Gary, do you advise Flu Jab?

If you put aside "political" and financial biases, the evidence for the flu jab is not good.

Take particular note of the Cochrane report with the article a Dr wrote for my blog (refer links to articles below).

But; first, I must digress by asking you a question....

Who do you take your health advice from?

I appreciate that you, the consumer, are in a most unenviable situation where you are inundated with conflicting advice from people like me who use nutrition to improve health and from medical experts who try to cure ill health with drugs: People like Dr Stewart Jessamine, the head of Medsafe and chief apologist for the country's increasing dependence on drugs.  Do drugs make us a healthier population?  Why do these people constantly rubbish natural therapies?

Hardly a week passes without a doctor somewhere saying somthing like these to one of my clients:

"If you continue to take those vitamins from Gary Moller, I will not treat you"

"Those pills are dangerous/ineffective - take these drugs instead"

"Gary Moller is a charlatan"

"Gary Moller's tests are a load of rubbish"

"Its expensive urine"

Who is right?  Who do we believe?  Who do we go with?  Is Gary an unscientific charlatan?

When it comes to health, how does your doctor measure up?

A message to Dr Jessamine:

Dear Dr Jessamine,

http://www.nzsmi.org.nz/documents/Stewart%20Jessamine.pdf
I am sure you are a very nice guy, so please do not take this too personally; but you are in public office and with that comes public scrutiny.  You are a good talker, your bio tells us this.  How about a public debate sometime?  Say, a debate such as: "There are no effective non-drugs alternatives to Tamiflu".  But I am digressing and there is a more simple way to help my readers make sense of all the confusing and conflicting messages coming there way....

When it comes to health, do you walk the talk?  Are you healthier than me?  Okay - about as healthy as me will do.

Would you please be so kind and share with my readers your personal health stats.  After all, you are the health expert who is telling the rest of us how to be healthy, while spending a billion or more of our hard-earned dollars each year on drugs like Tamiflu.  It is reasonable for the public to expect you to walk the talk - To put into practice, personally, all that you know about being healthy.   I am sure you will agree with that.
Is Gary Moller healthy?

So please share with us:

  • How old are you?
  • What's your blood pressure?
  • What's your body composition (muscle, bone, fat, water)?
  • How are your joints?
  • Have you any health issues?
  • Do you take any medication?
  • Have you had any surgery?

To be fair here are my health stats:

  • I am 60 years old.
  • my blood pressure is 120/80 and I can red line my heart at about 170 beats per minutes for at least two continuous hours.
  • I weigh 63 Kg, 9% fat, 44% muscle, 3.1 Kg bone and 63% water.
  • I have excellent joints.
  • I take no medication.
  • I had a knee operation about 30 years ago with 100% recovery.
  • I work very long hours without fatigue.

Check your own doctor out:

Does he or she walk the talk?  Is your doctor in better health than you?  If not, I suggest you run for the door!

The Tamiflu scandal

For years, a number of independent health researchers advised against NZ and other countries stockpiling millions of dollars of Tamiflu and warned that these drugs are not harmless while being of questionable effectiveness.  They were more than ignored by those with their grip on the health purse strings: Anybody, including myself, who they saw as getting in their way, were publicly labelled as nutters, irresponsible and even dangerous.

Here are some articles that I have written about Tamiflu over previous years:

New Zealand will maintain its $32 million stockpile of influenza medicine Tamiflu, despite a major international study throwing doubt on the on the value of the treatment.

When you read the Stuff article, notice how the "establishment" experts and the drugs company executives are scrambling to justify their wasting of millions of our dollars and endangering the safety of the public.

Here's the Cochrane Study if you want to read it for yourself:

You and I have paid millions of dollars for these mostly useless drugs and vaccines.  We get poor through wasted tax dollars fattening Big Pharma waistlines and risk harm if we take these drugs..

There are very good healthy alternatives to drugs to reduce harm caused by flu; but these never get any traction simply because there is no money in them for Big Pharma and the current flawed drugs-based medical paradigm sees these healthy non-drugs measures as being the enemy - which is utterly ridiculous!

