loss of strength.
    • Insulin resistance may lead to Type II Diabetes.
In my case, this trend of biological ageing has been reversed:
    • Blood sugar is a steady 5.0 despite being older,
    • I have increased muscle without a single visit to the gym,
    • Body fat has dropped and is very low for age and gender and
    • The time I can go on a bike without the need for sustenance has stretched from 2.5 hours to a remarkable 4+ hours.
    • Muscle power has increased dramatically.
    Blood Pressure

As we get older, our arteries tend to become hardened, brittle and inflexible due to oxidative damage, calcium deposits and progressive clogging with fatty plaque.  These processes are present in at least 80% of the population, beginning from a very early age and will ultimately result in diseases such as:

    • Heart attack,
    • Stroke,
    • Impotence,
    • Diseases of dementia and
    • Arthritis.

This gradual process of declining circulatory health will show in the early stages as increasing blood pressure, decreasing maximum heart rate during extreme effort, decreasing physical performance, impotence, joint pain, cramping and brain fog.  The usual calculation for this if 220 beats per minute minus your age, so at 58 years, my maximum heart rate should be about 162.  The sooner the causes of this gradual decline are identified and corrected, the better your chances of success.

Here's the circulation facts for me:
    • Blood pressure is now120/80 or less,
    • Libido is at about where it was during my 20's,
    • Maximum heart rate is an impressive 180+ beats per minute and
    • I am riding "A" Grade in cyclocross racing which is just about as intense a cardiovascular sport you can get (There are "A", "B" and "C" Grades and the "A" is generously populated by some of the best in NZ).
    Cholesterol
    • Total cholesterol has increased.  This is healthy because cholesterols are the building blocks for cells and hormones.  Too little cholesterol and health fails terribly.  High cholesterol is healthy - so long as your body is turning it over fast and so long as the ratios between cholesterols are "healthy". Let me explain:
    • Triglyceride at 0.7 is very healthy and well below the threshold of 1.7.
    • HDL Cholesterol has increased to 1.49.  HDL is the protective form of Cholesterol and is now well above the threshold for healthy (>1)
    • LDL Cholesterol (the "unhealthy" one) has increased from 3.9 to 4.1; but this is offset by lower Triglycerides and higher HDL as follows:
    • The Cholesterol/HDL ratio (this is the important one) has improved from 5.0 to 4.0 (4.0 or lower is considered healthy).
According to my doctor, I am now in the bottom 5% of the population, for age and gender, for cardiovascular risk.

This is despite all of the extra salt, protein and fatty cholesterol that I have been eating over the last five years.  I will qualify this by saying that I have been generally very careful about choosing fresh, natural foods, home cooking, not over-indulging and exercising.

How did I get to where I am now?
    • Annual Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis.  This test has removed most of the guessing about what to eat and what supplements to take.  When repeated, it tells us where the action has been and what changes to make.  I could not have achieved what I have without this test.  (If you want my help with improving your health, you will probably need to get one of these tests completed and be prepared to repeat it annually).
    • Quality and targeted supplementation.  The key to supplementation is small amounts, often and for a long time.

Small amounts, often and for a long time

    • Going back to traditional foods and home cooking.  As a general rule of thumb: If it comes in a packet, has a long shelf life and needs minimal preparation, then leave it out - its not really food.  We seldom eat out and purchase raw food which is then prepared and cooked from scratch.  We grow vegetables and purchase from local farmers' markets.
    • Exercise is less than what I used to do and only as and when I feel like it.  I choose to ride a bike for now because it is gentle on joints (Depending on the dismounts!).
    • I am constantly seeking ways to reduce stress in my life.  This includes taking every opportunity to chill out on the balcony in natural light.  I now work from an office/clinic at home, employ nobody and we keep do not waste anything, including energy (Meaning we do not have to work long hours to pay for waste).  We take holidays at every opportunity with the theme of getting outdoors, into nature and exploring.
    • I expose my body to sunlight.  We are not meant to be cave dwellers. Sunlight is actually good for you.  My skin health has surprisingly improved since doing this and the sun is definitely invigorating and a wonderful antidepressant.

We are Creatures of the Light - Not of the Night

    In summary:

It is possible to reverse the processes of cardiovascular disease; but it takes time, a lot of patience, some money and scientific testing to guide you on your journey.

