EECP ExtraCorporeal External Counter-Pulsation

This service is available in New Zealand but it can work out to be quite expensive at around $150 or so per session and you need many sessions.

Having said this:  If it works then it is worth every cent spent!

Reversing Heart Disease
How to Avoiding Cardiac Bypass and Stenting with a non-invasive procedure your doctor won't tell you about.
Stimulating Collateral Vessels with EECP
I first learned of EECP from a talk given by Julian Whitaker MD at one of the large national medical meetings about seven years ago. (see video below).  The concept is remarkably simple, and yet incredibly effective.  Blood pressure cuffs are inflated over the lower extremities in phase with an EKG trigger during cardiac relaxation (diastole).
This pumps extra blood retrograde into the coronary arteries, which over time, stimulates collateral blood vessel formation.
In patients with clogged or occluded arteries, these new collateral vessels bring a fresh blood supply to the ischemic , "at risk" myocardium.
EECP is a drug free, non-invasive procedure that restores collateral blood flow to the heart of patients with occlusive coronary artery disease.  A successful EECP treatment program means that patients no longer require the expensive hospital based procedures to open the coronary arteries,  such as cardiac bypass, coronary artery stenting or angioplasty.  Needless to say, mainstream cardiology is not too happy about the lost income.

The Most Effective Therapy for Reversing Plaque
James Roberts MD is a cardiologist, lecturer and author who has written extensively on his experience using a nutritional supplement which is capable of reversing heart disease.

The name is Essential Phospholipids with EDTA. The two products he mentions are DeToxMax and LipoPhos EDTA .

Below quoted from Dr. James Roberts from his web site :

Phosphatidylcholine Therapy (PC) - is the most effective therapy in the anti-atherosclerotic armamentarium. The PC molecule improves cell membrane function, increasing absorption of oxygen and nutrition at the cellular level.

PC Stimulates Reverse Cholesterol Transport
PC stimulates the HDL-associated enzymes of reverse cholesterol transport, promoting the removal of excess cholesterol from our cells, including the endothelial cells that line our arteries. PC has been shown to improve blood flow and reduce symptoms in humans with narrowed arteries, and to anatomically reverse atherosclerotic narrowings in animals and in humans.

Why a personal heart rate and blood pressure monitor can save lives

The modern digital automated blood pressure and heart rate monitor is very useful for people suffering heart or circulation conditions and might even be a life saving tool.
I recommend the Omron brand without hesitation.

Manage Your Heart with OmronWebstore.com!
Used regularly, these devices give an indication of what is "normal". It will also give an indication of whether heart medication is working or not, or causing harmful side-effects, like low blood pressure. This is extremely valuable information to convey to your Doctor at the next consultation.

It astonishes and dismays me that powerful heart medication is being dished out in ever more numerous prescriptions but without any means of accurate ongoing monitoring of their effect. Especially so when there are so many reliable and affordable devices now available for the patient to use at home and at work. "Take three of these pills daily and let's see how it goes" is sloppy advice to give a patient with a heart condition. There should be daily monitoring for the duration that the patient is on drugs and the technology is available to do this.
These easy to use machines can also help to determine whether that case of "feeling a little under the weather", "indigestion", or "flu" is just that, or something potentially much more sinister like a slow or silent heart attack, requiring the immediate attention of a physician.

These little machines come into their own in the case of an emergency when you really do think someone may be having a heart attack and while you are awaiting the arrival of the paramedics or doctor. You can check their heart rate and blood pressure and convey the results by phone so they will be more prepared when they arrive. It also takes the guesswork out of determining if one must commence cardio plumonary resuscitation (CPR).

Blood pressure - How low is too low?

During a national television programme to test the health of the nation some years ago, there was much lecturing and finger-wagging. At one point, the highly knowledgeable medical expert stated that even a blood pressure of 120/80 was too high and that a lower BP of 110/70 or less was desirable for least risk of cardiovascular disease. Although this view is now more or less official doctrine nowadays this still has to be challenged.

