Book review: On the Wings of Mercury – by Lorraine Moller

On the Wings of Mercury – by Lorraine Moller

CHRISTOPHER KELSALL SEPTEMBER 12, 2011 1

primary language
English
original title: On the Wings of Mercury
(C) Copyright – 2010 – Christopher Kelsall
On the Wings of Mercury – a self–penned autobiography by Lorraine Moller, a world-class middle and long distance runner – is one of the most riveting and highly emotional tell-all memoirs – a must read.
Moller begins her witty stream of consciousness in self-deprecating style, where she describes her birth and how even then she forced people to run beyond their scope, in this case the family physician, who had to run just to make the delivery in time. Moller captures the reader’s attention immediately and never lets go.
The prologue starts with:
‘Legend tells of fire-breathing dragons that lurk in the bowels of the earth beneath Catalonia. What I sense this summer afternoon of 1992 in Barcelona as I survey the race course is that the road stretching between me and my dream is a steamy tar-pit of reptilian breath, threatening to suck the water out of my skin and desiccate my precious hope for gold’.

I just completed my first marathon on the weekend (SBS Christchurch) and everything went really well

Hi there Gary. I would just like to pass on a big thank you for the advice you have given me through this blog site. I just completed my first marathon on the weekend (SBS Christchurch) and everything went really well. I used your "training for a marathon" publication like a bible while training for this event. Whilst my training was less than ideal (due to finding time around family and work) I was pleased to have completed this great event. I finished in 3hrs 35min which I was pleased with as I have only been running for about 15 months. I am looking forward to competing in more of these events (Half and Full) but for now I am looking forward to a good long rest. Once again thank you for this Blog site and the effort you put into it. Also I recommend to anyone Lorraine mollers book "On the wings of mercury' this is a great read.
Thanks again
Shane

Book review - "On the Wings of Mercury" penned by Lorraine Moller

"On the Wings of Mercury - a self–penned autobiography by Lorraine Moller – a world-class middle and long distance runner - is one of the most riveting and highly emotional tell-all memoirs - a must-read.

Moller begins her witty stream of consciousness in self-deprecating style, where she describes her birth and how even then she forced people to run beyond their scope, in this case the family physician, who had to run just to make the delivery in time. Moller captures the reader’s attention immediately and never lets go.

Zeus gave her gold in a sense and in-turn Moller gives us an autobiography so good and so entertaining, the reader feels her indignation, her humility, gets angry right along with her and rejoices in the humor and the joy of her glory.

On the Wings of Mercury stands out amongst the vast library of athletics memoirs and rises above all others. As Dr. Peter Snell wrote, “this is the most compelling autobiography I have ever read.”

"Incidental Joy" - An article by George Beinhorn about Arthur Lydiard and Lorraine Moller

Here's an interesting article about Arthur Lydiard and my sister, Lorraine Moller.

The author, George Beinhorn, has written a book about running and fitness. While I have not read it, it does appear to worth getting hold of.

"On the Wings of Mercury" by Lorraine Moller - one man's opinion

"I have now finished Lorraine’s book.

A good read, although the New Age and paganism stuff is a bit bizarre, and her choices concerning men have been a bit unwise over the years.

The chief take-home message seemed to be not to do anything new or unusual with food, drink, or preparation just before an important race.

But I still don’t know why anyone would bother to run more than 50 metres at a time".

"G"
PS: "I would be happy to drive a car for the length of a half (or even a full) marathon."

"On the Wings of Mercury" makes Border's Best New Zealand Titles Short list

Here is what Borders has to say of Lorraine's book which it lists on its shortlist of Best New Zealand Titles:
"Lorraine Moller is one of New Zealand's greatest women distance runners. Four times an Olympic contender, winner of three Avon Women's Marathons, winner of the Boston Marathon, three times the winner of the Osaka International Ladies' Marathon, and a Commonwealth Games medallist, she is indeed a living legend of the running world.
Lorraine began running barefoot with her father near her home in Putaruru and went on to win a bronze medal in the marathon at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympic Games. Here, in her own words, Lorraine looks back on a golden era of athletics in New Zealand and the personalities she ran with — Arthur Lydiard, Dick Quax, Rod Dixon, Anne Audain, Allison Roe and others. She traces her development as a world-class competitor and reveals the strategies and coping techniques that took her to the world stage.
A longtime battler for equality and professionalism in distance running, Lorraine is upfront about her struggles with officialdom. Here is a candid, personal story of an extraordinary life: intense, insightful and highly entertaining."