It is inevitable that our bodies will gradually fall into states of disrepair and eventually fail at which point our toes point upwards and we die.  For many people, this process of sad decline is well in hand by 30 years and gaining momentum.  Medically, the only hope is to last out the rest of life well preserved by an expensive concoction of toxic drugs!   But this is hardly my idea of  living and more like waving the white flag of surrender.

Death is more certain than being born and even more certain than paying taxes

It is a sobering fact that every person in human history eventually died.  This rather depressing inevitability does not mean that we should give up on trying to stay healthy as we age.  To the contrary, Life is throwing each and every one of us the challenge to see how long we can keep the wheels of our cellular machinery screwed on tight and well lubed.  Of course, this is one plan that is doomed to fail from the very beginning!  Before the beginning, in fact.

The Grand Plan is to die healthy - one morning to wake up  dead!

I, for one, am enjoying this, the most  vain of challenges.  You are welcome to tag along with me if you feel up to it!

Another example of how to reduce cholesterol without resorting to harmful drugs

" She reports that her cholesterol levels and ratios have markedly improved since the last checkup about a year ago. She attributes that to the supplements, plus minor dietary changes involving more salt and eating the fat along with the meat she already was eating. She has also dropped a few pounds which pleases her, too!"
    (Happy Hubby writing to Gary)

    Here are her cholesterol records:

    Reduction of Cholesterol without medication

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis for a 57 year old female.  Underlying factors for cholesterol abnormalities
    are apparent.

Readers will be aware of my opinion about cholesterol reducing drugs (statins): Harmful and mostly unnecessary.

People with elevated cholesterol are terrorised into taking these drugs, frequently suffering serious harm in the process.

There are healthy alternatives as demonstrated in this and previous cases that have been reported in this blog.  It is possible to have a diet that includes animal fats while actually achieving a healthy cholesterol profile.

Her hair analysis profile (above) indicated low adrenal and thyroid function, low iron, low manganese and issues to do with zinc metabolism.  Mercury is of a sufficient level to interfere with zinc, selenium and iron metabolism.  These may all be contributors to cholesterol abnormalities.

Measures were put in place to correct her nutritional imbalances, including some supplements and dietary changes which included adding back salt and fat into her diet and removing most refined carbohydrates and low fat milk, soy milk and so on.

The final ingredient was a large serving of "patience".

The results speak for themselves - cholesterol normalises.  No side effects other than looking good and feeling great!

An interesting side benefit has been the weight loss, strengthening my view that the "Obesity Epidemic" is being driven by the "99% Fat-Free" movement.  Both began at almost exact times - about 1980.  When we add fat and protein back into a person's diet, it is usual that they lose excess fat.

    Heart Disease CAN be Prevented!

An elderly relative who had coronary bypass surgery last year which left her worse off with an untreated collapsed lung, plus cognitive decline - and on more medication than ever.  Pointless surgery, if you ask me!  During a  follow up consultation with her cardiologist, the question of alternatives to drugs like statins, such as co-enzyme Q10 and omega 3 oils was raised.  The specialist rubbished the suggestion, saying there was no credible evidence that these had any more benefit than taking a sugar pill.  He also added that statins are highly effective and very safe. Of course, what he was saying was blatantly wrong to the point of being misleading:  Statins cause harm in the majority of users for little or no benefit; while nutrients such as Q10 are highly beneficial for heart health.

The following videos and the article linked below can save your life.  The first is a bit dry but informative and please bear in mind that the second video (inc Pt 2).  These videos outline what REALLY causes heart disease and the nutritional supplements that may work to reduce and even reverse heart disease.

One of my people, Lyse Beck, has exhaustively investigated the cholesterol and heart disease issue from a layperson's perspective to try to make some sense out of all the confusing information floating about.   Here is her article:

What does cholesterol, sunshine and fat have in common?

Big Business has gotten in the way of health.  Statins make billions but have done nothing to reduce heart attack.

Inflammation is the BIG driver behind heart disease - NOT cholesterol.

If you are looking for quality and affordable supplements to reduce inflammation and to nourish your heart, there are just two supplements to take daily:  Co-enzyme Q-10 with Omega 3 oil, plus Practitioner strength Enzogenol (Enzogenol is a powerful anti-inflammation anti-oxidant which you can get from me).  Of course, there may be other dietary supplements, depending on individual need; but these are a very good start.

