Cell Phone radiation and health - some practical measures to protect you and your family

If you thought your cell phone is safe, I suggest you think again: The evidence is growing that cell phones may be harmful to your health.

Read on....

The above image, showing excessive vascularisation in the left bread of this woman, is from an article I wrote here:

Can you see where this lady kept her cellphone?

The first image shows the vascular changes in the area where she kept her phone tucked into her bra.  Not good!

The second image is of one of my clients with painful fibrocystic breast disease affecting her left breast.  Incidentally, you will note that this "hot spot" would probably be missed by a mammogram, if she had one.  The third image is of her breast a year later, showing the wonderful benefits of the interventions we used with her.

Regardless of age and family history; if you are concerned about the health of your breasts, the first action is to arrange to have a breast thermogram.  A thermogram, unlike mammograms, is completely non-invasive and carries absolutely no risk of radiation induced cancer.  Thermograms are sophisticated infrared imaging of the breasts.  Unlike mammograms, the thermogram is your first tool for detecting inflammation in the breast, your precursor to breast cancer.

Have you ever wondered what comes before the cancer?
In most cases, its inflammation!

NB: Gary Moller has no financial links with the thermogram screening service

Glioma and other cancers three times more likely with 15 hours cell phone use per month

Questions continue to arise about cell phones and their contribution to certain cancers. Even the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has raised some concern about extensive cell phone use. The NCI explains that cell phones emit radio frequency energy in the form of non-ionizing radiation. In other words, a cell phone basically lets off radio waves which are absorbed by the nearest tissues of the body. If a person carries a phone in their pocket all day long, energy can be absorbed into the person's side and midsection.

How does this energy affect the cells over time?

Does this constant exposure disrupt cellular processes, especially when held up to the brain?

While the NCI says that a cell phone's non-ionizing radiation has not been proven for carcinogenic activity, other studies may prove otherwise.

More than 15 hours of cell phone use per month may triple brain cancer risk

French scientists are now reporting on a new cohort study showing how extensive cell phone use can increase one's risk of brain cancer. The study, included in the newest issue of the British journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, found that brain cancer risks tripled in individuals who use their phones for more than 15 hours per month.

Gary:
Microwaves are high frequency sound waves that can penetrate flesh.  This radiation produces a warming effect which you will feel if when you are holding a cell or cordless phone against the side of your head.  It is not the gentle warming that is the problem, its the violent shaking of the contents of millions of cells that does the damage.

Go on - rattle your ovary and brain cells!

The warming you feel to the side of the skull comes from heat generated by molecular friction from the violent vibrations caused by the microwaves.  Most cells can survive this violent shaking but not when a cell is in the process of actively dividing: mitosis.

Mitosis is the process, in the cell cycle, by which a cell duplicates into two genetically identical daughter cells. In mitosis, chromosomes in the cell nucleus are separated into two identical sets of chromosomes, each in its own nucleus.

If, as the chromosomes are unzipping and then reforming to form the two daughter cells, the cell is violently shaken by a penetrating microwave, it is possible that the cell's chromosomes are permanently damaged, leading to cell dysfunction and even cancer.  Rapidly dividing tissue such as found in an unborn child, bone marrow and developing sperm in the testis would be particularly vulnerable to any form of radiation, including microwaves.

As an aside, I am uncomfortable with the widespread use of ultrasound scans to examine the unborn child, supposedly for medical purposes; but more often to determine the sex of the baby and to impress the expecting mother and father with a photo for the album.  I am of the view that, unless there is a compelling medical reason for the scan, then it is best avoided completely.  It is interesting to note that the baby often squirms during the ultrasound scan as if trying to get away.  This is understandable because, just like a tiny dog, the foetus is capable of hearing the high-pitch scream of an ultrasound.

Female eggs, found in the ovaries, are presented with a different problem: they are irreplaceable and the older the woman, the older and more tired her eggs will be.  If we subject the eggs to assault from agents like harmful chemicals and radiation, they may be damaged, causing conception problems and health issues for the baby, including birth defects and cancer.  Zapping a woman's ovaries with cell phone radiation is not a good idea.

When carried on one's body, such as in the hip pocket, this radiation may penetrate the testicals of the male and the ovaries of the female and other sensitive tissues.  This radiation is constant, even when the phone is on standby, although much more intense when in use.

