Imported berries and risk of contracting hepatitis C

I would not be surprised if everyone in New Zealand is aware of the crisis striking at the heart of the NZ berry industry over hepatitis C contaminated berries imported from China which have made some people very ill.

We sell Sujon Blackcurrant powder which is grown and processed in Nelson, New Zealand.

Here is a most reassuring statement from Sujon:

"All the Blackcurrants Sujon use to process Blackcurrant Powder are grown in New Zealand and our frozen Blackcurrants sold in Supermarkets are also NZ grown".

My advice to readers is this:  "enjoy!"

My new Super Smoothie Recipe

The Super Smoothie comes up with a recipe that ticks all the right boxes nutritionally, is affordable and mostly sourced from New Zealand manufacturers.

The Super Smoothie is not a food supplement. It is a nutrient-packed meal. It is not additional to your groceries - it is part of your groceries.

It can replace one of your daily meals, such as breakfast. It is a recovery meal following hard exercise.  Share your smoothie with your family, especially your children.

It is perfect to drink daily during pregnancy and breast-feeding, for the elderly, the infirm, or anybody who needs a nutrient-packed meal without a huge number of calories.

It's the most affordable way to get all your nutrients - and more - without resorting to taking large numbers of vitamin pills.

"Was just writing to let you know that the recipe and powder you gave me is working a treat!
After my 10km run, my legs were feeling like they could get quite sore! They were achy on Sunday, but Monday I was totally fine! I can't believe it! Usually, I get the sorest muscles and they last four-five days!"

"I ran 59.51 so just made my goal and was 3rd in my age group so was super stoked! :-)"

Recipe

Storage and convenience

Mix the powders in the ratios above, then store the mix in 1-2 large glass containers, ready for quick use when in a hurry. Put the rest away, sealed tight in a cool dry place.

Add these according to taste and preferences (you'll need a blender if adding solids)

  • Seasonal fruits and/or vegetables.
  • Coconut cream. Coconut water.
  • Full cream non-homogenised milk (silver top).
  • Water (avoid fruit juice because too much sugar) if needed.
  • Blend.
  • Add one fresh free-range egg with 10 seconds to go (do not blend egg too long to prevent damage to the delicate nutrients).

How much protein do you need daily?

Here is a handy calculator and informative article about protein:

When to take it

Most people prefer to start the day with a Super Smoothie. It is a meal and energising!

You may find it refreshing and regenerating to have an extra Super Smoothie at the end of a hard day.  It is the obvious choice of refreshment following a hard physical workout.

It is perfect for after a hard exercise session. Many athletes find it convenient to carry a small pot of premix and a shaker with them to training, or when on the road, so that they can whip up a quick shake with either plain water or some other liquid such as milk, coconut milk or coconut water.

It is perfect for hiking. Compact, light - just add water.

Handy Tips

If a person, such as a child, must take a pill or two but has trouble getting them down, the thick creamy liquid of the Super Smoothie may do the trick as compared to water alone. The thick liquid will grab the pills and sweep them down the throat and mask any unpleasant taste.

It is not just for athletes

The Super Smoothie is ideal and totally safe for children, expectant and nursing Mums, the elderly and the infirm. It is great for anybody struggling with ill health or poor recovery following an injury. It is the superior alternative to multivitamins.

One Addition

Add 2-4 capsules of Algotene daily. This is nutrient-packed and includes potent fat-soluble anti-oxidants and a wide range of trace elements, including a little iodine and lithium.

New and improved Super Smoothie Ultra Protein is now back in stock

The most popular item ever published on this website is my original Super Smoothie Recipe.  However, things have been stalled for almost a year due to the base protein and nutrient powder being out of stock while it underwent reformulation by its USA manufacturer, Douglas Laboratories.

Perfect nutrition for all Kiwis on the go!

Athletes, stressed workers, vegetarians, conception, pregnancy and nursing, children, students, while convalescing, the elderly and the injured.

Vanilla is now back in stock, and the chocolate almond will be following shortly.

The Super Smoothie recipe was inspired by the Sustagen diets that enabled sustained a hardy bunch of runners to trot almost non-stop all the way from Auckland to Wellington about 1972. That race was won by Max Telford who consumed up to 14,000 calories during a running day.

My Super Smoothie is packed with the nutrients and calories that an athlete needs for sustained exercise and recovery and in a form that is easily and quickly digested. My Super Smoothie is ideal for anybody who needs to get nutrients into the body. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, convalescing after illness or injury, coping with chronic illness and combating the frailty of old age. The teenage growth spurt is a perfect time for a daily Super Smoothie.

When taking the Super Smoothie daily there is little or no need for additional vitamins and mineral supplements, unless advised otherwise by a health professional.

Designed for vegetarians

The Western lifestyle and food supplies are not at all vegetarian friendly.  Being a successful vegetarian requires a putting a lot of time and money into food selection and careful preparation and the modern lifestyle makes this very difficult.  Douglas Ultra Protein Plus's ingredients are designed for strict vegetarians, including vegans, and has a mix of nutrients and digestive aids that fill just about every nutritional gap a busy vegetarian has to deal with.