Are we producing a nation of the "worried well"? The simple fact of life is that the vast majority of us have BPs of about 120/80, so how can this be unhealthy? Well, it is not unhealthy, that's for sure. If BP is much less than 120/80 there is no doubt that your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke decline a little more; but at what cost?

I recall a very interesting study (no reference, sorry) in which the mental gymnastics of subjects was tested. Researchers discovered that the participants with the higher blood pressures out-performed the ones with the lower BPs! Now, if you are an over-trained athlete or a patient on blood pressure lowering medication, you will appreciate what I mean when I go on about "Brain Fog".

Low blood pressure means less blood to the brain and therefore poor mental function. In the over 65's, being on blood pressure medication is associated with an 8-fold increase in motor vehicle insurance claims! Fix one problem with a pill and cause a whole lot more further down the line. This is myopic medicine.

To get blood pressure consistently less than the optimum BP for daily functioning, it is necessary to either be unwell, or to be on blood pressure reducing medication. I am not aware of any research that proves that blood pressure drugs will extend life or improve quality of life for subjects with moderately raised BP (if you can call it that) - say, 130/85. The small reductions in cardiovascular risk are not worth the associated risks.

The better strategy for maintaining good cardiovascular health is not to get all worked up if BP is a few points over 120/80 - that will just push it higher. Relax! Work on your diet, exercise daily, take a few key supplements and get on with life with the knowledge that your brain is pumped and primed for a good day's work!

Gary:
The big toe is your "canary in the coal mine" and is your early warning that not all is well elsewhere in your body.

In this case, the medications being taken for several years must be highly suspect.  The Simvastatin and Oxybutynin are both known to cause joint pain, swelling.  While drugs must undergo rigorous safety trials before release, I am not aware of any requirements that there be similar testing of the safety of mixing these very same drugs.  Each drug comes with its own set of side effects and the potential complications when these are mixed can be mind boggling.  In my opinion, prescribing six different medications is hazardous to health.  I accept that there is a good reason for prescribing each of the above; but this is an example of one drug leading to another: Omeprazole is prescribed to offset the digestion upsets of an earlier medication, as is oxybutynin.  This kind of progressive prescribing, while justified by the prescriber, is a slippery slope downhill, leading to further health problems such as the sore toe.  Chopping the toe may give relief to the current pain; but does not deal with whatever may be going on inside.  What will be next?  The other big toe?  The ankle? Liver problems?  Kidney?  You need to go back to your doctor and discuss the possibility that your sore toe is being caused by one or more medications.  I really do think you need to stop the suspect drugs.  See what your doctor has to say.
Lead is present in many
 materials used by tradesmen.
Lead damages arteries,
bones and joints.

Please read these articles about statins.  You will gather that I do not have much time for this class of drugs.

Please read these articles about "sore toe" of which there are over 30.  Massage and manipulation of the sore toe is an option; but not before the cause of the pain and swelling is first identified and then rectified.  You could start taking some of the supplements recommended in these articles - supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin.  While you search for the underlying causes.

Tradesmen who work with solvents, chalk, paint and timber are exposed to many toxic substances, such as lead, cadmium and arsenic, that build up in the body, wreaking metabolic havoc over the decades.  Years after exposure to these toxins has ceased, they remain in the body, rusting away the insides.  These toxic elements may contribute to conditions like heart disease, arthritis and even Parkinsons to name a few.

Good health, including resolution of the toe pain, getting up at night for a pee and so on, is not found through drugs and surgery, although these may be necessary for short term relief and survival.  The key to good health for life comes from identifying all of the underlying biochemical drivers that are leading to a progressive breakdown in health.  This is done with a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis and then acting on the results and recommendations.

This article about arteriosclerosis is a good example of how good health is achieved by use of the Hair Analysis programme.  The Hair Tissue Analysis is not a substitute for medication that has already been prescribed; but it does help people chart a course to good health.  As health improves one of the wonderful benefits is being able to progressively reduce, or cease medications - but those are decisions to be made between you and your doctor!

The first action is to order a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis and then get going!

Heart Disease CAN be Prevented!