On the Wings of Mercury by Lorraine Moller - reader feedback

"Gary,
.... I received the book as a Christmas present and couldn't put it down. I found my Christmas and New Year home projects getting in the way of reading the book.
As a former harrier with the Owairaka club running at the same time as Lorraine set out on her career I found her story a truly compelling read...."
Ian

"I've just last night finished Lorraine's autobiography. Its excellent - did you know you had not only an international runner in the family but also a writer of considerable ability? its a comedy, a tragedy and epic all rolled into one: when is Peter Jackson calling?"
Bruce

"I am a little over half way through Lorraine's book now, and loving it. If I didn't have a one year old to run around after (just lost my cell phone to the toilet - what fun to throw things in there!), or need sleep, I probably wouldn't put the book down. And there aren't many books that keep my attention... she has an impeccable memory, or kept a very detailed diary!"
Carrie

"Hi Gary....
Just thought I would let you know I have finally read Lorraine's novel and absolutely loved it.

It was an incredibly inspiring and unstoppable read (I read it in 2 days!) not just for the athlete, aspiring athlete or runner, but also for women generally. I loved how Lorraine gave such candid insight to the fact that 'superstars' are human too capable of making the same very human mistakes we all can make.

I felt like she was in part, telling my story & yet my so-called athletic ability never made it beyond the South Island Champs!! I also loved the ending; how it implied that acceptance of who you are as a person, warts and all, is the ultimate prize, the true 'gold'. ...."

Book Review: On the Wings of Mercury by Lorraine Moller

On the Wings of Mercury, by Lorraine Mary Moller. Longacre Press. 360 pages. $39.95.

Reviewed by Greg Lautenslager

The 1992 Olympic Marathon culminated on a long, winding hill, called Montjuic, that led to the finish line in the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona. The struggle to the top of that pinnacle mirrors the career of legendary New Zealand runner Lorraine Moller.

In her autobiography, On the Wings of Mercury, Moller doesn’t just detail the facts and figures of her career but takes us inside her mind and her soul to share her life’s journey from her native Putaruru in the Waikato.

Her story is as much a rollercoaster ride as running a marathon and she writes with the charismatic boldness of a front-runner. She explains her incontinence problem as a young child that led to hospital stints and doctors who wondered if she would live through it.

She tells about the rivalry of another great Kiwi runner that provided motivation. She exposes her personal life that included broken engagements, strained and strange relationships, divorce, death, her search for true love and somehow balancing all of these and staying on track for an Olympic medal.

Her journey takes us on a tour of Commonwealth Games, World Cross Country Championships, Olympics, and marathon triumphs in Japan, the United States, Great Britain, and Brazil. We learn about athletes trashing hotel rooms and train compartments, doing drugs, and banning together in the fight for equality and professionalism in distance running. We discover a support system that includes New Zealand running stars and coaches John Davies and Dick Quax, and her father, Gordon, who was her first running partner.

Moller keeps herself and the story flowing with the help of the Roman god Mercury, who appears throughout book. Her races are a battle with her own mind and will as much as with her competitors. Her name for the doubts that creep into her mind throughout the marathon is Ms Rational, who tempts her to settle for silver or bronze or her customary and safe position of fifth-place. She eventually uses an imaginary pink plastic bubble to block such negative thoughts and stands naked before the Greek god Zeus to gain inspiration for a final Olympic championship bid.

Of all the biographies and autobiographies of sports stars it will be hard to find one more compelling, entertaining, and deep as On the Wings of Mercury. Moller has made it to the top of the hill and should be awarded a gold medal for her writing effort. - A

Book Review - On the Wings of Mercury by Lorraine Moller

Book Review by Leanne Asher
For those of you who haven't read Lorraine's book you are missing out on a truly different type of story. Often when reading a book about a runner it focuses solely on their running. Lorraine has written something quite different.
Lorraine has put her soul out for all to see the nuts and bolts from her childhood experiences and relationships good and bad to her personal odysseys in a bid to obtain the elusive Olympic gold medal.
The book does not revolve around the actual events and her performances, but the journeys she took to get there. One such trip after being selected for the 1996 Olympic Games, trekking to Delphi north of Athens to visit the world of gods, goddesses, oracles and athletics collecting the magical olive oil from Zeus's olive grove.
Lorraine shows a personal side as she delves into her inner workings and how she can use her mental strength to give her a further edge, how she can use not only anger but a calmer side to channel her performance to beat her opposition.
This book shows a whole different side to an athlete, not the person that we see on the television as they cross the finish line after 42.2 kilometres, but what makes up the inner psyche of a truly international athlete who has many credits to her name.
In reading the book I see the sheer determination and grit displayed to carry on when many would have said enough is enough. Still heading out the door to do a session when her body was telling her that it was not capable, out there in the searing heat, running at times in what can only have been sheer pain.
Thank you Lorraine for sharing your story with us in a very candid way and giving us an insight into your life which I hope you look back on with fondness as you reminisce on the success of your athletic career. Lorraine Moller - the Olympian, congratulations.