Tamiflu - You would have to be nuts to give this to your baby

Whereas the flu is self-limiting, the FDA's capacity for bad decisions is not...
The recent decision by the FDA to approve the use of the antiviral drug Tamiflu for treating influenza in infants as young as two weeks old, belies an underlying trajectory within our regulatory agencies towards sheer insanity.
Tamiflu, known generically as oseltamivir, has already drawn international concern over its link with suicide deaths in children given the drug

Six things you can do to reduce the impact of Swine Flu on your health

"The 1918 has gone: a year momentous as the termination of the most cruel war in the annals of the human race; a year which marked, the end at least for a time, of man's destruction of man; unfortunately a year in which developed a most fatal infectious disease causing the death of hundreds of thousands of human beings. Medical science for four and one-half years devoted itself to putting men on the firing line and keeping them there. Now it must turn with its whole might to combating the greatest enemy of all--infectious disease," As noted in the Journal of the American Medical Association final edition of 1918: (12/28/1918).

My article here is not about how to avoid Swine Flu. It is about how to ensure you do not get knocked around too much should you get a dose of it. There is already plenty of advice about how to avoid it (Washing hands, quarantine etc). What I am about to tell you is what health officials do not tell you.

Swine Flu (H1N1) virus is a relatively mild influenza. Those most at risk of complications include people with:
    • Pre-existing conditions such as asthma and emphysema
    • Weakened immune systems due to factors such as chemotherapy, chronic stress, poor nutrition, poor sleep and medicine such as statins and prednisone
    • The least previous contact with influenza over their lifetime
In my case: If I catch a dose of the Swine Flu, I will welcome it because I am currently in good health and most unlikely to die from the few days of sniffles and aching muscles. I greet the infection with the knowledge that, once I have had this mild virus, I am immune to it for life.

I will then have an innate resistance to this new influenza family.

This is important to me because the H1N1 virus will surely eventually mutate into another variation of the H1Ni and there is the slight, but real, possibility that the new bug has similar qualities to the 1918 Spanish Flu that wiped out millions. My immune system will be primed and prepared for the onslaught.

Here are six things you can easily do to reduce the impact of the virus on your health:
    1. Ensure your vitamin D levels are kept up over winter. We have a "Flu" season because population D levels plummet over winter. Keep yours up with a vitamin D supplement which you can get off me for just $12-$15. Adults can take 4,000iu per day, children 1,000iu per day during winter. In three years of testing vitamin D levels, not one person has returned an "optimum" result and many have been seriously deficient - is there any reason why you should be bucking the trend towards deficiency? High vitamin D levels may reduce your lifetime risk of all cancers by 60-70%, so what are you waiting for?
    2. Ensure you have a good intake of vitamin C with fruit, vegetables and a daily supplement - Ester C is best because one dose per day is enough. Daily intake can be about 2,000mg per day over winter. Kiwifruit are rich in vitamin C and going for as little as $1/kg right now. As an added bonus, vitamin C improves energy levels and is great for hair, skin and nails.
    3. Boost your trace minerals. New Zealand soils are deficient in many trace minerals, including boron, cobalt, selenium and zinc. So far, everyone I have tested for zinc levels (an indicator for several trace minerals) have returned a deficency result. Low levels of zinc and selenium lay you wide open for inflammation and infections such as sore throats and poor healing. I use two supplements to correct these deficiencies: AgeWise Blood Sugar Support and Kordels Selenium ACE. Dosages depend on a person's needs. these supplements have the added bonus of reducing the risks of developing prostatisis (if make and over 40yrs), they may improve male and female virility while reducing sugar cravings.
    4. Take a daily Lysine supplement. Lysine is an amino acid that has antiviral properties. It is used for reducing the ferocity of the cold sore virus. It works when taken daily over the longterm with similar benefits for other viruses, including infuenza. As an added bonus, it is great for skin, hair and nails as well!
    5. Get an infusion of quality protein over the day. Your immune system needs protein to fight the Good Fight. Good athletes and gardeners know that you get better results if you dribble in the nutrients, including protein, rather than give the same in a single big hit each day. Rather than have all your protein in a single meal, divvy it up into three or four servings over the day. Whey protein is the King of proteins. You can get a pot of whey off me. Sprinkle a level spoonful on your breakfast cereal and mix with smoothies and other dishes during the day.
    6. Get plenty of sleep. Seven to eight hours per day. Go to bed by 10pm, have the lights out by 10.30pm and be asleep by 11pm. It is during the hours of 1-3am that your body produces peak levels of Growth Hormone (This is why children and teenagers need lots of deep sleep). In the adult, Growth Hormone repairs and revitalises the body that has been exhausted by a hard day's work. Sex is the recommended knockout drug for those who are slow to fall asleep. With all that vitamin D and trace minerals, you will be feeling more like it and hopefully getting plenty of it one way or another!
    If I catch Swine Flu....

