Please help - I have suddenly been struck down with anxiety, depression and extreme fatigue - updated 10/02/15

"I am a 16 year old male suffering from adrenal fatigue.

About two months ago something happened. During a very long time i had been working out excessively in the gym and using a very high-caffeine drink before my workouts. I only rested one day a week and I usually spent that day studying or doing other activities.

I felt great untill that one week when suddenly my energy wasn't quite as high as usual. I ignored my tiredness and drank my high-caffeine drink and worked out anyway. Then i started noticing my confidence going down for no reason. By the end of that week i was tired and in a strange way i didn't have my usual confidence. I ignored these symptoms and worked out with my high- caffeine drink anyway. Then one day after my workout something happened. I came home and had a HUGE "down", i was suddenly depressed and was struck by anxiety AND I was so tired. I also felt weak in my knees, wrists and hands. Ever since that day it has not gone away. I sleep over ten hours yet I'm tired and fatigued when i wake up.

Now i am noticing other symptoms like blue/black under eyes, lines on my fingers and most of all i have lost the lust for life and being happy. (also sex drive for that matter). I also did the pipil test with the flashlight and my pupils seemed to struggle to keep attracting.
My doctor didn't see anything wrong when he saw the urinal- and blood test but i know there is something wrong with my body.

I am thinking about buying the Dr Wilson adrenal fatigue quarter pack. The only thing that i am unsure of is if there is any age restriction. I am only 16 but i really need to recover from this. My main concern is that this adrenal fatigue will mess my whole puberty and maturing process because the adrenals are responsible for 40% of the hormones or whatever...

Please help!"

Gary:

High caffeine pre-workout supplements are all the rage right now; however they are a deal with the devil, so to speak.  There is payback later in return for the immediate benefits.

Symptoms of excess caffeine use include:

Immediate
  • Fast and irregular heartbeat (palpitations).
  • Increased blood pressure.
  • Rambling speech and thoughts.
  • Jitters.
  • Nervousness and anxiety.
  • Headaches.
  • Tummy upset.
  • Insomnia.
  • Cardiac arrest (death).
Long term (if still alive!)
  • Addiction.
  • Stomach ulcers.
  • Depression.
  • Extreme tiredness, weakness of heart and muscles and extreme loss of stamina.
The risk of death is real:  at least two young men have died from cardiac arrest in New Zealand gyms in recent years, shortly after consuming pre-workout energy supplements.

Enough said about these pre-workout supplements, other than to say, "Don't take them!"

Let's get some help for this young man by answering his questions and giving some helpful advice.

Can he take Dr Wilson's Adrenal Fatigue supplements?

The answer is "Yes!" His signs and symptoms, including pupil test, are consistent with adrenal fatigue and there is no age for diet and nutrient interventions to aid recovery.  His story and description of symptoms point to his having exhausted and or damaged his adrenal glands, presumably from the combination of excessive use of stimulants combined with hard daily workouts and presumably an inadequate diet.

How the adrenals work

The adrenal glands manufacture almost 50 different hormones, including steroid hormones such as adrenalin, cortisol, aldosterone, estrogen and testosterone.  Adrenalin and cortisol are shot into the bloodstream during stress such as when working out.  These hormones quicken the pulse, increase blood pressure, mobilise fats and sugars, heighten the senses and generally prepare the body and mind for battle (very much like caffeine when you think about it).  Yes, caffeine stimulates the adrenals to release these hormones.  Here the problems begin!

The adrenals do not have an endless supply of cortisol and adrenalin: they continuously produce tiny amounts of these hormones which are carefully stored in readiness for the occasional stressful event.  If the adrenals are being constantly signalled to drop their loads due to excessive caffeine consumption, intense workouts and a fast life in general, then the adrenals can quickly be depleted and even begin to suffer damage.  Especially if combined with a nutrient-poor diet.

The end result can be CRASH and BURN big time, including cardiac failure because the adrenal hormones regulate blood pressure and heart function (think of the paramedic injecting adrenaline directly into the heart muscle when resuscitating a victim of cardiac arrest).

Dr Wilson's products are safe to take at any age.  If they contained hormones, I would not be saying this.  Dr Wilson's products are carefully formulated nutritional products derived from the best ingredients available.  There are no hormones in them at all: The ingredients provide the nutritional substrate that exhausted and damaged glands so desperately need to both repair and to manufacture more hormones as and when required.

There are many adrenal support supplements available nowadays and I have played round with many over the years.  However, each time i have gone full circle back to Dr Wilson's adrenal products.  His may be quite expensive but they are simply the best.