An elderly relative who had coronary bypass surgery last year which left her worse off with an untreated collapsed lung, plus cognitive decline - and on more medication than ever.  Pointless surgery, if you ask me!  During a  follow up consultation with her cardiologist, the question of alternatives to drugs like statins, such as co-enzyme Q10 and omega 3 oils was raised.  The specialist rubbished the suggestion, saying there was no credible evidence that these had any more benefit than taking a sugar pill.  He also added that statins are highly effective and very safe. Of course, what he was saying was blatantly wrong to the point of being misleading:  Statins cause harm in the majority of users for little or no benefit; while nutrients such as Q10 are highly beneficial for heart health.

The following videos and the article linked below can save your life.  The first is a bit dry but informative and please bear in mind that the second video (inc Pt 2).  These videos outline what REALLY causes heart disease and the nutritional supplements that may work to reduce and even reverse heart disease.

One of my people, Lyse Beck, has exhaustively investigated the cholesterol and heart disease issue from a layperson's perspective to try to make some sense out of all the confusing information floating about.   Here is her article:

What does cholesterol, sunshine and fat have in common?

Big Business has gotten in the way of health.  Statins make billions but have done nothing to reduce heart attack.

Inflammation is the BIG driver behind heart disease - NOT cholesterol.

If you are looking for quality and affordable supplements to reduce inflammation and to nourish your heart, there are just two supplements to take daily:  Co-enzyme Q-10 with Omega 3 oil, plus Practitioner strength Enzogenol (Enzogenol is a powerful anti-inflammation anti-oxidant which you can get from me).  Of course, there may be other dietary supplements, depending on individual need; but these are a very good start.

I finish with a quotation from Lyse's article:

"The bottom line is there are many natural avenues that can be danced down to help reduce the risk of heart disease. Knowing what they are, and making choices for your self is, I think, the key thing. If you decide that statin drugs are for you, then cool. But know what you’re getting into, and know that there are alternatives. Do not let decisions regarding your health be in anyone’s hands other than your own. No one will care about your health as much as you will."

Statins no benefit for low risk patients

"While there may be no overall lifesaving effect of statins, one wonders what other health effects they might have. Statins can have some troublesome adverse effects, some which are fatal.

Muscle weakening and muscle pain are among the best-known side effects of the statins. A national health survey in the United States found that people who took statins were 50-per-cent more likely to have back or leg pain.

Statin manufacturers state in their product labels that statins pose rare but real risks for rhabdomyolysis (the medical term for severe muscle breakdown that can result in kidney failure). Elevated liver enzymes -a sign of liver injury -develop in about one in 100 statin users.

Other unpleasant side effects include sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, depression, confusion, short-term or "working" memory loss and transient global amnesia.

The medical journal The Lancet recently reviewed several major statin studies and found that the drugs increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, on average, by nine per cent."

Free statins with your burger and fries - Recommendation by medical researchers

"Fast food outlets could provide statin drugs free of charge so that customers can neutralise the heart disease dangers of fatty food, researchers at Imperial College London suggest."

"Statins have among the best safety profiles of any medication. A very small proportion of regular statin users experience significant side effects, with problems in the liver and kidneys reported in between 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 10,000 people."
Imperial College London News Release

When I first read this report I thought it had to be a joke.  But no, these people are dead serious.  But far from improving health, these "health professionals" are recommending a course of action that would be an unprecedented health catastrophe.

Statins are associated with numerous disastrous side effects including loss of muscle, severe joint pain, brain damage, erectile dysfunction, kidney damage and heart failure.

Far from being one in 1,000 or 10,000, my own experience is for adverse events to be nearer one in 10 or one in five.  The sad fact is that less than 10% of drugs adverse reactions ever get formally reported.  Some argue that the real rate is nearer one percent or less.

If consumers really want to reduce heart attack risk, the best action is to stay at home and cook their family a healthy balanced meal from raw ingredients.  Instead of dishing out statins with their fries, a much better health gesture by the fast food outlets could be to hand out a voucher for free night class cooking lessons.

for more about the dangers of statins, here is the link to what I have written on about them.