    Should I take Tamiflu?

Virulent it may be; but the Swine Flu is still a relatively mild virus. If you are in good general health and if you have put my nutrition and sleep advice in place early on, there really is no need to take Tamiflu - unless you want to add to the billion or so dollars Roche International is making out of this pandemic. Do not be fooled: Tamiflu is not some harmless drug. It has the potential for serious, harmful side effects. As with all drugs; take only if you really, really have to. Be guided by your doctor on this one, if you are unsure.

Should I take medicines like Panadol (and Tamiflu) to lower my fever?
If you are in good general health, there is no need to take any medicines for a mild flu virus. One of the tools your body uses to kill off a virus is to cook it. Viruses do not tolerate high temperatures, so let the body get on with the job without interference, use cold compresses to relieve the headache and wait for the fever to break. Once the fever breaks, you are on the way to a full recovery and robust immunity to that strain. Good old fashioned chicken broth will assist your recovery by supplying a rich brew of minerals and protein - including collagen.

Do I need to take antibiotics?
Antibiotics work against bacteria - not viruses. Influenza is a virus, so do not take an antibiotic unless your doctor has advised you do (If you already have a lung disease like COPD an antibiotic may be prescribed to lower the risk of secondary bacterial infection). If you are recovering from the flu and then find your health deteriorating for a second time within a week or so of the first infection, it is possible that you have contracted a secondary bacterial infection. Go see your doctor who may prescribe a course of antibiotics. Be sure to complete the full course of treatment.

So, what has changed since the influenza pandemic of 1918 which killed at least 20 million people?
It is interesting to note that the 1918 flu pandemic grabbed hold of humanity in the festering trenches of the 1st World War. This was the perfect breeding ground for the killer: Young men crammed together in the most appalling conditions, immersed in mud and excrement, surrounded by rotting bodies, fed shit for food and deprived of sleep - all the while being shot at, bombed and gassed. Then the survivors were herded into makeshift troop ships and transported home to spread the bug to their stressed and exhausted families.

This reminds me very much of the way modern industrial pig and chicken farming operate - Roll on more variations of Bird and Swine Flu! Perfect conditions for breeding Super Bugs. The next one may by more akin the 1918 killer virus.

If we are really serious about minimising the possibility of breeding killer pandemics, we would do more about the way we treat our animals.

Is the Swine Flu outbreak just a load of hype?

I think it is and so do a lot of other people. It does appear to me to be a beat up to sell a load of anti-viral medicines and flu vaccines. Flu epidemics are best controlled by fostering healthy, de-stressed populations.

These outbreaks put fear into populations and fear is what sells. Whether it be virus outbreaks or Presidential Jumbos and F-16 fighters flying over New York, there is an unnecessary accumulation of fear-mongering for control and for profit. These all add up to a stressed population that is all too willing to give away control to others.

For a concise perspective on the subject, please read this newsletter from Dr W C Douglas, an interesting and out-spoken physician:

Media pigs misinforming public about so-called "epidemic"

Those filthy swine... The swine flu "epidemic" is only a few days old, and Big Pharma is already plotting to make a fortune.

European drug maker Roche announced it was scaling up production of Tamiflu, giving a boost to its stock price and sending millions into the Roche coffers. GlaxoSmithKline, which makes the anti-flu drug Relenza, is also seeing its stock price climb, as investors hope this swine flu is the biggest thing since the bubonic plague.

There's only one problem here – it's not going to happen. You read the Daily Dose because I always give you the straight scoop, and because I'm not afraid to tell you when the mainstream has it wrong.

And they have it wrong on swine flu. It won't be an epidemic – it'll barely even be a ripple. I've run medical clinics in Africa – I know what an epidemic looks like.

    And this isn't it.

The media is blowing swine flu out of proportion so it can feed its 24-hour news cycle – the same media, mind you, that had us convinced that avian flu was going to destroy the planet a few years ago.

