Some handy tips for getting rid of "Fungus Feet"

Did you know that a group of researchers recently isolated over 200 varieties of fungus from between the toes of a healthy subject?

For millions of years we have coexisted with bugs like fungi, yeast, bacteria and viruses, all coexisting as healthy, natural flora on and in our bodies: In fact, we have more of these on and in our bodies than we have cells of our own - amazing!

Yeast and fungi are associated with decay.  In our case, it is the job of these creatures to break down dead and dying organic matter to its base minerals, thus returning us to the soil where we can again be recycled within the cycle of life.  When we are striving for good health, we want these bugs to be on the outside of our cells - not inside, as is the case with fungus infections of the feet.  Unpleasant fungal infections are a sign that all is not well within.

Fungal infections of the feet and toenails are very common, affecting mostly teenage boys and elderly people.  Then there are sub-groups such as swimmers, women on contraceptives and men who work with their hands (and presumably: They wear heavy boots).

Typically the nails become deformed thickened and yellowed and crumbly on trimming.  The skin between the toes may become extremely itchy with wet lesions between them that can be painful.

Topical and oral Anti-fungal medicines may give some relief; but seldom will they give lasting relief.  This is because these drugs do not deal with the underlying causes: Weak body defenses.  The key to keeping fungal infections on the outside lies in keeping the body's immune system in tip-top shape.

Your body has many defense mechanisms, collectively known as your immune system.  A strong immune system requires a rich and balanced supply of nutrients, principally minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, proteins and various carbohydrates.  The body also needs to be free of toxins such as pesticides, preservatives, heavy metals and many pharmaceutical medicines, including steroids (such as for asthma) and contraceptives.

When boys go through their puberty growth spurt, their need for minerals for bone growth is huge.  Minerals such as zinc and selenium have powerful antifungal and antiviral properties.  As is the case with facial eczema, a fungal infection of sheep, any farmer will tell you that prevention begins with zinc and selenium.

Swimmers are exposed to large amounts of chlorine and fluorine which blocks iodine in the body.  Iodine is a powerful antifungal which is already typically very low in New Zealanders.  Combined with the wet environment, it is hardly a surprise that toe fungus is a real problem for swimmers.

A man who works with his hands: High levels of lead inside his body
Men who work with their hands wear sweaty boots which is the perfect breeding ground for foot fungus.  What is less well appreciated is these men also typically work with brominated and arsenic treated timbers and other toxins such as lead.  These have a blocking effect on the antifungal elements of zinc, selenium and iodine in the body, thus making these men sitting ducks for fungal and other skin disorders, including eczema, psoriasis and even actinic kerastosis.

When a woman goes on an oestrogen contraceptive her copper levels soar.  It just so happens that copper is a direct antagonist of zinc in the body; hence the high incidence of fungal and yeast infections in women who are on a contraceptive.  Copper is often the active ingredient in an IUD implant.

Think of a huge tree that is dying: It has fungus within.  Fungus is highly associated with the dead and dying - Its the last thing we want to see in the elderly.

Most people do not die of old age -

they die from the consequences of malnutrition

Not a good way to enter old age: Severely depleted!

Yeast and fungal infections can be controlled by applying apple cider vinegar to the skin with a sponge or face cloth, towards the end of showering and then quickly rinsing off the residue.  Zinc, selenium, iodine and vitamin C supplements can be taken daily to increase the internal supply of these essential nutrients.  Take your time: Natural therapies take time to work their magic.

If the infection is widespread or particularly persistent, please consult and experienced natural health practitioner such as a naturopath.

Hi Gary

We wanted to quickly ask your advice - our son (18months) gets excema, and I have recently experimented by taking him off milk and replacing it with a kids soy milk. His excema has calmed down but has not gone completely however it seems less severe.
Is it safe to give the kids just soy - or do they need the nutrients in cows milk? I'd love to hear your thoughts,
Thanks so much

Gary:
I am not a fan of soy milk.  While fermented soy products have nutritional merits, I am not that sure of the nutritional benefits of soy milk which appears to an over-processed product that is devoid of nutrients.  Soy milk is just one of many, many industrially processed food items that are replacing healthy wholefoods that once dominated our supermarket shelves.

Milk is better nutritionally; but not much more, if overly processed.  The process of pasteurisation is said to reduce the number of nutrients in milk from over 900 down to about 120.   Homogenisation whereby the fat molecules are broken up so it disperses evenly is hotly debated as to possible consequences to health.

An unhealthy association

When fat is removed from milk so are many of the remaining nutrients, including the fat soluble vitamins - A, D, E and K.  What remains is a little protein, calcium and lactose (sugar) and not much of anything else.  I would not feed fat reduced milk to anybody, especially a child because all you are doing is ingesting excess calcium and giving a short sugar hit.  Excess calcium, with little in the way of other vitamins and minerals, especially the fat soluble ones and magnesium, will be contributing factors in cases of eczema.