Just add water!
(Or anything else that presses your nutritional buttons!)

My Super Smoothie works perfectly on its own.  But if you want to give it a ton of extra punch, read on....
Currently out of stock

The Super Smoothie Recipe

  • Ripe Banana
    • Optional
    • And any other fruit you like to add
    • Douglas Laboratories Greens and RedsNot cheap but one scoop of this high value optional extra adds the antioxidant capacity of five fruit and vegetable servings
  • Fresh Free Range Egg (raw)
    • Wash the egg in warm, soapy water, or water with a tablespoon of bleach added and dry before cracking it open. This minimises the already tiny risk of salmonella infection.
    • Add the egg towards the end of the blending of the mixture to minimise damage to the delicate eggs proteins.
Blending
  • Add a little water, apple juice, yoghurt, full cream milk, coconut cream - the lot - or whatever suits you best as a nutritious liquid to dilute the mix.
  • Blend well, adding the egg towards the end of the process.
Drink the Super Smoothie straight away since the fruit and berries will oxidise quickly if left for long, even if refrigerated.

Are you a very special person?
If you are an athlete seeking the "edge" over your competition, a person struggling with medical issues, such as chemotherapy, a vegetarian with digestion issues, pregnant, nursing, a rapidly growing child or a fragile elderly person, you may benefit from additional nutritional support.

If you have challenging digestive issues such as with Crohn's, IBS, or candida
Contact me and I will help with working out how to get the nutrients you need to support your health and recovery.

How to use the Super Smoothie

Breakfast

It is perfect for breakfast for the person in a hurry. If additional calories are required, then add some Weetbix, or porridge, and blend it in. This makes a ready-made highly nutritious breakfast drink.

As a meal substitute

If you are ill and having trouble eating or keeping food down, then a liquid meal may ideal. You may need to experiment with the ingredients, such as the egg which may cause some problems with people who have poor digestion.

For weight (fat) loss

You've heard the message time and again: Cutting down on carbohydrates while increasing protein intake brings about consistent fat loss!  Here's what I recommend as a daily habit:
  • Have one half scoop of my Super Smoothie with the extras (egg, flax oil, berries, etc) for your breakfast.  This will easily keep you going through to at least morning tea.
  • At morning tea make one full shaker (~700ml) using one scoop of my Super Smoothie with nothing else other than water.  Have one glass of this before you eat or drink anything else (and only have something else if you really need it).  That extra could be a few nuts or a piece of fruit or carrot for example).  Put the shaker with the remainder of the Super Smoothie in the fridge.
  • Have another glass of Super Smoothie at lunchtime before you eat anything else.
  • Have another glass at afternoon tea time then polish off any remainder before home time.
  • Have only a small meal in the evening.  If you have the urge to snack then make a small drink with a couple of teaspoons of my Super Smoothie.

To prevent or reverse muscle wasting and for immune support

Protein and nutrient supplementation reduces wasting during a serious illness like cancer. It has been shown to bolster the immune system.

To reduce age-related weakness and wasting

Many elderly are so nutrient deficient that even an extra daily chocolate milk drink may improve the health of an elderly person! My Super Smoothie is much, much better than that! .

For Children and Teenagers

(Without the added extras for athletes). During a growth spurt - plus school sport etc - the need for rich supplies of nutrients skyrockets. My Super Smoothie with the Douglas Ultra Protein Plus will do the job. Give it as a treat between meals, including as an after school snack.

Picky eaters

If you have a "picky eater" in the family, if you can get just half a scoop of Douglas Ultra Protein Plus into them once a day, then you are on the way to having their nutritional needs covered.

Athletes

Take one Super Smoothie about 2 hours prior to a training session or contest and within an hour of finishing. It can be used to fortify meals, replacing unhealthy desserts and snacks. The more nutrient-packed food that is consumed, the more one can train and the better the recovery.

During Extended Competition or Training

The Super Smoothie with Douglas Ultra Protein Plus is perfect for recovery between competition in a tournament event that requires intense effort several times a day and/or over several days. It also perfect when doing endurance events that go on for many hours, such as 24 hour runs or bike rides.

When using the Super Smoothie for this kind of purpose, reduce any ingredients that may slow digestion or cause premature bowel activity - The egg and the berries and possibly the flax oil. It is recommended that you use the Balance Recovery Stack to aid recovery and hydration.

Nutrition during tramping and hiking

I like to use ultra protein as the base and then add small amounts of other nutrients, such as whole milk powder, greens and reds and even some whey protein, for nutrition during very long events, or when doing multi day hikes. This formulation is very quick and easy to digest. It can be mixed at home and divided up as individual servings in sealed plastic bags. All that is then needed is a light plastic decanter and some water which you can get along the way. The Super Smoothie servings can be quickly mixed and drunk and goes well with snacks, like dried fruit.

Lightweight and packed with nutrition!

How often and how much?