People who recommend the indiscriminate drugging of entire populations need to be exposed for who they really are: Over-educated Drugs Pushers - not health professionals - no more and no less.

The Treatment was a Success; However the Patient Died!

Well, not quite; but if the treatment continues its current course, death may well be the outcome.

Here are the results of a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) of a woman in her 60's who suffered a heart attack a couple of years ago. (Click on an image to enlarge). After successful emergency care she was placed on the usual dugs combination of a statin, beta blocker and diuretics. Lifestyle advice was next to nothing and nothing has been done to date to identify the dietary and lifestyle factors that may be the underlying causes of her ill health.

This woman is now showing signs of cognitive decline, persistent joint and muscle pain, fatigue and vulnerability to infection. All of these symptoms can be the result of the damage being caused by her heart medication. But is there more going on? The HTMA results are revealing:

Nutritional Elements
This chart shows that her diet is lacking sufficient concentrations of most essential nutrients. This profile is typical of modern diets that tend to be high in a few nutrients like sodium (Na) and little of anything else. There is little truth in the advice one gets that one can get all the nutrients need by having a "balanced diet". Modern processed foods and even our vegetables are high in flavour and calories while lacking in jsut about everything else. When one scrutinises the end results of people on modern "healthy balanced diets" the results can be disturbing.

Is the Hospital slowly Poisoning their Workers?
This woman appears to be suffering boron poisoning. She works as a cleaner at the public hospital where harsh borax-based cleaners are used. Despite all the protective gear, it appears that she is accumulating far too much boron. While I have taken the matter up with the Cleaners' Union, they have shown no real interest and have failed to act in any way to clean things up. Deeply disappointing if you ask me.

Toxic Elements
While these are all within the "Reference" range, one can see the risks that come with eating large fish like tuna nowadays and from cooking in aluminium cookware. Tests for toxic metals can be misleading if there is not an understanding of how elements like mercury and lead interact within the body with other elements. While there may be little risk of direct damage to the body by traces of a toxic element, harm may still be done if other essential elements are in short supply.

Toxic Ratios
Even the smallest traces of a toxic element can have catastrohic effects. What we can see here is that the mercury has effectively rendered unavailable what little iron, selenium, zinc and sulphur she has in her body. She is being rendered anaemic, open to infection and has lost protection from oxidative damage that one normally has from trace elements like selenium.

When Tendencies becomes Reality
Sure, we can medicate this woman to suppress the symptoms (Atherosclerosis (cardiovascular disease) is really a symptom, rather than a disease. But this approach is doomed to fail as one can easily gather from reading the HTMA results. To properly deal with her ill health we must burrow deeper to identify and then correct the underlying causes.

In this case, we can see the fultility of medicating longterm with heart drugs. We must eliminate her exposure to boron, get her on a nutrient dense diet, pump in some supplements (Such as Coenzyme Q-10, iron and B12). The statins must be stopped no matter what since they are destroying her muscles and brain and the other drugs can be easily replaced with natural substances that do the same job, such as natural vitamin E, garlic oil and vitamin C.

Note: A reliable Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis can be obtained through me. Just send me your name and address to 15 Heaton Terrace or email to gary@garymoller.com and I will send you a Hair Sample Kit which you then send for analysis. The fee is presently $225 (NZ$). This fee includes 30 minutes consultation with me to review your results. Your HTMA report usally takes 3-4 weeks to be completed.

Polypill set to combat killer condition - Or will it slowly kill thousands more people?

"Trials of the polypill will start in NZ after an Indian study offered convincing results.

Auckland University and New Zealand patients are trialling a pill which could prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths from heart disease, the biggest killer across the Western world.

The five-in-one polypill, which combines well-known medicines in lower doses, has been shown to be safe and effective in its first trials on humans. Researchers estimate that the single pill would reduce heart disease and risk of stroke by over 80 per cent in middle aged and older people. The medication contains a combination of aspirin, three drugs that lower blood pressure and a statin, the drug that lowers levels of cholesterol."
..."Researchers were desperate for trial participants aged between 50 and 70."