I finish with a quotation from Lyse's article:

"The bottom line is there are many natural avenues that can be danced down to help reduce the risk of heart disease. Knowing what they are, and making choices for your self is, I think, the key thing. If you decide that statin drugs are for you, then cool. But know what you’re getting into, and know that there are alternatives. Do not let decisions regarding your health be in anyone’s hands other than your own. No one will care about your health as much as you will."

More evidence that Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs cause significant harm

"Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs significantly increase a person's risk of cataracts, muscle weakness, liver dysfunction and kidney failure, according to a study in the British Medical Journal." Medpage Today
    __________________________________________
    Gary:
While this study adds to the growing body of evidence that statins cause more harm than good, my view is that the harm being caused is still far greater than what is being reported.  Especially among those trying to remain active, as compared to the majority (Couch Potatoes).

Statins have a much more damaging effect on people who are active and I see this constantly probably because I am working mostly with active people; or - in cases of statin use - people who are struggling to remain active.  Liver and kidney damage from statin use need not be complete failure for it to wreak untold damage on one's health; even slight organ damage will show as fatigue and a steady deterioration of health that may never be linked to statin use.

New insights into link between anti-cholesterol statin drugs and depression

Lovastatin, a statin drug drawn in bkchem and ...Image via Wikipedia
Scientists are reporting a possible explanation for the symptoms of anxiety and depression that occur in some patients taking the popular statin family of anti-cholesterol drugs, and reported by some individuals on low-cholesterol diets. These symptoms could result from long-term, low levels of cholesterol in the brain, the report suggests. It appears in ACS' weekly journal Biochemistry.

Statins no benefit for low risk patients

"While there may be no overall lifesaving effect of statins, one wonders what other health effects they might have. Statins can have some troublesome adverse effects, some which are fatal.

Muscle weakening and muscle pain are among the best-known side effects of the statins. A national health survey in the United States found that people who took statins were 50-per-cent more likely to have back or leg pain.

Statin manufacturers state in their product labels that statins pose rare but real risks for rhabdomyolysis (the medical term for severe muscle breakdown that can result in kidney failure). Elevated liver enzymes -a sign of liver injury -develop in about one in 100 statin users.

Other unpleasant side effects include sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, depression, confusion, short-term or "working" memory loss and transient global amnesia.

The medical journal The Lancet recently reviewed several major statin studies and found that the drugs increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, on average, by nine per cent."

Here are my latest cholesterol readings: So what do they mean?

    "Hi Gary,

I went to the doctor today and got a print out of my last cholesterol readings.

    Total cholesterol: 6.7 mmol/l
    HDL cholesterol: 3.3 mmol/l
    LDL cholesterol: 2.9 mmol/l
    Triglyceride: 1.0 mmol/l
    Total/HDL ratio: 2.0

This was done Aug 09 and I was on my medication at the time.

The good news is I have persuaded my doctor to let me stop taking my cholesterol medication for the next 3 months and then I will do another test."

Low in just about everything and plenty of drivers for unhealthy cholesterol!

    Causes of Statin Adverse Effects

"After years of studying this subject I now have research documentation for the hundreds of case reports of unusual behavioral manifestations associated with statin use. There are now compelling explanations for the many reports of aggressiveness, hostility, sensitivity, paranoia, homicidal ideation, road rage like reactions, profound depression, suicidal ideation and even suicides associated with the use of statin drugs. And there is no doubt in my mind that many more statin associated problems may be involved with this dolichol function as we gain more knowledge."

Statins are one of the most widely prescribed class of drugs for the reduction of cholesterol.  I have written several articles about the adverse effects of these drugs.  I consider them to be dangerous and best not taken. There are safe and effective alternatives.

Here is an article that explains the disturbing litany of adverse effects of statins.  This was sent to me some time ago by M J Hope Cawdrey, a respected and widely published researcher (I am not quite sure how to describe him other than as a "Bioclimatologist").  His additions and comments are in blue.

Thanks, Mike, for allowing me to reproduce your contribution to this most important health issue.

The relationship between low back pain and an unhealthy cholesterol profile

From the Moller  files of the "Not so Useless Bits of Information".