But here are the facts about swine flu – it has affected so few people in America that it's hardly worth discussing. There are 64 confirmed cases in America as I'm writing this – not 6,000 or even 600. There are 64.

Of course, the media is fixated on the 100 or so people who have died in Mexico from the swine flu. But let me clue you into something that no one seems to be discussing – health care in Mexico is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. I know – I've been there more times than I can count.

Disease spreads rapidly through Mexico because large areas of the country lack clean water and basic sanitation. Seeing a doctor – let alone a qualified doctor – is a luxury unavailable to most of the population. Of course the flu is killing people in Mexico – so are a lot of other diseases that are successfully treated in America. People in Mexico still die from diarrhea, for Pete's sake!

Yes, they have apparently had some cases of bad swine flu in Mexico. They've had lots of dengue fever and chagas, too, but you don't need to stay up at night worrying about it. Beating the swine flu isn't any different from beating the regular flu. Wash your hands. Avoid large crowds if you can. Get plenty of rest and fluids if you start getting sick.

And don't be afraid to eat pork or any other meat, for that matter, as it's not the pigs who are getting sick. Of course, I'm not recommending you eat Mexican pork – or any food produced in Mexico, for that matter. Hopefully the tainted peppers outbreak of 2008 taught us that. But don't change your diet because of some so-called swine flu epidemic.

It's no epidemic. It's no public health catastrophe. It's good theatre – and nothing more.

What can you do to reduce your risk of catching influenza or a cold this winter

There was a television interview a few days ago of a doctor advising viewers that it was time to get their annual flu jab. This is the jab that contains various substances, including aluminium which is a highly neurotoxic metal that is implicated in diseases such as dementia and Alzheimers. When asked if there was anything that one can do for the lesser rhino virus (colds), he replied, "Absolutely nothing at all!" I take issue with that. There is much that one can do to increase one's resistance to virus infections:

    • Get plenty of sleep and do not burn the midnight oil during the flu and cold season - reduce stress. Take a winter holiday
    • Eat plenty of fruit
    • Ensure your diet is rich in the fat soluble vitamins - New Zealand butter, full fat milk, cod liver oil, wheatgerm oil (vitamin E), fish head soup, liver including pate. Take a vitamin D supplement.
    • A further step is to have a regular intake of garlic, vitamin C and echinacea
    • Have regular beef and chicken broth soups
    • Complete the Active Elements assessment to ensure your body has the tissue salts needed to ward off infection
    • Wash you hands frequently and keep clear of people who are dribbling and coughing
    • Avoid confined, crowded, poorly ventilated rooms, such as class rooms
    • If you do feel a viral infection of any kind coming on, have a supply of Active Elements 7.1 on hand and commence taking immediately as prescribed and for as long as symptoms persist.
While there is ongoing debate about the effectiveness of many of these preventative measures, I am convinced enough to recommend any of these to my readers. None are poisonous.

If you purchase Active 7.1 to keep in your medicine cabinet, I have reproduced the prescribing information below.

    Active 7.1

    Indications:

The homoeopathic and non-homoeopathic ingredients contained in this formula have been traditionally used to relieve the congestion & fever of minor infections such as, colds, flu, upper respiratory tract and middle ear infections, tonsillitis and hay fever and to relieve the pain, heat, irritation & swelling of localised inflammations.

    Directions:

Chew or swallow one tablet every 2 hours with warm water or as advised by your health care professional. (Children over 2 years of age, 1/2 dose).
Not to be used for children under 2 years of age without medical advice. If symptoms persist consult your health care practitioner. Not for the treatment of iron deficiency conditions. Sodium sulphate anhydrous may have a laxative effect. Contains homoeopathic ingredients. No more than 7 doses should be taken in any 24 hour period.

    Active Ingredients per tablet:

Potassium sulfate 6X (5 mcg), Potassium chloride 6X (5 mcg), Sodium sulfate anhydrous 6X (5 mcg), Sodium chloride 6X (5 mcg), Calcium sulfate 6X (5 mcg), Magnesium phosphate 6X (5 mcg), Ferrous phosphate 6X (5 mcg).
Potassium sulfate 50 mg (equivalent to elemental Potassium 22.44 mg), Sodium sulfate anhydrous 100 mg (equivalent to elemental Sodium 32.37 mg), Calcium sulfate 15 mg (equivalent to elemental Calcium 3.49 mg), Magnesium phosphate 70 mg (equivalent to elemental Magnesium 14.48 mg), Iron phosphate 10 mg (equivalent to elemental Iron 3.34 mg).