I have looked at the medical tests that this young man's doctor ordered and the doctor is correct when reviewing the test results to conclude that he could see nothing the matter.

For two reasons:
  1. The doctor ordered the wrong tests, if he was wanting to assess adrenal function.
  2. Doctors are no longer taught about how to recognise or treat adrenal fatigue.  Medicine will only recognise adrenal shutdown at its most extreme (Addison's) for which the treatment is powerful patent steroids.
(Adrenal fatigue has been written out of the medical textbooks since the late 1950's at about the time of the commercial launch of a steroid drug called Prednisone.  Previously, doctors were taught how to use glandular extracts for the treatment of adrenal exhaustion).

Here is what I recommend for this young man:

  • Commence a course of Dr Wilson's adrenal fatigue programme under the guidance of a trained health professional.  Refer here to find a practitioner.
  • Start with Dr Wilson's Adrenal Rebuilder, Super Adrenal Stress Formula and Adrenal C.
  • It may be necessary to consistently follow an adrenal fatigue recovery programme for as long as three months - sometimes longer - to be sure that one has recovered.  Young people generally recover faster than older people.
  • Avoid caffeine and other stimulants and get plenty of rest, including regular sleep.
  • Exercise, but only every second day.  The exercise may be invigorating while not being exhausting.
  • Ensure the diet is rich in all of the nutrients the body requires to manufacture lean tissue, hormones and neurotransmitters.  This means a wide range of fats and proteins from fresh animal, fish and plant sources.  Eggs are a good source of everything.  Eat bright and dark vegetables and berries for powerful protective antioxidants.
  • In addition to Dr Wilson's adrenal formulations, take a good quality multivitamin.
  • Protein is not stored like fat and sugar in the body.  If protein is not immediately available from digestion for tissue repair, hormone production and so on, then the protein will be taken from lean tissues, thus weakening the body.  To become stronger and healthier it is a good rule of thumb to have a little protein about every four waking hours.
  • If there has not been a significant improvement within about six weeks then it may be wise to investigate for additional possibilities that may contribute to chronic fatigue, such as glandular fever, which is very common in young men and women but difficult to diagnose until after the disease has run its course.

Does compression clothing really work? (updated)

Compression Calf Sleeve by McDavid

"What is your view on compression clothing (ie- skins), is there any scientific proof that they actually improve recovery and performance or is it just a great way to get people to spend waaaaay too much money on a pair of tights??"
______________________________________
Gary:
Unfortunately, it is the case with many good ideas, that the commercial imperative to make more and more profits, while things are "hot", ends up taking precedence over everything else, including actual proven benefits and even common-sense.  I think this is the case with compression clothing - a good idea that has some limited benefits and applications, which has been promoted way beyond any real benefits.

The limitations of compression clothing

When a muscle relaxes, it engorges with oxygen and nutrient-rich arterial blood which  nourishes the muscles.  When the muscle contracts, the now deoxygenated blood is forced via the veins back towards the heart.

Compression Pant by McDavidAt rest, all blood flow is driven by contractions of the heart.  As the muscles begin to contract, their action takes on more and more of the job of pumping blood back to the heart.  When exercising at maximum aerobic capacity, as much as half of all your circulation through the exercising muscles is being driven by the muscle pump effect.  When there is perfect balance between the heart and the muscles, this is when the athlete is in the "zone".

If a person is suffering from adrenal exhaustion (About 80% of the general population have a degree of adrenal fatigue), then one of the unwanted symptoms is pooling of blood in the limbs due to blood vessel flaccidity. This appears as distended veins in the feet, calves, hands and arms when standing still, as well as sometimes feeling light-headed when standing up and even suffering heart palpitations.  Varicose veins may be the consequence of excessive ongoing pooling.

It is possible that a person with flaccid blood vessels may experience some benefits from wearing compression clothing because the compression clothing may counter the tendency of the blood vessels to distend.  This clothing may be beneficial for an exhausted athlete during long haul travel, reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis.  I recommend compression clothing, if a person has varicose veins.

Compression stockings may give temporary relief to conditions like shin splints by dampening the shock wave of foot impact as it travels up the leg.

However; compression clothing may be seen as being a short term measure for conditions like these by treating the symptoms and not the causes (Adrenal Fatigue, nutrient deficiencies, over-training, faulty biomechanics and so on).

If a healthy athlete with toned blood vessels was to wear compression clothing would there be a performance benefit during exercise?