    Cholesterol
There is huge focus nowadays on keeping cholesterol low and getting rid of the "Bad" cholesterol.  Treatment focuses on interfering with cholesterol production by way of a statin drug and through dietary restrictions using margarines dressed up as "heart healthy" and prescribing low fat. high carbohydrate diets.  While these measures may slightly reduce heart attack risk, the patient generally ends up much unhealthier overall, while the companies who make the drugs and the special foods make millions of dollars in profits, as do the doctors who prescribe them.

These measures do not work because they do not deal with the real underlying biochemical causes of an unhealthy cholesterol profile.

Children Who Often Drink Full-fat Milk Weigh Less, Swedish Research Finds

ScienceDaily (Nov. 4, 2009) — "Eight-year-old children who drink full-fat milk every day have a lower BMI than those who seldom drink milk. This is not the case for children who often drink medium-fat or low-fat milk. This is one conclusion of a thesis presented at the Sahlgrenska Academy.

The study showed that children who drink full-fat milk every day weigh on average just over 4 kg less."

    Gary comments:
Our family has been drinking full cream raw milk for the last couple of years. My body fat has decreased from about 17% to 12%, My partner, Alofa, is 18% fat which is remarkable for a 44yr old Samoan woman and our child, Alama, is all lean muscle and nothing else.

Despite this increase in fat in our diet, my cholesterol levels have dropped a little. This is the first drop in over 20 years of monitoring my cholesterol levels.

At the same time, there has been a substantial improvement in my cardiovascular performance as a runner and a cyclist.

Of course, we have done many practical measures to improve our family's health in addition to switching to raw milk.

Our personal experience is that that raw full cream milk leaves one far more satisfied for longer, meaning we probably eat a little less overall. The raw milk is a complete food that is rich in many of the nutrients that are absent or lacking in the modern diet, such as the fat soluble vitamins - including vitamin D.

We get our raw milk direct from a farmer under the arrangement of a "Cow Share" agreement by which we pay the farmer to look after our cow which produces milk for our consumption. If you do not have access to this kind of resource, then the next best thing is to purchase only the silver top milk from your supermarket.

Feed your children real NZ butter and shun the maragrines, including the ones that come with heart health claims.

How Lowering your Cholesterol Destroys your Health

Prior to turning 50 I actively worked to reduce my cholesterol levels by reducing my animal fat intake and generally following a modern "Heart Healthy" diet as promoted by medical authorities including the Heart Foundation.

In hindsight, this was a bad move: My cholesterol levels continued to rise, I started having to get up in the middle of the night to pee, my running became laboured and painful and I was increasingly depressed about my work! I suffered cold hands and feet even in summer. Most disturbing of all; I was getting skin cancers all over the place.

The last couple of years have seen a dramatic reversal of this pathetic and disturbing decline which I depressingly assumed was signaling the onset of old age! I switched back to animal fats, including full fat dairy, eggs and meat. For the last year or so we have been drinking raw full fat milk (predominantly Type A-2).

The last four years has seen a steady and delightful improvement in my health. My cholesterol levels have dropped a little for the first time in 20 years.

Astonishing! My skin cancers have all disappeared, I no longer get up to pee in the middle of the night. I am running and cycling as fast and as long as I did 20 years ago. Oh - and libido is cranking along on all 8 cylinders!

For a good rundown about the biochemistry of cholesterol and its role in the body for the production of hormones like estrogen and testosterone and also how to combat inflammation, please click on the presentation in the upper left of this article. You may need to pause the presentation in places to read the slides properly.

I do not advocate a high fat, high meat diet

When reading these slides, please bear in mind that I am not advocating a high meat diet like the Atkins Diet or anything near that. while we eat a wide variety of meat, fish, eggs and dairy these are not in excess by any measures. Our family diet is rich in vegetables nuts, berries and fruit. Grains tend to be whole and little sugar is consumed other than that found in juices and honey.

The most important point to take from this presentation is the importance of adequate cholesterol for health, including the production of hormones that drive the body's processes.

In my opinion a total cholesterol level of between 4-5.5 4 mmol/L is just fine. Higher or lower and health may be at risk. If your levels are creeping up despite a low cholesterol diet, the reason may be partly due to lack of sunshine on your body! UVB radiation convert cholesterol into cholecalciferol. And cholecalciferol (vitamin d) combines with LDL cholesterol to form steroidal hormones. Gun this process up and cholesterol is put to good use!
