Help needed for poor circulation to legs - Red necrosis (updated 26/01/15)

Before intervention
Hi Gary,

I was browsing through your website and saw your article on leg circulation:

I have the exact same ailment which seems to be getting progressively worse. I take 13.5mg of warfarin per day due to multiple blood clots, which has in effect cause much of the problems in my legs. I suppose, my venous issues are compounded with varicose veins which have increasingly developed due to incompetent valves.

Before intervention
I have seen many GPs who are seemingly baffled at how to manage my condition. The prescription so far has been compression stockings which I have learned actually cut off the circulation and cellular respiration in the legs causing ulcers to remain open indefinitely. I have since banished the stockings and applied zinc oxide regularly which has healed up the ulcers. Now I am left with the red necrosis like the gentleman in the above link, which is slowly creeping up my legs.

If I could get the condition that gentleman's legs healed to it would be heaven!

Gary:

A few years have passed and I can report that the gentleman who owns the legs in this photo is now well into his 70's and his legs are better than ever.  He is a regular walker and in good health.
After intervention

When he first came to see me, he was in distress and I was shocked at the state his legs were in.  My, how things have changed!

Let's be real about this condition: It is indicative of seriously poor circulation to the legs and this may be a precursor to eventual lower leg amputation.  To beat it, we can not afford to mess about.

The nutrition interventions I may recommend depend upon each individual's special circumstances and must also be mindful of what medications they may be on.  For example: Vitamin E may augment the anti clotting effects of Warfarin, so the obvious action is to reduce the amount of Warfarin if we decide to give you vitamin E (This may need the cooperation of your Dr).

The big breakthrough, of late, is iodine deficiency which we can now test for.

After intervention
By far the best first action is to obtain a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) and possibly a Thyrodine test (contact me by phone to discuss).  I am not keen on giving you a "One Size - Fits All" list of advice for a serious health issue.  We must get it right.

For example: You may be lacking zinc but you may actually have too much; you may need more vitamin C but then again it may be copper you need more of.  You may have far too much calcium in your soft tissues and not enough magnesium.  Do you need more fat and protein?  Who knows?  The only way we can know for sure is through the HTMA.

So, the first step you will need about a gram of natural undyed hair that you send to Pacific Health.  The process of analysis takes 3-4 weeks from the date you send in the hair sample.  Once you have your copy of the report you need to contact me to arrange a time to go through the report together.  If you do not live in Wellington, New Zealand, then we can do this either over the phone or with Skype (I prefer Skype).

Oh! - It might be worth taking several photos of your legs so that you have something to refer to in a year or so from now.  Improvements can be very subtle and easily missed.  Photos do the job well and can be matched with other measures such as distanced walked with comfort.

My nutrition recommendations for a long and healthy life, free of disease

Drawn by the brilliant Mr Colin Livingstone
I thought I'd share a morsel of what I am learning about nutrition and health, including two pieces of compulsory reading to ensure a long and healthy life that is free of disease, including cancer, dementia, heart problems, fatigue, infections and so on and so on.

If you like what you learn please pass this onto your loved ones and get them to act on it, thanks.

Compulsory Reading:

The Iodine Crisis: What You Don't Know About Iodine Can Wreck Your Life
By Lynne Farrow

and

The Mammogram Myth: The Independent Investigation Of Mammography The Medical Profession Doesn't Want You To Know About
By Rolf Hefti

The message in this book applies to all and not just to do with women and mammograms.  It is relevant to the message in the iodine book.

If you read just one, it must be the iodine e-book which I recommend you read carefully and then please put into action her recommendations.

I now have in stock full strength Lugol's iodine (4 drips = 1mg).  Don't use the watered down iodine which is ineffective.  Add to it cofactors which can be in the form of Daily C and Dr Wilson's Super Adrenal Stress Formula and 4,000iu per day of Vitamin D3 (Do not take D2 which can cause toxicity!).  I have these here.

(Note: Some of these products, such as full strength iodine, can only be dispensed in NZ by a qualified health professional, so you may require a consultation with me before they can be purchased).