    Formula does not contain:

Added lactose, yeast, artificial colourings, artificial flavourings or preservatives.

Vitamin D, tuberculosis and winter ailments

Scientists have shown that a single 2.5mg dose of vitamin D may be enough to boost the immune system to fight against tuberculosis (TB) and similar bacteria for at least 6 weeks. Their findings came from a study that identified an extraordinarily high incidence of vitamin D deficiency amongst those communities in London most at risk from the disease, which kills around two million people each year.

    ___________________________________
    Gary Moller comments:
The evidence grows daily showing that improving population health first and foremost lies with low cost commonsense and low-tech measures that revolve about lifestyle and nutrition and not big medicine.

Vitamins D, C and A are essential for a robust immune system and for healthy lungs. There is a very good case for everyone to take additional of these vitamins during winter.

The outbreak of rampant TB within a Palmerston Nth college last year was probably not helped by the kids being required to keep out of the sun all year and the low fat diet that ensures that there is deficiency in the fat soluble vitamins minerals that are so essential for immune health.

Vitamin D deficiency is most likely in dark-skinned immigrant populations that move either from rural areas to cities or from high latitudes to colder lower ones. They are adapted for harsh sun conditions and are therefore at serious risk of vitamin D deficiency when shifting to sunless conditions and also when subjected to crazy "Sun Smart" policies. This is one major factor that explains why just about all health measures for these population groups tends to be very poor, including high rates of tuberculosis.

Free range eggs, grass fed butter, organ meat and raw milk are excellent sources of the fat soluble vitamins. In addition to this, if you and your children are not getting sufficient of these, including up to 2,000mg of vitamin C per day over winter, then you should consider a daily supplement. The best for children is the Floradix Kinderval range of tonics which are also a rich source of minerals. Cod liver oil is a rich source of vitamin D, A and omega 3 which has traditionally been a winter tonic in our family for generations. There is now also a new vitamin D and omega 3 supplement that is available from Thompson's Nutrition (All of these are available from www.myotec.co.nz). Right now, here in New Zealand, vitamin C-rich Kiwi fruit are in season and selling for as low as 99 cents a kilo - yum-yum! I am currently eating 6-10 per day.

Good health may be as simple as eating much more of the forbidden foods (Fatty eggs, whole milk etc), eating more Kiwi Fruit, getting some sun and taking a few nutritional supplements.

Should I immunise my children and should I have the free influenza vaccine at work?

    Hi Gary,
my work have just advised me that they will be offering free 'flu vaccinations.

Last year i did not get the flu, or a bad cold, and this year I am taking the supplements that you have been suggesting.

Will the vaccination have more probable benefits than costs?

    "R" (NZ)

    And:
"What's your take on immunizations? When the boys were born we had a doctor who was also a homeopath and he discouraged immunizations. I know he told us that the vaccines don't always work but they do hinder the development of the immune system so that if a person actually contracts the disease it can be much harder to treat.
We didn't avoid them completely. We've had the kids get the same immunizations I did, smallpox and polio. It seemed to me that those were both diseases that had once been very widespread and quite serious. But we backed away from measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, mumps and hepatitis B.

Some years back our original doctor moved away and the next one, not surprisingly, has a much more "mainstream" view of immunizations and has been after us to have the kids get the complete set. I'm not at all persuaded by his arguments for any of them except hepatitis B which does seem to be a pretty serious condition.

    "R" (USA)

Gary Moller comments:I knew that this topic could not be avoided! The two "R's" have forced my hand. While I am not an expert on this matter, I am a parent and have followed the immunisation debate for a long time and agonised over the pros and cons again and again. I should add that I have participated in the Flu vaccine campaigns when they first came out, offering free shots to the companies that my business was contracted to provide corporate health programme to.

All four of my children have had minimal vaccinations, including the recent NZ$200+ million meningococcal B vaccination programme. Despite my children being theoretically in the high risk demographics for this terrible disease.