Gary responds:
In my daily work, I see chronic ill health that is drugs induced.  Clinical trials on poor Indians, funded by the drugs industry and publicised by compliant media do nothing to change my view that this Polypill is nothing other than a dangerous extension of plans to snare every human being into the pharmaceutical net.

The Polypill is a mix of dangerous drugs that have well documented adverse side effects.  While there may be a slight decrease in heart attack risk, this is far cancelled out by increased risks of many other ailments including cancer, septicemia, impotence and dementia.

If a clinical trial shows a 2% stroke rate in the medicated group as compared to 4% in the control group, the researchers will claim a halving of stroke risk.  Of course, this is a misleading claim; but one that mainstream media grabs onto with glee.

High blood pressure is usually the result of an imbalance in the body as is high cholesterol.  These drugs do nothing at all to address the underlying health issues that cause these ailments.  All they do is mask the symptoms (high blood pressure, cholesterol etc) while the disease process quietly percoloates away to the stage where it becomes next to untreatable.

If you are considering entering the New Zealand trial, why not consider the natural health"Poly" alternatives: Vitamin E, vitamin C, Lysine and fish oil mixed with a generous helping of fresh fruit and vegetables.  And a little refreshing exercise - outdoors, of course!

Good Cholesterol - Bad Cholesterol? Exposing the lies behind the expressions

We hear all the time about "good" and "bad" cholesterol.  These expressions are a load of rubbish, intended to demonise compounds that Humans can not live without.  It appears to me the lemming-like rush to dish out statins and to make huge profits is completely out of whack with the facts.

Fact:  Cholesterol is good for you.  Without cholesterol you will wither and die.  This is fact.  This is why a cholesterol free diet and cholesterol lowering medications are associated with declining health.

Fact: Statins do not increase life expectancy or improve quality of life.  To the contrary: Statins cause harm

Fact: Most of the cholesterol floating about your body is manufactured by your own body.

Question:  If cholesterol is so "bad" then how come the body makes so much of the stuff?

Fact: Hormomes, your cell structure and thousands of biological actions are dependent on a ready supply of cholesterol.  The sure way to reduce a randy man's libido is to mess with his cholesterol and, hence, testosterone.

Fact:  Cholesterol does not harm the body.  Oxidised cholesterol is what does the damage.

Good chlolesterol - Bad cholesterol: What's the real difference?

HDL (high density lipoprotein) is more stable than LDL (low density lipoprotein) and therefore more likely to oxidise and cause harm.  LDL is not "Bad".  LDL is merely less stable than HDL.  LDL is equally, if not more important for health than HDL since it is essential for production of the steroid hormones.

Both HDL and LDL are "Good" cholesterol.  There is no such thing as "Bad" cholesterol.
There is no place in medical science for emotive terms like "good" and "bad".  In this case, we should be using "stable" and "less stable".

How do you prevent cholesterol from oxidising (going rancid)?

Prevent oxidising by encouraging rapid turnover of the cholesterol in your body and creating conditions that reduce the rate of odidisation of fats:
  • Regular exercise
  • Lots of sunlight on your body (UVB radiation converts cholesterol into cholecalciferol which is in turn converted into steriodal hormomes like testosterone, adrenalin, thyroxine and oestrogen)
  • Have fat antioxidants circulating, including L-Carnitine, vitamin E and vitamin C
  • Eat a wide range of healthy fats while avoiding hydrogenated and homogenised fats and oils
Important

If you are diabetic or have elevated blood sugar levels:  It is the oxidative stress on fats in your body, including the cholesterols that causes much of the damage to your blood vessels and, hence, the cardiovascular and peripheral vascular diseases associated with raised blood sugar levels.

Medicated or not, supplement daily with the nutrients that are known to reduce the oxidative stress on fats.  This especially includes L-carnitine, as well as the others mentioned here.  For more about L-Carnitine and its importance for diabetics, please read this article here.

Do heart medications and cholesterol lowering medicines really improve your health?

Have been told by your doctor that you are at risk of heart disease?  Have you had a heart attack or stroke?  Have you been advised to go on cholesterol lowering statins and other heart medicines?  Before you go on these drugs, think twice.  If you are already on any of these medicines, you can still think twice.