I think not and there may even be a negative effect.  This is because the veins and muscles of the exercising person must be allowed to quickly and effortlessly fill with blood while momentarily relaxed, so the blood can then be expelled towards the heart during the next muscle contraction.  If there is even slight external pressure, such as from compression tights, then the volume of blood within the muscle body and veins may be less than if there was no external compression at all.  This may cause an overall reduction of blood flow and the heart may have to work harder to force blood into the muscles.

Let's think about this in Darwinian terms:  If tight skin conferred a survival benefit, such as more speed and endurance to catch prey or escape predation, then that creature would thrive.  Can you think of any animals with tight skin?  I can't.  It would appear the case is the opposite.  Skin that does not compress allows free movement of limbs and unimpeded circulation.

While there may appear to be a majority of research in favour of compression tights  this does not necessarily mean all that much because of the widespread practice of what's called "cherry-picking", which is the widespread practice of discarding research that does not support one's position while selecting those that are positive. Another dodgy practice is to simply over-interpreting the findings and extending the claims of benefit beyond the small group of subjects that might have received some benefit in the study.

Such is the pervasive influence of commercial funding of academia nowadays that we must be sceptical of what comes out as research; especially of research that appears to go against common-sense.  At least 70% of all scientific research never sees the light of day.  It is referred to as "filing cabinet studies".  Of the 30% that gets published, less than 10% gets into mainstream media, including sporting and fitness publications and websites - and these are the best of the few studies that are mostly favourable, given that sponsors of the research may be, or have links with, the makers of products and services that will benefit from favourable research findings.   Research beneficiaries may be heavy advertisers with sporting publications and sporting events, including making direct payments to athletes and prime influencers.  Directly and indirectly, commercial interests an unpleasant influence on editorial decisions about content.

The moment there is the exchange of money or goods, there is a conflict of interest and the loss of credibility of any claimed benefits by the recipients.

I have learned the hard way that, articles containing advice that conflicts with the products of advertisers will usually be rejected.  For example, advice to drink tap water during training in preference to sugary and acidic sports drinks, does not sit comfortably within a sports magazine that has full page advertising for a sports drink. It is even worse if I was to suggest how to make your own electrolyte drink for just a few cents.  Nor is it advisable to recommend that children run about the fields barefoot when the main advertiser is the magasine is a sports shoe company.  When was the last time you read an article in a sports magasine about the harm to health, including teeth and gums, caused by energy drinks?  There are lots of articles about the performance benefits.

In conclusion about compression clothing:

If it is a cold day, wear warm tights or trousers.  If you are doing a long haul flight, or road trip,  then compression tights might reduce risk of blood clots.  If you have varicose veins that hurt or swell excessively during exercise - yes - experiment with compression clothing.

If you appear to have flaccid veins and suffer from lightheadedness, you would be wise to invest some of your your money on an adrenal fatigue recovery programme, while undertaking a review of your exercise, nutrition and lifestyle practices.

As consumers we must be forever on our guard, lest we be suckered into parting with our precious money for things we don't really need.

If your spending choices are driven by fashion - go for it!

Rogue flu strain has surfaced in New Zealand

A rogue flu strain has surfaced in New Zealand, infecting even those who have had their annual vaccination.
Most flu sufferers this year have had the H1N1 influenza A strain, or swine flu, against which the latest vaccine offers good protection.
But about 8 per cent of cases have involved a new strain that had changed quite a lot, National Influenza Centre director Sue Huang said yesterday, and there had been a reported surge in immunised people catching flu.
The problem was caused by a different strain of the H3N2 influenza A virus surfacing unexpectedly this year, she said.
The flu vaccine had three components - two influenza A strains and one B strain - which were selected each year to match the strains predicted to strike the following winter.

_______________________
Gary:
Its wrong to call this a "rogue": This flu is merely doing what a flu virus does - it mutates often.  That's flu for you and this is why flu vaccines are of little value as an increasing number of studies are showing.
http://blog.garymoller.com/2013/04/is-seasonal-flu-vaccine-actually.html

What really annoys me about all this hype about flu is:

  • Research shows that the annual flu vaccine is mostly ineffective  http://blog.garymoller.com/2013/04/is-seasonal-flu-vaccine-actually.html
  • There is an almost religious "flat earth" fervour amongst medical and health officials to the extent that even the mere suggestion that a particular vaccine may not be effective is met with howls of protest.  Look at the facts please!
  • Immunity from a vaccine is temporary at best; whereas the immunity gained from contracting the actual disease is lifelong and gives some resistance against the next variant.  The more one contracts the flu, the less severe any further infections - I can attest to this personally as I have got older.
  • Because the flu virus is constantly mutating there is one defence that we must focus on and that is our immune system - our defence system that has evolved with the millions of pathogens that occupy our environment.  People who get really sick are the ones with compromised immune systems.  Where's the advice on how to ensure our immune defences are robust?