Here is how I understand things: All vaccines contain tiny amounts toxic metals, principally mercury and aluminium. These are highly toxic to the nervous system, particularly the developing brain. Other organs, including the pancreas which produces insulin, is extremely sensitive to mercury. Deposits of aluminum are thought by some experts to remain as an irritant in tissues and disturb the immune and nervous system for a lifetime.

While it may be claimed that a vaccine contains "safe" or "trace" amounts of these toxic substances, we know that these metals are extremely toxic and they accumulate principally in fatty tissue, including the brain. While a single dose may, in fact be "safe" the effect is similar to what happens with x-ray imaging: The doses are cumulative and the average child may have 30, 40 or more shots of metal-laden vaccine by age 5. Besides; what really is "safe". We know that a small percentage of the population is very sensitive to mercury and what say your child is one of them?

Being cumulative, we must take into account exposure to these toxic metals from all sources, including contaminated foods, water and even cooking utensils and amalgam fillings. While no single source may be "unsafe" the sad fact is exposure from all sources can add up to being pretty damn scary!

Here is a calculator to work out how much cumulative mercury you and your children have been exposed to from vaccinations: http://www.909shot.com/Issues/HgCalculator.htm

We must also take account the synergistic interaction with other heavy metal contaminants, principally lead, and their cumulative effects on sensitive organs including the brain. Once in the body, these are not easy to get rid of and the health effects can be devastating. Incidentally, the non toxic metal magnesium is known to be a weak heavy metal chelator - freeing them so that they can be expelled from the body.

While we may not be able to do anything about many sources of contamination, it just makes good sense to reduce exposure to the "controllable sources" of contamination, including vaccinations.

Do vaccines per se cause harm, or is it the metal ingredients?
As you would gather from the above, I believe there is cause for parental concern about the metals that are found in vaccines and in increasing amounts from environmental contamination. I am not convinced that the vaccines themselves are the main risk of causing adverse effects. Having said this, there is a girl (Now a grown woman) living not far from us who is in a permanent vegetative state as a consequence of the MMR vaccine and the first patient ever assigned to me after graduating was in a wheel chair after the small pox vaccine prior to her big OE got into her spinal cord.

    Should you vaccinate your child?
This is a really tough one for parents and one we agonise about constantly. In each case it is a matter of assessing the risks and making the appropriate decision. In our case, we have decided that a good diet, a warm home, good oral hygiene, hand washing, regular dental care, lots of sunlight and exercise and exposure to bugs early in life offset the risks of not being vaccinated. We prefer not to risk the brains of our children from excessive toxic metal contamination. This strategy has served us well for 24 years.

We ensured that each child received their mother's antibodies via her breast milk and we took every opportunity to expose our kids to childhood bugs including measles, mumps and chickenpox. The sooner a child is exposed to these the better. If a child's friend had chickenpox, we asked if our child could visit to play.

If, as adults, they decide to undergo vaccination for this or that, then that is their choice which we have given them. In one of our daughter's cases, she received several vaccinations when she enrolled in the army. That was her choice and the risk was presumably minimal, since she was a grown woman by then with a mature nervous system and robust immune system.

What about the free annual flu vaccine?
Your first defense against influenza is a strong immune system and a vaccine should not be used to make up for the lack of one. This means (for adults measures such as):
    • A fresh wholefoods diet that is rich in vitamins, minerals, protein and natural anti-oxidants.
    • Plenty of natural vitamin A from natural concentrated sources including animal organs, cod liver oil, grass fed butter and free range egg yolk (Incidentally many of these are the wrongly labelled "unhealthy" foods!). Stay away from synthetic vitamin A.
    • Ensuring that you enter winter with optimal vitamin D levels and ensuring that your winter diet is rich in high vitamin D foods (Generally the same foods that are rich in vitamin A).
    • Taking herbal and nutritional supplements that augment natural immunity such as olive leaf extract and vitamin C
    • Taking about 2,000 mg of vitamin C per day
    • Getting optimum sleep
    • Avoiding excess stress that leaves you wasted
    • Not over-exercising
There was a time I had the annual flu vaccines. I won't any more. I will add that I have been in great health since changing my lifestyle, including work and diet and that includes getting out in the sun which I had previously avoided. Most notably, I no longer get hammered by the bugs the kids seem to bring home from school every 2nd week.

How much vitamin C should an athlete take to avoid colds?