One of the most exciting recent developments for me is the new nutrition science of Systemic Enzymes.  Please do your own research into these.  It is exciting and the results I am getting with people is gobsmackingly encouraging.  There are countless beneficial actions by these enzymes (of which there are thousands within the body).  How they work is well researched and understood and their benefits are more potent as we get older and less well:

Of particular interest are the following enzyme preparations which play a role in removing dead tissue, including old scars from deep within the body, reversing damage to muscles, ligaments and joints, smoothing the inner lining of damaged blood vessels, removing old blood clots and so on:

AST Serrapeptase
 and
AST Serracor

I now have the full range of high quality AST Enzymes here and can help you decide what is the most suitable combination for you and in what dosage.  You can buy these online; but getting them from me works out at just about the same, if not better, and you have the bonus of getting my personal input to ensure you are getting it right for your special circumstances.

Enjoy your studies and please give what I am recommending a go, then tell me your conclusions after three months of consistent application.

Hey - Young people, just because you are a fraction my age it does not mean this does not apply to you.  Take iodine for example:  More than 90% of you are deficient in iodine.  Optimising your iodine improves your energy and mental clarity, it protects you from viral and fungal infections, including foul body odour.  Your children will be born with an IQ 10-20 points higher than yours (read the e-book).  You'll have stronger muscles and smooth, clear skin!

Does sushi provide enough dietary iodine?

"I'd worked out that a dozen pieces of sushi a week was what i needed to meet my iodine demands... much more than that and i'd get manic... although now thats not enough, I've doubled it plus take kelp flakes and still waiting for my metabolism to spike."
(name supplied but withheld)

Gary:

Good action, but still worth testing your iodine levels, including the possible presence of toxic halides which block iodine (positive in about 14% of those tested,  about 80% in swimmers).   It's almost a year of testing iodine levels and only one person has had iodine sufficiency on the first test and that was me.

Iodine is volatile.   If the seaweed for your sushi has been heated,  packed and stored it may have no iodine of significance.  Seaweed must be fresh and raw to be certain that it is rich in iodine.   I have not seen any evidence of benefit to iodine levels from consuming sushi.   I do not know if there is a benefit from fresh seaweed,  but assume there would be much more iodine compared to packaged seaweed which may have been sitting on a shelf for months.    The same problem exists with iodised salt which will progressively lose its iodine while in storage and during cooking.  The iodised salt that has been sitting in your pantry for the last year may have little iodine left in it compared to on its date of manufacture.

Kelp gives me a headache because it may no longer be the healthiest of options.  Kelp may contain heavy metals from widespread industrial pollution of  the oceans.  I am not sure if this warning applies to New Zealand kelp.  The main issue with kelp is it may contain quite high levels of bromine which blocks iodine in the body.

You can't win this one!

Nutritional Medicine 101: How to do a "Challenge Test" (updated 2/12/2013)

"Hey, just curious and maybe coincidental, but I tried one drop of Lugols iodine today.  Had a horrible headache and totally out of it today.

Any relationship you think?"
(Name withheld)

It is possible that a nutrient, such as iodine, a nutritional therapy, such as for adrenal fatigue, or a therapy for candida or intestinal parasites may trigger some unpleasant symptoms.

Where there is the coincidence of feeling under the weather and taking a nutrient, like Lugols, how can we be sure it is the iodine and not just mere coincidence?  Perhaps the patient has caught a virus, or just woken that day feeling "off colour" as so often happens for no apparent reason?

Adrenal and thyroid dysfunction, a poor diet and many medications may result in sluggish liver function and sluggish detoxification at the cellular levels.  While this is a controversial subject, I have no doubt that this is the case for many people who have been operating on less than all cylinders.

Anything that upregulates cellular metabolism, including liver function, can result in an increase in discomfort.

Think of an old motor that has been sitting unused and poorly maintained for a long time: When it is restarted there may be considerable difficulty turning the motor over and success may finally be greeted with much unpleasant and worrying coughing, spluttering and blowing of dirty smoke out the rear end before finally bursting fully into life!  This may happen with a person - kind of!

When this happens with a person, the already toxic liver may struggle to cope with the metabolic load of the 1.5 trillion cells of the body off-loading built up toxins into the circulation.  If there is parasitic die-off, the detritus must be disposed of which is an unpleasant, but necessary process for the body to deal with.  All the while, the poor old liver is struggling with disposing of the toxins from within into the bile where it is excreted into the digestive tract.  The result may be headache, aching muscles and joints - and even digestive upset, including nausea.  The digestive upset may be due to the toxic bile upsetting the gut.