Why is there no publicity about how to bolster our immune defences?

The answer is simple: There is no commercial benefit and, in fact, such advice is bad for business.  Vaccines are worth millions of dollars to medical practices in New Zealand and worth even more millions to the all-powerful pharmaceutical industry.

How to bolster your family's immune defences

  • High dose vitamin C.
  • Echinacea and lysine.
  • Selenium.
  • Zinc.
  • Magnesium - in fact - all the alkalising nutritional minerals.
  • The B vitamins.
  • The fat soluble vitamins - A, D, E and K.
  • High antioxidant diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables and bright spices, especially turmeric.
  • A diet that is rich in fats and proteins.
  • Bone broths; especially chicken broth.
  • Avoid stress - get relaxation time every day. Do an adrenal fatigue recovery programme (your adrenals help regulate your immune system).  Contact me if you think you have adrenal fatigue.
  • Do not over or under exercise - exercise should be invigorating - not exhausting.
  • Promote habitual nose breathing, especially for children, asthmatics and anybody with lung or heart problems.  Mouth breathing is a sure risk for ear, nose and throat infections.  Mouth breathing further encourages the nasal tissues to swell and become infected - a vicious cycle of trouble!  Do a Buteyko breathing course: Contact the Buteyko guru - Glenn White here http://www.buteykobreathing.nz/
  • Do Buteyko if you are a habitual snorer (snoring dries out and irritates the mouth and throat tissues making you a sitting duck for infections! http://www.buteykobreathing.nz/Sleep-Apnea.html
  • Be aware that many prescription drugs can suppress or weaken your immune health, some deliberately.  Contact me if you have any concerns about current medication.
  • Expose yourself to infections such as colds and flus when you are in a healthy and rested condition - get the flu over and done with and you will be immune to that strain for life and resistant to any new variants.  At worst, a healthy person will be out of action for no longer than 10 days (take even more vitamin C etc and broths when you are ill).

Even if you decide to go with the vaccines for your family, the decision to do so in no way reduces the importance that you concentrate on supporting your immune health.  In fact, this may be more important because there is growing concern that most vaccines impart only partial and/or temporary immunity and may actually render the recipient more vulnerable to the target disease, requiring booster vaccines for life!  Take the whooping cough vaccine for example - referring to this interesting collection of Pubmed studies:

And read this:
"The recent news articles to hit the mainstream media in the past week finally states what public health officials and epidemiologists have known for some time: those vaccinated against pertussis are carrying and spreading the bacteria and are responsible for most of the outbreaks."

My position regarding vaccines

I am still of two minds: I think there are benefits to be gained from vaccines; however, I think we have lost all perspective with the money-making benefits completely taking over the whole issue of immune health and disease control and, at the expense of promoting basic good health, including stress management, good nutrition, non-patent treatments and even the importance of good housing and sanitation.

There is no way we can vaccinate against the millions of bugs out there which are always adapting to what we throw at them chemically (take antibiotic resistance for example).  Our only sure defence is our incredibly complex and effective immune system.  This should be our focus, rather than trying to take over using costly and only partially effective technology.

Getting sick is part and parcel with being human - how we respond to an infection, such as a virus is the big question: A healthy person will have a virus done and dusted within about 10 days and ultimately better off due to a primed and more robust immune system; whereas an unhealthy person will be smashed and further weakened by the same pathogen.

Take Ebola for example: We should be engrossed in studying the survivors and those who have the antibodies but never fell seriously ill.  How come they survived?  What protected them?  Nutrition and being generally in a good state of health is key, I would wager.

The jury is far from out regarding the safety and efficacy of vaccines.  In the meantime, my advice is to concentrate on nurturing your inner defences.

What on earth is "Neurocardiogenic Syncope"?

Cyclist emerges from coma - National - NZ Herald News
WWW.NZHERALD.CO.NZ
Triathlete Laurent Vidal has emerged from an induced coma and is showing signs of making a positive recovery from a heart attack suffered in training at the weekend.

"He was eventually diagnosed with neurocardiogenic syncope, a nerve problem that causes a sudden drop in blood pressure".

