Do blood pressure drugs improve health, quality of life and longevity?

I have really enjoyed this debate about the effectiveness, or otherwise, of blood pressure drugs.
Has improving health been supplanted by the motivation for profit?
Nothing  in science is ever a closed subject.  Scientific progress is fueled by informed debate.  A scientist, including a doctor, welcomes detailed scrutiny.  Those that seek to stifle informed debate are anti progress and anti knowledge.

Play the ball and not the man!

Recently, I received a very, very expensive letter, delivered by hand, from one of the the most expensive law firms in New Zealand.  It was a letter threatening me with a law suit!  A doctor had done a meticulous fishing expedition of my online materials, much like that being done by the NSA Prism Spying Programme, aiming to dig up the dirt on Gary Moller.  I'm far from perfect.  He found something - a minor matter; but one sufficient to make a formal complaint to Med Safe.  Med Safe then passed this complaint onto the large drugs company concerned which then set the lawyers onto me.  All very over the top when the matter could have been resolved with a single phone call!

I suspect the motivation for this complaint and subsequent legal actions are the result of my comments in Walking Magazine about blood pressure drugs being largely ineffective.  This is a case of playing the man and not the ball.  A case of suppressing healthy debate about matters that affect countless lives.

"Hello, I wish to pass on my sincere gratitude to Mr Moller for his excellent articles on Blood Pressure.  I am a 67 year old female and been "on" meds for 30 years and at all stages experienced side effects of medications and run fowl of all sorts of G.P's for daring to say I experiencing side effects and the best thing that has happened is the internet and at hand knowledge which by some G.P's is frowned upon.  I should (I now know) never been prescribed them in the first place which I won't bore you all with the reasons for that statement but for reasons unknown to me now, I just kept swallowing them cause I told I had to.  Thats what my generation and upwards do.  My mother is 92 and in the last ten years had inpatient events and they all to do with medications so I say to her you have lived in spite of them.

I work at the hospital here, I read consultants letters from patients attending and the despair of patients as they - men and women, complain of side effects, indeed last week a 57 year old man made the decision to consultant to abandon all and take his chances to have "quality of life" he noted.
I have had to go off Atacand due to Pharmacs ruling so once again been subjected to new pills and my blood pressure is extremely high now on the taking, but the side effects of these different pills most debilitating.

My back ground is serious runner, now realise more serious at 5.00am when effects of pills wearing off, that was when I was at my best, only gave this up four years ago, I now tramp seriously, eat well and never done anything wrong.  I am on a mission to never have any of my four children prescribed any of this junk, my daughter is being monitered in her pregnancy very carefully as she had pre eclampsia in the last, the GP suggested BP but she said she would rather not and try an alternative.  Good for her, what she is getting is regular check ups and excellent care.  Last time it was pills given, into hosp and out within 24 hours!

Once again, thankyou, keep it up, my magazines been shown to all friends on medication, they express gratitude as well.

"Good on you Gary. I have just read your rebuttal in the July Walking Magazine of the ascerbic letter from a member of the medical profession about drugs and blood pressure.

I have not, and never have had, bp issues but I do have what the doctors tell me is too high a cholesterol level. I have been under pressure for 15 years (Iam 64) to take statins and have resisted, the reason being that I have seen no proof that high cholesterol will lead to heart attack or similar. Indeed, I have read an article (which I would like to attach to this email but you do not allow that) that specifically opposes the use (or should I say wholesale prescribing) of statins.

The doctors seem to have been influenced by the manufacturers and not taken a holistic view of the issue."

Thanks very much for the support.  Here is the letter this person is referring to, the offending article that was published in
http://www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz/ (you can subscribe here) and my riposte:

To the editor

Dear Frank,

As a keen reader of your magazine I was very concerned to read the May 2013 article by Gary Moller, suggesting that most blood pressure medications do not work and that many blood pressure medicines cause weight gain around the waist and therefore increase the risk of heart attack.

These and other statements in his article display an inadequate knowledge of the high blood pressure and a woefully inadequate knowledge of how blood pressure medications work.

There is a high risk that a gullible reader might stop their blood pressure medication and suffer a heart attack or, possibly more likely, a stroke.

I am amazed that Mr Moller can blithely comment that he cannot back up his 'sweeping statement' with research yet continue to disparage blood pressure medication.

I advise that you:

1. Consult the NZ Heart and Stroke Foundations for their comments about the article
2. Publish a statement that the opinions expressed in the article are not necessarily the opinions ot the magazine
3  Advise your readers that anyone who follows Mr Moller's advice and suffers a heart attack or stroke report Mr Moller to the Health and Disability Commissioner.

Thank you. I look forward to your response.

Feedback from a happy half marathon runner

"Hi there gary.
Once again your advice paid off. I got through my half marathon on the weekend pretty well. Didn't time it perfectly as the last 2km the body had done its dash , but i had done enough earlier on to get me through to the finish to do a pb. I went 3 min quicker than i have before.(1hr 27min) I've put the blow out with 2km to go down to a faster first 5km than usual. This was something i wanted to try out on myself to see how it would go. Next time it will be a notch slower over the first 5km.
Thanks again gary. Your free information and knowledge is 2nd to none."

I now have over 1,300 articles and e-books sitting online eagerly awaiting download.  This all free information that is funded by my tiny webstore. I count on the occasional person, out of the hundreds of thousands of readers who make use of these online freebies, to purchase something off me.  Thank goodness some do!  Otherwise this rather unique service would not exist.