In the case of iodine therapy for thyroid dysfunction, there may be an initial over-reaction of the thyroid to the increase in iodine.  This is not necessarily a bad thing; but confirmation that the therapy is on the money.  Think of a person found dying of thirst in the desert.  While they may require several liters of water, resuscitation begins with a teaspoon - not a liter of water.  The same principle applies in the case of nutrient starvation.

If the symptoms are tolerable, where there appears to be a reaction, then the best action may be to hunker down until you break through.  This may take a few days.  If the symptoms are intolerable and/or we are still not sure if the nutritional therapy is the cause (the cause may be a virus, for example) then we do this version of the "Challenge Test".
  • Stop all nutrients for 24 hours, or for as long as it takes for symptoms to disappear then...
  • Start again with the nutritional therapy but at a level lower than before.
  • If there are no symptoms after a week, then step up the dosage a little and keep steady for another week.
  • Keep incrementally increasing each week until you have reached your target dosages as determined by your health practitioner.
  • If symptoms return then stop for another 24 hours, or for as long as it takes for symptoms to disappear, and then resume at the level below which symptoms again arose.
  • Continue this process for as long as it takes to reach your target levels symptom-free.
This is a most useful procedure for determining what is having an effect on your body.  It is also a nutritional treatment procedure in itself (Consult your health practioner about how to use this procedure):

Imagine this being a bit like "tidal flushing" of a polluted estuary - with the initial flush of the tide, much polluted muck is dislodged and carried out to sea.   This is very unpleasant, initially; but with each tidal flush, the water becomes cleaner and cleaner and estuary gradually returns to a pristine environment with abundant life.  The same occurs within your body.

If you are taking multiple supplements, or suspect a food may be the culprit, you may do a variation of the above by eliminating all of the suspects from the diet, waiting until you are symptom-free and then gradually reintroduce each item back into the daily diet, one at a time, carefully monitoring symptoms.

The iodine deficiency epidemic and what you can do to protect yourself (Updated 25/11/13)

The iodine deficiency epidemic

Iodine deficiency is a widespread epidemic that comes with a very, very long list of health problems, including depression, thyroid disease, cardiovascular disease, dementia, mental retardation, obesity, auto immune nervous disorders, heavy metal toxicity and most cancers.  In fact, iodine deficiency may have a crucial role in just about every ailment known to mankind.

Iodine deficiency in New Zealand

Of the 478 New Zealand patients so far tested (November 2013), using the Thyrodine test, it was found that 91% are iodine deficient with many being severely deficient.  Of those 91%, 14% showed evidence of exposure to toxic halides (chlorine, fluorine and bromine).  These toxic halides block the iodine receptors in the cells, preventing the uptake of iodine.  Anybody who has been exposed to toxic halides, such as hair dressers, dairy farmers, swimmers and industrial workers may have been harmed by toxic halides.  Regular use of household chlorinated cleaners may cause harm to the thyroid.

My own analysis of Thyrodine test results show clearly that competitive swimmers are the worst performers on this test, presumably due to spending many hours exercising vigorously in chlorinated and fluoridated water.  From an athlete's viewpoint: Low thyroid function due to iodine deficiency means poor performance and being very prone to problems like sore muscles, weak muscles, tendonitis and a weak heart!

Test finds 91% rate of iodine deficiency in a group of New Zealand patients:

Elite swimmers are the worst performers!

I am finding that vegetarians are also poor performers on this test, as appear to be dairy farmers; but it is still too early in the testing to be sure of these, since the numbers are too small to be sure.  The common connection between swimmers, dairy farmers and vegetarians is exposure to substances that are known to interfere with thyroid function:

Many vegetables are known to be "goitrogens".  Goitrogens are substances that suppress the function of the thyroid gland by interfering with iodine uptake, which can, as a result, cause an enlargement of the thyroid.