"Neurocardiogenic syncope" is a fancy way of saying he fainted as a result of a problem with the nerves that activate the heart.  This condition is remarkably similar to Addison's or Adrenal Fatigue which is epidemic among athletes.  In fact, this was the topic of my lecture tour of Australia last year, "Running on Empty".  Unfortunately, mainstream medicine still refuses to recognise any condition called "Adrenal Fatigue".  Their refusal to recognise this condition may be because it is successfully treated by nutrition and lifestyle modifications - not high value patent drugs and surgery.

"Neurocardiogenic syncope" is just a big word for describing what happened.  Nowhere in the Herald article is there anything about root causes, just symptoms.  Modern medicine treats symptoms - not root causes.  This is yet another example of failing to identify the root causes of ill health.

You can not drug a person into good health - drugs merely suppress symptoms

When one looks closely at the nutritional status of many athletes like marathon runners, cyclists and triathletes, a disturbing pattern appears:  MALNUTRITION!   Many of these athletes really are running on empty!   Some look like they are starving themselves to death and careful analysis of their diet and bodily nutrient stores (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) usually confirms this.  Have a close look at the photo above of Laurent Vidal and his fiancee Andrea:  He actually looks like an old man, despite being just 30.  Athletes can be very, very fit while also being very unwell.

Being in a state of nutrient starvation may be complicated by a triathlete or swimmer being exposed daily to large amounts of toxic halides such as chlorine, fluorine and bromine in swimming and spa pools.  These halides, in the presence of low iodine, directly interfere with thyroid function which then impacts on adrenal function.  The adrenals regulate the excitement of the nervous system, blood pressure and heart function.  The adrenals drive high-octane sports performance as well.

When the adrenals fail to respond to stress, due to overuse and depletion of nutrients (adrenal fatigue), the athlete will collapse - faint and maybe even die.  Sounds like "neurocardiogenic syncope", if you ask me!

Serving suggestions for Dr Wilson's Adrenal Power Powder

"Adrenal POWER Powder™ is designed to provide a quick, healthy pick-me-up and solid adrenal support for busy people experiencing stress and/or adrenal fatigue. Just add this nutritious powder to any beverage for a powerhouse energiser that delivers comprehensive support to the adrenal glands."
Dr James Wilson

Use Adrenal Power Powder any time during the day when stress may be getting the better of you, such as a stressful meeting, hard exercise, or when energy levels are predictably dropping during the day (typically around morning and afternoon tea times).  It is fine to have 2-3 servings per day, especially if you are struggling with energy or stress - or both (who isn't!).

Suggestions for Serving:

  • 1/2 to one scoop per serving (large glass).
  • Fill the glass one 1/3 of water before adding the powder.
  • I like to add one rounded teaspoon of Super Smoothie mix (http://www.garymoller.com/Products.aspx?categoryid=52).
  • If you have been prescribed iodine by your health practitioner, add the prescribed amount.
  • Add a little coconut cream to taste (coconut cream comes with many health benefits, including helping the thyroid gland do its job well).
  • Mix thoroughly into a slurry.
  • Add more water.  I prefer to add some dull cream, non-homogenised milk (silver top in the shops).
  • Guzzle with passion!

When you are stressed but too busy to slow down, your adrenal glands can become overworked, leaving you tired and feeling like you are running on empty. If you are experiencing adrenal fatigue you may also undergo periods of low energy at certain times of the day that can interfere with your ability to get things done. Providing quick-acting targeted support to your adrenal glands at these times can help promote balanced energy and sustain healthy function. Adrenal POWER Powder™ is expertly formulated to provide a boost of energy as it delivers a broad range of key ingredients that nourish and support the adrenal and other glands affected by stress. This energising formula can be used alone to help maintain steady energy but is not a substitute for the products in Dr. Wilson’s Program for Adrenal Fatigue & Stress. It works with them to optimally deliver the special support needed by people on the go who are experiencing stress, tiredness and/or adrenal fatigue.
Adrenal POWER Powder™ is a unique formula containing natural flavors and fibers combined with select ingredients from the four core products in Dr. Wilson’s Adrenal Fatigue program. These ingredients include hormone-free, concentrated glandular extracts to provide important natural building blocks for the adrenal and related endocrine glands involved in the stress response; pH balanced vitamin C with bioflavonoids to meet the increased need for vitamin C during stress; specific key nutrients the adrenal glands need for healthy function and energy production; and extracts of organically grown plants that have been shown to optimally support proper function of the organs and glands most depleted by stress. The ingredients are carefully chosen and combined in precise proportions to best facilitate building and maintaining healthy adrenal tissue and function, while also supporting the other endocrine glands affected by stress. Every nutrient in this formula is delivered in its optimal form and proportion to provide steady energy and decrease the effects of stress.