I urge you to research your condition thoroughly.  Do not blindly assume that your doctor or cardiologist is really up with the latest in healthy heart management.  Do not assume that agencies like the Heart Foundation are looking after your best interests either.  Health is Big Business nowadays - a huge worldwide money-maker that thrives by having one hand in your pocket and the other firmly gripping your taxes.

The reality is that there is no benefit to "Health Inc" by you, the consumer, actually being healthy.  And, if you insist on being healthy, then they will do their best to have you worry about being well!

Health Inc: Advocacy organisations, hospitals, Government Departments, private and university research institutions, PHO medical clinics and drugs companies that participate in a multi billion dollar money scramble.  All supposedly working for your benefit.  More like an exercise in smoke and mirrors to keep fooling you, the hapeless consumer, into keeping on handing over your hard earned wages and taxes to them.  The major gains in public health have come through measures such as clean water, sewage, housing and education - Not from drugs based medicine, much of which is subject to challenge.

Take control of your health: If you want to live a long and healthy life, then you need to look after yourself, if you will excuse the double meaning.

Here are two websites about heart disease and other health issues that are a wealth of information for you the consumer:
The author of this blog is a consumer who spent 20 or so years on heart medication before he realised the truth about what these drugs were doing to him.  This blog is full of medical research  information about statins and other heart medications, along with his comments.  Well worth the read.
Move over to the Dach Side with this doctor who has seen the light.  I have nothing but praise for Dr Dach who does a terrific job at explaining the real mechanisms behind illnesses such as heart disease and he offers advcie about healthy interventions.

Please note:  I am most definitely not anti medicine.  I have nothing but praise for modern emergency medicine.  If I was run over by a bus tomorrow, modern emergency medicine may be my saviour.  The same can not be said of drugs based medicine when it comes to preventing and treating diseases associated with ageing, nutrition and lifestyle.

Here's a simple, inexpensive and effective way to prevent and reverse heart disease

"Diagnosing and treating heart disease with expensive tests and procedures such as coronary angiography, angioplasty, stenting and bypass operations is the most profitable part of hospital business. That's why hospitals compete and fight with each other over the rights to expand and build larger cardiac cath labs and cardiac bypass operation programs. These programs are huge money makers for the national hospital system.

What would happen if there was a cheap and effective way to reverse and prevent! heart disease, (ie. the Linus Pauling Protocol)? Heart disease would become an uncommon illness. With fewer heart patients to treat, the multi-million dollar cath labs and cardiac bypass programs at your local hospital would become obsolete and disappear. This would be a financial catastrophe for mainstream medicine."

Heart Medication Use Skyrockets in Young Adults as Disease Mongering Continues

by David Gutierrez
"The use of medications for heart disease-related conditions is growing far faster among young adults than among any other age group, according to a study by Medco Health Solutions, Inc., a for-profit company that operates a large mail order pharmacy.

The study looked at changes in medication use among various age groups between the years of 2001 and 2006. Medco's primary source of information was a sample database containing information on 2.5 million of the 60 million patients whose benefits the company manages.

Among those aged 20 to 44, use of cholesterol medications increased by 68 percent, from 2.5 million to 4.2 million. This increase was 37 percent higher than the increase in those aged 45 to 64, and 31 percent higher than the increase in those 65 and older.

Use of blood pressure medication increased by 21 percent among those aged 20 to 44, from 7 million to 8.5 million. This growth was 52 percent higher than the growth in the 45 to 64 age group, and more than 100 percent greater than the growth in those 65 and older.

"We were pretty surprised by the rapid increase in a short time frame in this age group," said Medco's chief medical officer, Robert Epstein.

Epstein attributed the growth, in part, to the "epidemic of overweight and obesity in this country," and people's increasing comfort with the concept of taking prescription medications.

"The 'good news' part of the story is that prevention is really important," Epstein said. "It's not bad that people get these problems controlled at a younger age because it will reduce the lifelong complications." But he emphasized that drugs are not enough, and that adjustments to lifestyle and diet are a critical part of improving cardiovascular health.