Foods that are considered to be goitrogens
Broccoli
Broccolini
Brussels sprouts
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Chinese Broccoli
Collards
Daikon
Kale
Kohlrabi
Millet
Mustard
Peaches
Peanuts
Pine nuts
Radishes
Red Radish
Rutabaga
Soy
Spinach
Strawberries
Turnips
Watercress

Of course, these foods are healthy and should be in the diet; but may present a problem when consumed frequently in large amounts, such as if a vegetarian and especially if juicing vegetables. Eating large amounts of goitrogenic vegetables may cause low thyroid function and consequent fatigue.  The tradition of fermenting vegetables (think: "sauerkraut") is believed to reduce the slowing effect on metabolism while releasing more nutrients per serving.

Iodine is a member of the "Halogen" class of the elements.  More reactive elements, in their order of reactivity, are fluorine, chlorine and bromine.  When these are present, they bully iodine, suppressing thyroid function.  They are potent goitrogens.

Fluorine and chlorine are found in most municipal water supplies in New Zealand.  Chlorine is found in much more concentrated amounts in pool water.  Chlorine may be necessary, in most municipal water systems, for preventing water-borne diseases; but there is no benefit and only harm from ingesting chlorine at the end of the delivery chain.  Like fluorine, once it is in the water it is not easy to get it out.

While fluoride may be beneficial for tooth enamel, health officials conveniently refuse to acknowledge the known damaging effect of the halogens, other than iodine, on human metabolism; or that fluoride is the most damaging.

Fluorine is the active ingredient in some rat and opossum baits and is the active ingredient of nerve gas which the Syrians know all about. Yet it is safe to dump into our drinking water - figure that one out for me please!

Imported vegetables and fruit may have been fumigated with the halogen element called bromine which has a direct negative effect on thyroid function.  Bromine is also a flame retardant which is used on children's nightwear, drapes, carpets and automobile upholstery.  It is found in some medications and disinfectants.  Bromine and/or chlorine are present in most, if not all plastics.

Chlorine is even more ubiquitous than fluorine and bromine:  It is used in many household and industrial cleaning agents, including some of the chemicals used by dairy farmers to sterilise and flush milking equipment and stainless steel tanks.  You can see the possible connection here between diary farmers and other groups such as swimmers.

Iodine is one of the safest of all the nutrients required for healthy bodily functions

While there is much misinformation circulating, including within medical quarters, the evidence is clear that iodine is very safe to take.

There is a small possibility that supplementary iodine may cause a temporary reaction, such as swollen glands in the neck and general feelings of malaise.  This is not necessarily a bad thing: it shows that we may have hit the problem on the button.  Symptoms are controlled within tolerable limits by reducing the daily iodine intake while maintaining a generous intake of its nutritional co-factors such as magnesium and vitamin C.  Your health practitioner is there to help work through any difficulties with getting from a condition of deficiency to sufficiency.

When taking iodine as a supplement, it is essential that there is a generous intake of nutrients that support the uptake and use of iodine.  These include:
  • Multi mineral salt such as Celtic or Himalayan salt (1-2 teaspoons daily)
  • Selenium 200-400mcg/day
  • Vitamin C 3,000 to 6,000mg/day
  • Magnesium 300 to 600mg/day
  • B group of vitamins
  • Enough water (free of chlorine and bromine) to have you peeing several times a day but not getting up all hours of the night!
The amount of iodine to be prescribed is best determined by your health practitioner and guided by an accurate test of iodine status, such as the "Thyrodine" test.

Is it an infection?

A person who is deficient in iodine will tend to be prone to viral infections, such as the flu, colds, tonsillitis, inner ear and sinus infections (think of swimmers).  Iodine, when sufficient within the body, will aid the body with becoming very resistant to such infections.  So, if you develop a sore throat, for example, while taking iodine, consider the possibility that you have a new infection, or the flare up of an old one, and not a reaction to the iodine.  If the iodine is suspected to be causing any kind of reaction, then we may just have to work through it as your body adjusts. Please read on....

Recommended daily Dietary Allowances for Iodine versus what is optimum for a long and healthy life?

The RDA for iodine, as with most nutrients, is ridiculously low.  The amounts recommended by the WHO (refer chart below) do not apply to you.  The RDA is what is estimated to be sufficient to prevent outright malnutrition.  In the case of iodine the RDA is the minimum amount to avoid goitre and mental retardation, but that's about that.  The levels recommended by WHO are far too low and also do not take account individual differences in need, nor the confounding factors, such as widespread population exposure to increasing amounts of toxic halides (chlorine, fluorine and bromine).