Here's an example of what a Google search brings up: "gary moller training for a marathon".  Try Googling my name, plus any key word about health, nutrition or fitness and see what pops up.  For example try: "gary moller super smoothie".  There's a heap of information sitting out there.  I have been busy.

Client Feedback: From "Severely Handicapped" to Hiking the Waitakere Ranges in Eight Months

Hi Gary:
Robin arrived home yesterday after visiting you in Wellington last week. I just wanted to thank you most sincerely for your management of her back condition.

Eight months ago she was in chronic pain and severely handicapped. She was on the verge of applying for surgery, when I discovered your website (originally as a link from rustypanels!) and bought her your back pain book. I know you don’t claim to “cure” conditions like hers, but aim instead for effective management.

She has followed your three-fold regime faithfully, and has achieved a long pain-free period, allowing her to resume our lengthy hikes on the rugged tracks of the Waitakere Ranges.

So you deserve full credit for her recovery, but she also deserves credit for following the treatment plan meticulously, otherwise it wouldn’t have worked.

Our heartfelt thanks to you!

When Robin bounced through my door for the first time (Last week), I was enveloped in a huge, warm bear hug that took me completely by surprise.   It was hard to believe this was the same person I first dealt with earlier this year.

Sure she is not yet out of the woods and never will be (Most chronic health issues need to be managed to some degree for life); but now she is out and about living a life!

Success using flax oil to reduce skin Solar Keratosis

The following is very important for keeping your skin healthy and please forward this article to all of your friends who are on statins and low fat diets.

Its now about 1.5 years since I first noticed an improvement in my skin and over three years since I have been to my dermatologist to get my persistent pre-cancerous skin spots removed (Keratoses - not moles). They have all as good as disappeared without requiring any medical treatment usually consisting of burning them off with dry ice which has caused some scarring over the years. In fact, I have been getting more sun over the last year and my skin is the best it has been for years. How could this be?

About 10 years ago I went onto the low fat diet as most people do in order to reduce cholesterol My cholesterol levels had been creeping up). Now that I reflect on this, I realise that my skin started to deteriorate at about the time my fat intake was curtailed with the worst problem being that my sun damaged areas started to develop thick areas of flakey skin and even ulcertaed raw spots on the back of my hands and on my forehead that stung when exposed to salt water.  I had a few particularly nasty ulcerations on my hands which persisted despite treatments by the skins specialist.

Less than two years ago I switched away from the low fat diet and our family has steadily been working back to a healthy natural foods diet that includes healthy fats, including raw milk. I have really worked on getting fat soluble vitamins and minerals like silica into my daily diet.  I also began rubbing flax oil onto the most seriously damaged parts of my skin - forehead, ears and back of the hands. To my astonishment my skin began to heal.

Right now my skin is the best it has been in at least ten years with the worst sun damage completely clear.  The last skin kerastosis has dopped off my left ear as of about a week ago.  There is no evidence at all of the ulcerated areas on my hands and forehead.  They have completely disappeared.

I put this down to providing the body with a rich supply of Essential Fatty Acids, including cholesterol all of the Fat Soluble Vitamins and Active Elements Tissue salts.  The other thing is to take one's time - like months, if not years for natural therapies to work their magic.

The videos below have been made over a couple of years and show progress made (Look very carefully at the shots of the backs of my hands).  I will produce a new one soon that shows the progress made since then.

Customer feedback

Hello Gary
I have stayed off the caffeine and I have noticed an improvement in training times and overall energy.
I have been using the Whey Protein and I have noticed that I don't feel as sore after training as I did in previous years. This is especially true with my leg muscles.
regards
Simon

Sometimes simple measures make a huge difference to health and fitness.

Much of the advice that is dished out nowadays about sports training, nutrition supplements and so on can be confusing and even misleading - and even detrimental to health and physical performance.

the drive for commercial gain and ignorance of what really contributes to optimum health and physical performance confuse and distort the scientific literature.

The fat free diet is an unhealthy myth that causes obesity. The advice to guzzle endless gallons of corn sugar laced sports drinks while out training and competing reduces performance - and health. Caffeine in moderation is fine; but it can easily get you locked in its addictive grasp and become most unhealthy. And on it goes.

Each person is different. While there are some general rules of thumb to guide advice, this should be tailored and tweaked to the individual needs. Age, genetics and environment - including stress, exercise, illness, injury and diet all influence what a person may require to improve their nutritional status and ultimately, their health and fitness

Feedback from a Happy Camper

Hello Gary

I just wanted to let you know your website is turning into somewhat of a bible for me. I have just started "race-walking" beginning with a full marathon, then a 10k then a half marathon. I am now training midweek and was given the link to your website by Scottish Harriers. I have already found info on there that has been invaluable to me for personal health.... not to mention training aid with regards diet etc

So this is a thankyou. Thank you for volunteering your time and knowledge for people who cannot afford to go to a specialist or a nutritionist or visit the doctor for advice for things relating to living healthy and training healthy every time they have a question.

Thanks Gary, your website is invaluable
Kind regards
"M"

Training for a marathon

Some feedback

"Dear Gary,

This is just a short email to thank you for the 'training tips for running a marathon' eBook..... I ran my first marathon in June and am really pleased with how it went. I referred to your book throughout my training; I think it is well written, full of facts and good, commonsense information and inspiration.

I realised that, besides talking to other runners, I have relied only on your book. "