Medications for conditions related to heart disease are usually taken for life. This means that as people start taking the drugs sooner, the profits for pharmaceutical companies increase.

"It's another signal that we have an issue in this country that we have to get our arms around sooner rather than later, because we are destining these young people to lifelong therapy," Epstein said."

Gary Moller comments:
I have noticed the growing trend to medicate is steadily creeping into youth. All pharmaceutical drugs have side effects, some of which do not manifest for 10-30 years. This includes terrible diseases like dementia, liver cancer and crippling muscle damage. These medications include rampant dishing out of anti-depressants to young people. The earlier in life that one begins taking these toxic and often addictive substances, the greater the chances that terrible side-effects will afflict the poor person.

For the sake of profit and power, commercial interests are out to suck us all in and to suck us dry. Fear-mongering and brain-washing. Their hands firmly inserted into our pockets. The sad thing is we are letting it happen.

It is a natural condition of the teenage and twenty-something years that they be angst-filled as each youngster comes to terms with difficult issues such as finding a career, dealing with sexuality and partnership and letting go of Mother's apron strings. It does not help the young person get through this difficult time in life by blurring their view of the world with a toxic medicated brain fog. The best therapy for youthful angst is a clear head, coherence and the loving community support of family, elders and friends.

This is nuts when we are addressing health issues that are safely and best managed by diet and lifestyle and a few nutritional supplements.

Statins, for example, may cause impotence, proneness to infection and catastrophic muscle damage as well as a raft of other damaging side effects. These drugs should be reserved for only the worst cases of high cholesterol that do not respond to natural interventions. A few modest diet changes, kyolic garlic, omega3 oil, sunlight and exercise will usually do the trick for most cases.

All people on statins should be taking Coenzyme Q10 which helps maintain muscle health and function, including the heart.

Oh! I forgot to mention that cholesterol is actually very good for you in the right amounts. You die without it. Ask your doctor to explain why.

Myopathy known to occur with statins

"While the statins are effective in providing protection from coronary and cardiovascular events, they are known to cause myopathy (usually dose-related) and, rarely, rhabdomyolysis. A clinical diagnosis of myopathy is made when there is muscle pain or weakness accompanied by a creatine kinase (CK) level more than ten times the upper limit of normal. Rhabdomyolysis is a severe form of myopathy with muscle breakdown leading to myoglobinuria, which may result in renal failure and death.

The Centre for Adverse Reactions Monitoring (CARM) has received eight recent reports (including two fatalities) of rhabdomyolysis occurring in patients taking between 20mg and 80mg of a statin daily."

Gary Moller comments:
This medsafe NZ report raises a number of interesting issues:

Officially myopathy and rhabdomyolysis are "rare" with rates of from 0.03% to 1%. Such rates depend on not just the Dr detecting the condition; but reporting it in such a way that it is recorded in offical databases. In m y experience, this hardly ever happens and only in the most serious cases leading to severe disability or death - assuming the disability or death were directly attributed to the culprit medication.

Co-morbidities and other medications complicate the detective work. So, for example; while the patient might have died from heart failure, the medication might have damaged the heart muscle. Or, as a result of the severe muscle weakness caused by the statin, the patient might have slipped, broken a hip and subsequently died from the complications of a blood clot. The official cause of death would not be the statin.

If these medicines have such nasty side effects, it begs the question: "Why do these things continue to be prescribed?" Especially when there are such effective non-medical alternatives that have absolutely no side effects other than looking and feeling great.

"Because they reduce heart disease risk and because the side effects are very rare", you might say.

"Rare?" At a recent presentation to more than 50 "Oldies" I was cornered afterwards by two women who had been prescribed statins. Both had suffered severe muscular pain and weakness and one had visible severe muscle wasting of her thighs and was having trouble walking. I was horrified at the damage.

Assuming that about 10 of the total audience were on statins, is this occurence "RARE"?

Cholesterol - How low is too low?

Opinion:
I have written previously about the dangers of taking cholesterol lowering drugs. Each time I read up on this topic, it appears the bar for what is considered "high" cholesterol has been lowered yet again.