On the Wings of Mercury by Lorraine Moller may be Number Two on the NZ Best Seller's List

"Gary, please thank and congratulate Lorraine for a superb book. Her down to earth Kiwi writing was a pleasure to digest. I could laugh out loud one minute and tears would be welling the next.
A bonus is I even picked up tips I could transfer to my sport - the do's and don'ts with opposition... Ms Rationale...
My autographed copy will be passed through many family and friends and I hope they find it as inspiring as I have."
Wynel

Word is out that "On the Wings of Mercury" is about to be listed for the first time on the Best Sellers list. It is rumoured to be coming onto the list in Number Two place which is a pretty good way to kick off.

You should be able to check this out any day now when the updated list is released on the Booksellers NZ website http://www.booksellers.co.nz/

One reader liked the book so much, he purchased 70 copies to give to his staff and business clients as an end of year gift. What a good idea!

"On the Wings of Mercury" - Lorraine Moller's autobiography has finally landed!

6 September, 2007
What an absolutely fantastic book. "On the Wings of Mercury" is beautifully written and had me hooked from the outset. This book is hard to put down! It was just wonderful to read an autobiography that was so honest and explored the emotional and spiritual side of life and running. It's a reminder of all the things that have to be perfectly aligned (and the impediments that get in the way of that ideal state) for a champion runner to win big races, something that is often lost in the detail by mere mortals like me. Lorraine, you should be immensely proud of this book, it's likely to be an icon.
Nick Olson

Foreword by Peter Snell
"On the basis of consistent, world-class performances, Lorraine Moller has proven to be New Zealand’s greatest female distance runner. Her credentials include three victories in the Avon International Women’s Marathon, a win in the 1984 Boston Marathon and three times a winner of the prestigious Osaka International Ladies’ Marathon.

In a feat still unmatched today, Lorraine completed four consecutive Olympic Games, commencing with the first marathon for women in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The climax of her career was an Olympic bronze medal in the marathon at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

On the Wings of Mercury is the most compelling autobiography I have ever read. Rather than a sports book filled with events and statistics, it is a book written by a sportswoman. Lorraine takes the reader on a fascinating odyssey: moving from her early childhood experiences, which helped shape her as a runner and person, through to the mature, articulate woman she is today — who at her best could beat anyone in the world.

Lorraine is a storyteller of considerable skill and she writes with an outstanding command of language and use of metaphor. Throughout this powerful story she holds the reader’s attention and respect. It is unusual for an athlete to write their own story without journalistic assistance, but perhaps this is what has enabled Lorraine to better explore her innermost thoughts, her own motivations and spirituality.

This is a candid, superbly written autobiography, providing the reader with a rare insight into the high and low experiences of an elite athlete".
Peter Snell

‘The best autobiography and possibly the best book I have read, full stop. Sports books are a dime a dozen but this book offers much, much more. It’s the story of Lorraine’s journey, the journey of a great athlete, but above all else, a great person.’Chris Pilone, Olympic coach to Hamish Carter
‘This is the most compelling autobiography I have ever read.’Peter Snell
‘If you ever thought you knew what was going on in the head of that champion you see on TV, you have no idea until you have read this book. For perhaps the first time, the complexity and intensity of the athlete’s psyche is revealed in this beautifully written memoir.’Rod Dixon, Olympic and World Championship medalist, and winner of the 1983 New York City Marathon
"When I read one of the early drafts of the book, I could not put it down until it was finished. I confess that more than a few tears were shed in between the laughter. Sometimes I did not know whether to laugh or cry".

Lorraine Moller - Olympian guest speaker at Leading Ladies' Marathon Expo - Spearfish USA

I can't resist: Here is a plug for my sister Lorraine:

"If you have people around who are telling you that, 'Oh you're too old to do this or that,' get away from them. Age is an attitude. In endurance sports, you get better as you get older." Lorraine Moller, Olympic Marathon Medalist.

Coming soon to a venue near you, the delightfully talented, wickedly funny, physically gorgeous Lorraine Moller! A New Zealand girl who came to America in 1978, Lorraine is a pioneer for a generation of New Zealand women's athletes, and a relentless advocate for above-board prize money in track and field. Lorraine is coming to speak at the Leading Ladies' Marathon Expo on Aug. 18 at 5 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Spearfish. I spent two days with Lorraine at the Des Moines Marathon in 2004, and I can vouch for an entertaining and enlightening presentation. There is no charge, and Leading Lady staff invites all who are interested in talent, tenacity and terrific times, to come join us for an entertaining hour.