If you are wanting to live a long and healthy life, or wishing to overcome a health problem like fibromyalgia, fibrocystic breast disease or thyroid disease, then the WHO RDA for iodine is not for you.  You need much, much more - usually 500 times more!

For guidance about what it takes for a long and healthy life, I recommend that we ignore WHO RDAs, unless we live in an impoverished 3rd World environment, and take notice of the Okinawa Centenarian Study.  Okinawa Centenarians consume about 500 times the RDA for iodine.

Table 1: Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for Iodine [2]

Birth to 6 months110 mcg*110 mcg*
7–12 months130 mcg*130 mcg*

* Adequate Intake (AI)
The World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ICCIDD) recommend a slightly higher iodine intake for pregnant women of 250 mcg per day [3,7].

What is Optimum intake for iodine for a long and healthy life?

There is no optimum that I can recommend without first doing some testing of your iodine levels and then repeating the test later on to see how you have responded.  Optimum for most people would appear to be from 12-24mg of Lugols iodine, with nutritional co-factors, per day.  But that depends hugely upon the individual and this can only be determined by testing iodine status.  As with all nutritional interventions, accurate testing should be done to determine need (The same applies to drugs as well; but you would be amazed at the cavalier way so many harmful drugs are dished out left, right and center and with little or no ongoing monitoring!).

Fact: Thousands and thousands of people die each year from taking poorly prescribed and poorly monitored drugs; whereas there are no recorded deaths from taking vitamins and minerals, including iodine.

I am not aware of a single fatality from taking a vitamin pill in New Zealand over the previous 40 years.

How to safely overcome Iodine starvation

Think of a person who has been found dying of thirst in the desert: While the victim may need liters of water to be restored to good health, the process of rehydration is gradual, starting with a teaspoon of water.  The same may be the case with iodine deficiency as measured with the Thyrodine test.  A person who is severely deficient in iodine, and who may have been this way for many years, may be sensitive to added iodine, so we may be wise to start with a low dose and to take our time.

The motto, in such cases of suspected iodine sensitivity due to severe iodine deficiency, is:

"Start Low - Go Slow!"

Iodine promotes mental alertness and boosts energy.  Have the iodine with the vitamin C drink that I usually recommend to go with it and take it in the morning and afternoon and not in the evening, just in case it may cause insomnia.

Here is what to do, if you think you are having any kind of uncomfortable reaction to iodine supplementation:
  • Stop the supplementary iodine for 24-48 hours, or for as long as it takes to feel any symptoms to disappear.  Keep taking the supporting supplements such as vitamin C and magnesium.
  • Contact your health practitioner and discuss what you are experiencing and follow the advice given which is usually as follows:
  • Once symptoms appear to have settled:  Recommence at the previous level of iodine before any symptoms were noticed.
  • If there is no exacerbation after 1-2 weeks, then increase the total by 6mg in a day - not the usual 12mg.
  • Hold there for a week.  If your practitioner has advised to make further increases, please do so by 6mg per week and no more.
  • If there is a return of symptoms, then stop once again, as per above and then restart at a level below which the symptoms again arose.
  • Repeat this process for as long as you and your health practitioner decide is necessary, or until you have reached your target intake and/or repeats of the Thyrodine test indicate that you have achieved iodine sufficiency.
  • Repeat the Thyrodine test at about 6-8 weeks to get a measure of what has been happening and follow the new advice of your health practitioner.
Got the idea?

How to maintain iodine sufficiency

The maintenance dose per day for iodine, once a person is "iodine sufficient" is not entirely clear and will always vary between people.  Even size of one's body makes a difference.  A swimmer in chlorinated and fluoridated water may require large daily amounts of iodine to keep healthy.

This is why Thyrodine testing and repeat testing is most important.  Repeating the Thyrodine test now and then will determine what your personal iodine intake needs to be in order to maintain lasting iodine sufficiency.  Normal procedure is to repeat the Thyrodine test at 6-12 week intervals, if aggressively supplementing with iodine, or at six monthly intervals if in maintenance mode.  Exactly what you do will be determined in consultation with your health practitioner.