High was once 6.0
Then is was 5.5
Then it became 5.0
Then it dropoped to 4.5
And now it is 4.0 (Source NZ Heart Foundation)

A total of 4.0 being the threshold now means that almost the entire adult population is liable to medication to reduce their "high" cholesterol. This is ridiculous.

Cholesterol is the essence of cellular life. Without cholesterol, our cells can't survive. They become soggy and die. Cholesterol is essential for the formation and function of hormones. Without it we cease to function properly. Low levels cause depression, inferitlity and loss of sex drive etc, etc - the list is too long. We get sick and we die.

People who "suffer" high cholesterol have more energy, they are not depressed, they are sexually active, they have babies, they think better and they keep well. Once a person is medicated to reduce their "high" cholesterol, the ill health and rapid decline with age takes off. Hmmm! Their cholesterol problem gets blamed - "Thank goodness the Dr discovered my high cholesterol just in time and got me on medication, otherwise things would surely be much worse!"

The crux of the problem is that population health decisions are being made by myopic specialists who can not see beyond their narrow view of what consitutes human health. Sure, lowering cholesterol below 4.0 brings slightly more reductions in deaths by heart disease in large populations; but at what cost in other areas? Incidentally, it is not cholesterol per se that causes heart disease. We see a similar problem with dermatologists driving the policy to do with sunlight exposure and, in so doing, are causing a raft of more serious health problems than what they are setting out to prevent.

Meanwhile dementia rates soar as do accidents due to the mental fog caused by these misguided strategies to reduce heart disease by a smidgen.

The role of vitamin E on the anti-atherosclerotic effect of fish oil in diet-induced hypercholesterolemic rabbits

The role of vitamin E on the anti-atherosclerotic effect of fish oil in diet-induced hypercholesterolemic rabbits was studied in male New Zealand white rabbits.
..... These results suggest that vitamin E and/or fish oil attenuate atherosclerosis in high cholesterol-fed rabbits; vitamin E and fish oil potentiated the effect of each other. Furthermore, without sufficient vitamin E supplementation, rabbits treated with high cholesterol plus fish oil will show an elevation of plasma creatine kinase activity." _______________________________________________

Gary Moller comments:
Just how much research on male NZ rabbits applies to you is open to debate. My partner keeps telling me I'm like a rabbit, so I am taking it seriously!"

This New Zealand research adds to the growing body of evidence that diet and supplementation strategies have important effects on health risk, including cardiovascular disease.

As a matter of interest, Creatine Kinase (CK) is an enzyme that operates within cellular energy pathways. Elevated levels of CK in the blood may be an indication of muscle damage, such as may be caused during intense exercise, over-heating or heart attack (muscle is rich in CK so damage to muscles releases CK into the blood). Marathon runners have been known to be hospitalised in the days following a marathon because of extemely elevated CK levels, triggering fears that the runner is undergoing a heart attack! Of course this is not the case, but this is still very unsettling. But this is still confirmation of the damage a hard run does to the body and the need for additional anti-oxidant supplementation.

This study indicates that vitamin E and fish oil may be beneficial if you are undertaking intense exercise, bruising muscles, exercising in the heat, or if you have high cholesterol levels. Vitamin E is a powerful anti oxidant that helps the body neutralise the flood of free radicals that are produced from tissue breakdown before they can do damage to healthy, previously unaffected tissues. Fish oil has many health qualities, including anti-inflammatory qualities and stabilisation of heart electrical activity.

Rancid cholesterol and other fats in the blood stream act as free radicals. Vitamin E again reduces damage to the arterial walls due to its powerful anti-oxidant qualities.

Vitamin E with fish oil are at their most powerful in terms of protection when combined. The vitamin E also serves to prevent the fish oil from oxidising while it is circulating in the body. Fish oil can be purchased with added vitamin E, or if the cheaper fish oil only product is purchased, it is recommended that natural vitamin E be added to the diet. The same can be said for additional vitamin C. Read this article here.

Purchase quality natural vitamin E only. I have serious reservations about the efficacy of cheaper synthetic forms of vitamin E.