Lorraine credits athletics with leading the women's movement in general, citing the sporting world as the ideal arena for social change.

The only woman to run the first four Olympic marathons for women, Lorraine was so sickly as a young child growing up in Putaruru, New Zealand, that doctors told her mother she would not survive. "I wasn't going to let that happen. There were things I wanted to do with my life" said Moller, who did plenty with her life! She recovered from her kidney ailments, and began running barefoot with her father, Gordon, through the pine forests of her hometown. By the time she was 14, she won her first national title ... still running barefoot. Eventually she made a career choice to follow her heart and devoted herself to running, which took her from the grass tracks of New Zealand to the bronze medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Along the way, she also became one of the leaders in ending the amateur hypocrisy in running, as well as becoming one of the pioneers in women's marathoning; she helped to get the women's marathon added to the Olympics in 1984. One of her greatest causes has been running, promoting, and writing about the Phnom Penh Marathon in Cambodia which was ravaged by years of genocides.

Lorraine has long believed in the mind-body connection and one of her strongest attributes is her mental preparation. She is truly a "Leading Lady" and exemplifies all that we stand for and support.

Lorraine's autobiography is published in October this year. I have read an early version. It is not your usual athlete bio book. There is no Ghost Writing and it is a great read! But, being her borther, I would have to say that!

My Heroine

Here is a photo of my sister, Lorraine, celebrating winning the 1984 Boston Marathon.

Wayne Clarke, kindly scanned a copy from his athletic club's photos and sent it to me - Thanks Wayne.

It has always fascinated me how Lorraine managed to have so much success as a runner over a breath-taking 28 years and at a time when women's distance running had so much depth and talent - Ingrid Kristiansen, Grete Waitz, Rosa Mota, Joan Benoit, Lisa Martin, the Japanese, all the other Kiwi women and more and more...

Lorraine never showed any athletic ability as a child, as far as I can recall. Her childhood was hardly remarkable other than the fact that it was physically robust. That could be said for almost every child in Putaruru. In fact, Lorraine was a rather sickly child who spent a lot of time in hospital and at the doctors. I vaguely recollect, at one stage the Drs ended up running out of options and Mum and Dad as good as brought her home to die or get better of her own accord (I am sure that she does not mind me saying this and Mum will eventually read this and get me to correct things, if I have got anything wrong). Mum resorted to alternative therapies. The one therapy I remember most vividly is "colour therapy". To state the obvious; Lorraine survived.

Her athletic ability began to show during h
er early adolescent years when she pretty much rewrote the regional and national age group record books for every running event in the country from about 220 yards and longer, including cross-country and road. As her brother, her physical ability never really registered with me during our teens, possibly because I could still dump her to the ground and force her into submission with a neck hold.

What I think set her out from the crowd was her dogged determination: She had the ability to push herself harder than anybody else. Did this ability come about as a result of her years of ongoing battles with serious illness as a child? It helped that she happened to be a real bright spark, leaping a couple of years in primary school to land in her big brother's class (Lorraine and I went through school together and even ended up doing nearly identical studies at Otago University). It certainly helped that she was coached from about 16yrs by the late John Davies using the Lydiard Method and she spent her three years at Otago University doing the long Sunday runs with the boys, including Richard Tayler. This time at Otago gave her the grounding for a long and successful career, as well the education for a life after running.

Lorraine is writing a book (No ghost writers for this athlete!) that will deal with these matters and by all accounts it is going to be a good read. I am not sure when it is coming out but it should not be too far off. Top triathlon caoch, Chris Pilone, who stayed with Lorraine this month got to read a draft of her book. This is what he had to say in his recent newsletter:

"To say I was glued to it would be an understatement. Would have to be the best I have read for many years and probably be in my top three of all time. Its probably a little way from the book shelves but when it gets there a must to buy".

When it comes out I will make sure that all my readers know about it.

Lorraine Moller - Hero's Journey

Hero's Journey
Lorraine Moller's Wings of Mercury
By Britta Kallevang
As featured in the July August 2005 issue of Running Times Magazine

"Lorraine Moller is a hero. A modern day Greek goddess, Moller has embarked on many odysseys throughout her life. She’s a four-time Olympic marathoner—the only woman to complete each of the 20th century’s Olympic marathons for women—holder
of the longest winning marathon streak ever, an undefeated masters runner, a mother, and a coach.

But that’s not the whole story. Moller is much, much more. The roles she fills and feats she’s accomplished are only that. Moller will not be fenced in by anything, not even her own legacy."

Sounds a bit over the top; but its still a good read for sports enthusiasts who are wondering "why?" (Gary)