Here is just about everything you ever wanted to know about iodine and health!

I am now able to provide accurate iodine testing for my clients.
http://blog.garymoller.com/2013/09/accurate-thyrodine-iodine-testing-is.html

The following is gleaned from sources such as:
http://doudyeissa.blogspot.co.nz/

Iodine was once a common ingredient in many foods such as bread. Iodine was removed from our breads  a few decades ago and replaced with Bromine. Bromine worsens iodine-deficiency problems because it inhibits absorption of iodine in the body. It is also a known carcinogen, along with the other halides, chlorine and fluorine which are in most water supplies.  Chlorine, bromine and fluorine are now found everywhere, including in plastics,.

Iodine is a body detoxifier. It has been proven to detoxify the body by flushing the following harmful substances out of the body:

– Bromine
– Fluoride
– Chlorine
– Mercury
– Lead
– Aluminum
– Cadmium

Iodine deficiency is linked to the following:

– Thyroid disease
– Prostate cancer
– Breast cancer
– Ovarian cancer
– Endometrial cancer
– Ovarian cysts
– Fibrocystic Breast Disease
- Fibromyalgia (strong evidence supports fibromyalgia is simply iodine deficiency)

Iodine is not toxic to normal cells but is toxic to cancer cells
In addition to causing cancer, an iodine deficiency will cause existing cancer to be more aggressive. Iodine is responsible for controlled cell death - a normal, necessary function of out bodies. Iodine plays a huge role in keeping cells in check so they don't grow out of control and overtake the body. Cancer cells are cells that keep growing and don't die! (thus lumps/tumors)

Iodine deficiency seems like a logical explanation for cancer

Coincidentally, Japanese women have lower rates of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancers as well as fibrocystic breast disease. Go figure! Their diets are loaded with iodine from fish and seaweed!

Suspect Iodine deficiency whenever there are unwanted lumps, bumps and hard things!

Iodine supplementation improves / cures the following:

- Thinning hair / hair loss
– Fatigue / tiredness
– Feeling cold
– Brain fog / memory problems
- Muscle pain
- Basically all symptoms of hypothyroidism!

More Benefits of Iodine

A healthy intake of iodine helps in maintaining shiny skin, teeth and hair. Lack of iodine in the body can not only cause hair fall, but also restrain hair growth.

One of the most prominent benefits of iodine is that it influences the functioning of the thyroid gland, thereby increasing the production of the hormone. This increased production of thyroid hormone is directly proportional to the basic metabolic rate. It influences the heart rate, blood pressure, body weight and temperature and also helps in protein synthesis.

Less intake of iodine leads to loss in energy levels and the feeling of being lethargic. Iodine helps in optimum utilization of calories without allowing deposit of excessive fats, thereby raising the energy levels.

The presence of iodine in the body helps in ensuring the apoptosis or programmed cell death, which is essential in the formation of new organs as well as in the removal of malignant cells, like cancer cells or diseased cells.

7 Signs of Iodine Deficiency

Iodine deficiency is a serious problem in the developing world but many Europeans and North Americans are also deficient. Iodine consumption has decreased by about 50% in the United States since the early part of the 20th century.
If you are experiencing any of the below symptoms, you may want to have your thyroid tested as well as your iodine levels and then, after speaking with your doctor, consider whether adding extra iodine to your diet would be beneficial.

  • Hypothyroidism
Low iodine levels can lead to hypothyroidism. This is because iodine regulates thyroid hormones in the body.
Fatigue
  • Fatigue
is a common symptom of iodine deficiency and hypothyroidism.
  • Weight Gain
Low iodine levels can cause weight gain. Weight gain may be one of the early warning signs of hypothyroidism.