I tell my children not to sleep with their phones turned on and near their bodies and definitely not under the pillow.

When I use a cordless or cell phone, I either use a headset, or have the phone set to speakerphone, so I can hold the phone away from my body.

I usually carry my phone in a small man bag so that it is a little further away from my body than if it was in my pocket while walking or sitting.

The evidence grows that extended cell and cordless phone use does cause brain cancer

"Studies carried out in Sweden indicate that those who begin using either cordless or mobile phones regularly before age 20 have greater than a fourfold increased risk of ipsilateral glioma."

My advice before you read the article below:
  • Don't believe everything the authorities and industry experts tell you: There is no safe lower limit for both non-ionising or ionising radiation (cell and cordless phones are non-ionising radiation microwave emitters).
  • Use the microphone on your cell and cordless phone and hold the phone away from your body when it is in use, or
  • Use a plugged in head phone (not a Blue Tooth receiver which emits radiation) when using your cell or cordless phone.
  • Carry your cell phone in a bag rather than on your body and turn it completely off at every opportunity.
  • Discourage your children from carrying their phones near their groins (Which means it is adjacent to delicate reproductive organs, eggs and sperm - not good!).
  • Discourage your children from sleeping with their phone turned on under their pillow, or elsewhere next to their bodies (A child's - and adult's - cells are rapidly dividing during sleep which makes them most vulnerable to gene damage).
  • Airport full body scanners (not the metal detectors) emit either ionising or non-ionising radiation that is concentrated in the top few mm of flesh - definitely not safe!). Request a friendly pat-down.
Does Extended Use of Cell Phones Cause Brain Cancer?
Two recent studies provide fuel for both camps: They both find the association between brain cancer and cell phone use is dubious. Does this mean they found no associations? Hardly.
The debate about whether cell phones cause brain tumors continues as two new studies appear to illustrate that brain cancers do not rise as a result to increased cell phone use – at least until the data is looked at more closely.
In the first of the two – from the University of Oxford's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) – followed 791,710 middle aged-women for seven years – after they reported their cell phone use in 1999, 2005 and 2009.
The research discovered 51,680 invasive cancers and 1,261 central nervous system cancers during the period.

Hiking or Mountain Biking? Your cell phone could save your life - Updated

"If you own a cell phone, bring it on every hike. Before you leave, give your phone number and service provider to your check-in contact. Plus, don’t think that a cell phone or GPS is a substitute for a good map and accurate compass. Keep your phone turned off during the hike, but power it up occasionally to check for service (and to drop some digital breadcrumbs). If you become dangerously lost or injured, dial 911 even if you don’t have strong service. For better service, head for higher ground—cell phones operate by line-of-sight radio waves. And finally, just be careful out there."

With more and more mountain bikers going into more and more isolated terrain and track like the Heaphy opening up for cycling (During the winter!), we can expect more people to be getting into trouble in the Great Outdoors.  This article is an interesting explanation about how technology is ahead of how we think cell phones work in "non-service" regions.

In New Zealand, don't dial 911 - dial 111.
Full article here explaining why your phone may save you even when there is no service.

And guess what?  The same day this advice is posted, we get this reported about a mountain biker who had, unbelievably, been attempting a Southern Crossing of the Tararuas:

"On Wednesday, the missing man made contact with us via cellphone. He was in a distressed and hypothermic state, uncertain of his exact location. Due to extremely bad weather conditions, rescuers were unable to be flown to where they suspected the man might be, instead being dropped off in a riverbed some hours away."

Study links cell phone use with malignant brain cancer

It's NOW or NEVER - time to make a clearcut choice for your brain and your children's brains

A major study presented by Dr. Lennart Hardell of Örebro University in Sweden, stated that people using cell phones doubled their risk of developing brain cancer and acoustic neuromas, a tumor that damages the hearing nerve.

The study also showed that people who started using cell phones before the age of 20 years old were more than five times as likely to develop brain cancer.

Advice from Gary for your children:
  • Do not carry your phone in your hip pocket - testicals and ovaries are directly subjected to constant EMF. The dangers longterm for fertility and offspring are hardly in the realm of rocket science!
  • Do not sleep with your phone under your pillow - turn it off or place it well away from the bed.
  • When talking on the phone use a hands free device, or speaker phone and keep the phone well away from you.
  • Turn it off !