It is the common experience of many athletes to finish an exhausting event like a marathon or iron man triathlon and feel surprisingly good; only to crash several days later going down with a virus an injury like tendonitis or feeling very depressed and tired or all of the latter. This may be fully or partially due to the delayed effects of the extreme oxidative stress suffered during the exhausting exercise (This can be either from competition or heavy training). In many cases, such as multiday events there is the added stress of sleep deprivation which hammers one's immune system.

"A practical way to reason is that, if a person carrying out heavy exercise feels that he or she has colds too often, he or she could (should?) try vitamin C.

The doses have been about 0.5 to 2 grams per day in the controlled trials and that kind of doses are safe for ordinary people (and cheap). In the US nutritional recommendations they consider that safe range goes to some 2 g/day. That is a conservative limit in my opinion, but with the current knowledge, I do not think it makes much sense to use substantially larger doses even though I consider them safe.

If we assume that the oxidative stress caused by the marathon would b protected against by higher vitamin C levels in the body, I think that the time scale would be initiation a few days before and continuing a few days after the marathon (one or two times per day I would think)". Harri

(Excerpt from correspondence between Gary Moller and Harri Hemilä, MD, PhD,Department of Public Health,University of Helsinki, Finland. Dr Hemilä is one of the world's leading researchers into the benefits or otherwide of substances like vitamin C and vitamin E).

Dr Hemilä's impressive work in this area makes fascinating reading.

With what we know about free radicals and how they are generated during exhasting or intense exercise, it would make good sense to anticipate excessive oxidative stress to your body and take preventive measures, if you are doing heavy training or have an exhausting competition coming up. This migh also apply to work and personal situations that may be emotionally as well as physically exhausting.

Using Dr Hemilä's advice as our guide, here is my guidance:

    • If you are doing exhausting training take 1-2,000mg of vitamin C per day
      • If you have a history of frequent colds, take towards the upper level (2,000mg)
    • Take 2,000mg per day over the 2 days before an exhausting competition and for 2 days afterwards
    • If you are taking Wagner Ester C, then you could reduce these guidelines to 50% and you will probably get the same protection or still better.
    • Regardless of vitamin C supplementation, take a daily Super Smoothie that has red berries and whey protein added and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
    • Go to sleep before 11pm every night and be out of bed by 7am
    • Get plenty of sunlight on your body to boost your vitamin D levels. Get a blood test of your levels.
    • An athlete requires more minerals and B group vitamins than most
    • Other antioxidant food extracts like high potency garlic extracts could be added to the diet
    • Have recovery days within your training schedule and take 3-5 days rest after an exhausting competition like a marathon.
I will be posting some guidelines about use of vitamin E which is currently a confused and controversial matter.

One Flu over the Cuckoo's Nest

Sure, we should be prepared for a possible Bird Flu Pandemic; but I do not agree that we should be stockpiling billions of $$$ on antiviral drugs that are of questionable efficacy and safety. We should be concentrating on:
    • Ensuring that all of our citizens have robust immune systems that resist infectious attacks - concentrating on our most vulnerable - the elderly, the young and the infirm
    • Cleaning up the world's poultry industry that is breeding these bugs
    • Practicing effective public and personal hygiene practices like hand-washing with soap several times a day
On the hand-washing that is recommended in the emergency preparedness brochures; this is where we really are in Cuckoo-Land. I agree entirely that hand-washing is everyone's first line of defense against infection. However; this recommendation is often impractical, especially in schools where infections like influenza run rife during winter. My mother, Maisie, a retired school teacher, first pointed out to me the impracticality of getting school children to wash their hands. I have subsequently written several articles about this.
Each child should be washing their hands for at least 30 seconds at least 4 times a day while at school to remove the snot, saliva and also the dirt picked up in the playground and from door knobs, etc, etc. Here is the school maths:
    20+ children per wash basin x 30 seconds/child x 4 times a day = 40 minutes without adding changeover time.
This means constant queueing throughout the breaks in class activity and, let's face it, this never happens with all of the kids usually being given no more than a few minutes to get the job done, if at all. To expect this to happen properly and consistently is just plain nuts.
Besides, if it did happen, already financially challenged schools would be flat broke within a few weeks and would require a full-timer employed to just keep the soap and hand towels flowing.
Of course, there are practical solutions; but these require investment. We could start by reallocating some of those billions being spent on mostly useless stocks of Tamiflu.