  • Depression
Like fatigue and weight gain, depression is a common symptom of hypothyroidism caused by iodine deficiency.
  • Goiter
When iodine levels in the body are too low, the thyroid can enlarge. An enlarged thyroid is referred to as a goiter.
  • Fibrocystic Breast Disease
Research indicates that iodine deficiency may be responsible for fibrocystic breast disease, a condition in which painful but benign lumps develop in the breasts that can worsen with hormonal fluctuations.
  • Pregnancy Complications
Iodine deficiency in pregnant women can lead to complications including miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery and birth defects

Debate about the science of fluoridation is far from "effectively settled" - Updated

Sir Peter Gluckman: Statement on flouride

OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER’S SCIENCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Professor Sir Peter Gluckman, KNZM FRSNZ FMedSci FRS
Chief Science Advisor
Media release
12 June 2013
“The science of fluoride in water is effectively settled. It has been one of the most thoroughly worked questions in public health science over many decades,” says Sir Peter Gluckman, the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor.
In a statement released today on the issue of fluoride in public water supplies, Sir Peter reiterates the scientific facts, saying “it is absolutely clear that at doses used in New Zealand to adjust the natural level to one that is consistent with beneficial effects (0.7-1.0mg/litre), there is no health risk from fluoride in the water.”
So why is there any issue at all?
Sir Peter points to the importance of the values debate around fluoridation, but warns that this should not be misrepresented as a scientific debate.
“An inherent challenge for any public health intervention is the issue of how to balance the common good with individual rights, but this is a question of societal values not science.” Pointing to the similarities with instituting a seatbelt law, he reminds us that while the benefits of wearing a seatbelt had long been proven, whether to apply the science-based knowledge was a question of societal values.
A second values-based concern that the fluoridation issue raises is whether society can accept using food (or in this case water) as a medium for delivering a proven public health intervention. But just as with iodised salt to prevent cretinism and goiter, the scientific debate is closed and it is purely an issue of values.
Sir Peter warns against the misuse or inappropriate and alarmist use of science as a proxy for such values debates. “It is often easier for those seeking to advance values-based concerns to make the science sound scary or more uncertain than it is. Indeed, it becomes a tactic amongst those who become passionate about their cause,” he says. “Such values debates are critical for a healthy democracy, but they cannot proceed usefully if the debate is taken to be about science.”
Scientists do not have a privileged position within a values debate beyond clarifying when science is being misused – such debates must be resolved through the political process - whether local or nationally.

Gary:
I think Professor Gluckman is proving to us that most very good scientists know a heck of a lot about one narrow area of scientific inquiry: It is impossible to be a scientific expert in everything which the science advisor to the Prime Minister presumably is trying to be!  And now Professor Gluckman is an expert on fluoridation which he considers "settled"! Few scientists would ever use such words.  Nothing is ever settled in science - in my opinion anyway.

This Youtube video is about a common form of damage done to teeth by excess fluoride and indicates that the tide may be turning in favour of getting fluoride out of municipal water supplies:

While most of the debate over fluoridation is focused on prevention of tooth decay, sight has been lost of the crucial role of the halides, fluorine, chlorine and bromine and their implication in many diseases, including thyroid disease and cancer such as breast cancer.

These halides dominate their fellow halide, iodine, shoving it out of organs like the thyroid and breast tissues and blocking iodine from attaching to cell receptors.

At the same time, iodine has been as good as completely removed from the modern diet. 90% or more of the New Zealand population are very low in iodine, including most children. Low iodine in the presence of increasing environmental contamination by the other halides (fluorine, clhorine and iodine) are one of the best explanations for the epidemic of thyroid and breast disease, to name a few ailments that may be associated with iodine deficiency.

Fluorine, chlorine and bromine sit on top of iodine on the periodic table.
My interest in the fluoride debate is not so much about the issue of dental decay but from the study of an echelon of exhausted elite swimmers. The common factor appears to be spending many hours soaking in halides, including fluorine.  In my opinion the practice is distinctly unhealthy.
Feedback from the mother of a previously exhausted elite swimmer

Please refer here about the successes from focusing on countering the negative effects of these chemicals:

In my experience thyroid dysfunction is present in about 80% of everyone I have tested over the last five years.  This includes children.  Rates of many cancers, including breast, ovarian and prostate cancer have skyrocketed over the last 30 years.  There is a link between these ailments and iodine deficiency.  This sits very uncomfortably with the increasing contamination of our environment with halides other than iodine; while, during the same period, iodine consumption has declined (Mostly due to the Heart Foundation message to cut out table salt, our only reliable source of iodine).

Conclusion:
  • Sir Peter Gluckman is premature in suggesting that the Debate about the science of fluoridation is "effectively settled".
  • Fluoride and health is a far wider issue than just about its role in preventing tooth decay.