A low fat, low nutrient diet for a child is a sure guarantee for poor concentration at school, difficulty sleeping, constant illness and obesity.  The food industry has done a remarkably effective job tricking us into believing that these foods are actually healthy and are best for producing strong and intelligent children who will go on to be champion athletes and great scholars.  This is simply not true.

An unhealthy association
The food industry is using the very same tactics that were refined to perfection by the tobacco industry decades ago to dupe people into believing that cigarettes are healthy for you, when they knew all along that tobacco is deadly harmful.  The tactic is to recruit health experts and sporting heroes to lie through their teeth the exact opposite of what is really the truth (Of course, many athletes and health experts couldn't care less so long as the money is good and many others are so brainwashed or too ignorant, so they actually believe what they are saying!).

It must be right because 20,679 Physicians say so - Yeah right!

Iron Man Food - Yeah right!

My youngest, Alama, has been raised on raw full cream milk which we get direct from a farmer.  He is healthy, fit and strong. Thin, while muscular.  Raw milk has been good for him as it has been for the rest of the family, including myself (cholesterol levels have become healthy since switching to raw full cream milk, btw).  Please refer to this article about my own remarkable improvement in health.

If you can not access raw milk, the next best thing is Silvertop Milk.  The most available silvertop milk in New Zealand is the Farmhouse brand silvertop milk.

Eczema and asthma (The same condition; but with different manifestations) were serious issues for my children and it took several years to figure these out and to find non-drugs solutions that worked.  Both children who were affected with asthma and eczema are now 95% clear and living life to the full without limitations or drugs.  Having said this, there are no "one size fits all" solutions.  Contact me for a consultation if you would like my assistance with finding healthy solutions that works for your child.

Poor Circulation to Legs - Natural Therapies continue to work their magic

"Hi Gary
I hope you had a great Christmas with the family.

I thought I would show you these great pictures compared to June of  those legs.  There is a big difference."

The first two photos are of "F's" legs which were in dire trouble earlier this year.  Medical interventions were failing to stem the deteriorating
condition of his legs.  We began a programme based on nutrition and self massage.  The last two photos were taken late December 2008.

The results speak for themselves.

My son has eczema - Please help!

Hi Gary,
I have a son who is 3 years old. He has very bad eczema and I have heard of a lady whos son also had bad eczema and found the allergen through hair analysis.
We have tried a Naturopath and homeopathics, and numerous other natural things and also been to a Medlab and had medical tests done to find the cause.
Nothing has worked.
Do you think that analysing a hair sample of his will concluded what the problem really is???
If you think that a child with eczema is a good candidate for this, I would really appreciate a reply.

Gary Moller replies:
While I do make a lot of use of the HTMA test, I do not think it will be of much help for your son.
However; eczema and other childhood allergies is a topic I have spent many years wrestling with because eczema and asthma have been rampant in my family. While the conditions continue to percolate away below the surface, I can tell you that we have got both pretty much licked. Here is what we did:
  • First of all, we had the children skin tested for allergens and discovered high reactivity to animal dander and dust mite - and pollens to a lesser degree
  • We then had the house tested and found high levels of dust mite in the carpets and no shortage of animal dander.
Here is what we did:
  • We ripped out all of the old carpet and eventually replaced with new carpet
  • We gave away the cat
  • We fitted allergen covers to the mattresses and pillow cases
  • We fitted an attic ventilation system to reduce dampness and pollen in the house
  • We scrubbed, vacuumed and dusted the house (It took months to get rid of all of the cat fur)
These measures brought about near immediate improvements in the health of the children.
We never noticed any improvements from medications like steroid creams and various other potions including antihistamines. Asthma medication worked but has now been dispensed with completely.
What has really worked for their long-term health has been the use of omega 3 oils taken internally and applied externally to affected skin. Here is the regime:
  • Omega3 Smartbites twice daily and/or a teaspoon or so of Waihi Bush Flax magic
  • Apply Waihi Bush Flax Original to the skin as a moisturiser. Wash the affected skin daily with soap and then apply the oil to the skin at least twice daily. Flax oil seems to have remarkable benefits for skin.
  • You could add 500 to 1,000mg of vitamin C to the diet which is great for collagen and healing
  • Eliminate refined foods like white bread, flour, crackers, noodles and most breakfast cereals. Soft drinks, sweets and anything with refined sugars, preservatives and colourings are out. No margarine or other processed oils. Use butter and whole milk. You can do much more with regards to diet; but this is a good start.
The biggest challenge with children; especially as they get older, is to get them to be consistent with these dietary measures.
Purchase some Epsom Salts and bathe your child daily in a solution of one cup to a warm bath. The magnesium and sulphur is highly beneficial for the skin, leaving it silky smooth and it aids healing and collagen strength.