It depends. Take in a cup or two worth of Super Smoothie about every half hour to one hour (How much and how often depends on the nature of the physical activity, including the intensity and duration) so that there is a process of continual digestion. Just be aware that the higher the physical effort, the slower the digestion. This is further complicated when running because the gut slaps back and forth. Cycling and kayaking make for much easier digestion, so if it is a multi-sports event, most of the eating and drinking is during the cycling and kayak legs and much less so during the running.

If there is a lot of sweating, then drink plain water about 20 minutes into the Super Smoothie and about 10 minutes before the next Super Smoothie.

Practice and Practice and Practice!

If you plan to use the Super Smoothie in competition, or anything else for that matter, then you must practice using the exact formulation over and over again in training. You should also enter less important events and test the formulation under real race conditions. Keep tweaking the recipe so that you get it perfected to suit your special digestive quirks.

Hot weather - Cold Weather
If the conditions are cold, make up the Super Smoothie more concentrated. If the conditions are stinking hot, then you make the mix much more dilute so that there is more water taken in during any hour. Drink between Super Smoothies as required.

What else is needed for optimum nutrition?

Other than the Super Smoothie and a balanced diet, little else is needed by all (Athletes, the elderly, the infirm, teenagers, vegetarians and so on) for super nutrition. That's all!

Of course, there are people with very special needs that require special diets, that the advice on this page simply won't suit and I will do my best to assist if contacted.

How to Measure the Benefits

Some people worry about getting fat, others want to lose fat. Others want to pack on the muscle. Everyone wants to be properly hydrated. An effective nutrition programme will optimise body fat percentage, lean muscle, bone and body hydration. The most convenient way to do this is with the Salter 9106 Body Composition Scales. These are remarkably accurate and very motivating. I am selling these well under their retail price of NZ$140. I want all of my clients to have one in their home. I want them to see the benefits of following my advice about health and fitness. I want them to share their body composition results with me, no matter where in the world they live, so that I can help them further and do so on the basis of useful and accurate information.

Got the idea? Well, what are you waiting for? Go for it!

What do you recommend as a mulitvitamin for children?

What do you recommend instead of Nutrimon as a daily supplement for the 10 yr old boy who gets sores on his lips if run down.
Nutrimon has been great and easy, so something similar would be great.
Regards, Sarah

Gary:
Chewable children's multivitamins certainly are convenient; but I have had my reservations about some brands because, to make them palatable for children, these pills often have added artificial flavourings (Nutrimon is pretty good on this issue).  Another issue is the dose is often very low per pill (children have high metabolic demands and need more nutrients per kilo of weight as compared to an adult).

Children's vitamins have been slow movers. So we no longer stock any.

I am a fan of the Super Smoothie for children.  It gets children away from pills and teaches them how to prepare food from food ingredients while adding some specialty powders to boost the nutritional value.

Here is an example of a delicious and nutritious Super Smoothie for 2-3 fussy children:
  • Half scoop Super Smoothie mix
  • 2-4 dessertspoons of any infant formula powder from the super market
  • Add about 1/4 can of coconut cream
  • One cup of dark berries such as boysenberries, blue berries or black berries (fresh or frozen)
  • Add about one cup of full cream milk (silvertop)
  • One dessertspoon of Waihi Bush Flax Balance
  • Water to suit.
Optional Extras
  • One ripe banana
  • Yogurt or ice cream to tempt fussy eaters!
  • Add the same quantity of infant milk formula as for the Super Smoothie powder.  This reduces some of the grainy feel to the smoothie mix.
Good times to serve the Super Smoothie is with breakfast and immediately upon getting home from school.

Protein shakes as a dietary supplement

by Mary Ann Moller

I use protein shakes as a dietary supplement, as part of a healthy diet and to assist with my training.  In order to maintain a hard training schedule and get the most out of my workouts, it is crucial to supply my body with a nutrient dense diet in order to recover from training sessions and increase lean muscle mass.  While protein is an energy source, its main role is in tissue repair and growth.  Unlike fat and carbohydrates, the body does not store protein so its role as an energy source is limited.

Protein is comprised of 20 amino acids, 9 of which....

Breast feeding: Super Smoothie, milk production and energy levels

Hi Gary I am a mother of 2 (2 year old and 5mth old) and am interested in whether you would recommend your super smoothie as something to improve my energy levels and milk production, as I am breast feeding and have a hungry baby! Am currently walking as exercise around 3 times a week. Thank you for any advice you could provide.

The Super Smoothie is perfect for you and your baby.

Please add a dessertspoon of flax oil and a 1/4 can of coconut cream to 1/2 to one scoop of Super Smoothie and dilute with 600-700ml water, milk, or 50/50 of each.

You drink it in several dollops over the day and you will supply baby with enriched breast milk with the right mix of healthy fats and oils.

Keep it in the fridge until you have drunk the lot.

I am about to publish some research on my blog on "smart children" which supports what I am advising above.  Keep an eye out for it over the next several days.

What is the iron content of Garys Super Smoothie Mix?

Product page:
http://www.garymoller.com/Products.aspx?categoryid=52
Hi Would you please tell me the iron content (and the %RDI per serving) of Garys Super Smoothie Mix.

Thanks! Kindest regards,
"V"

There is no added iron.  This is one of several nutrients that I might add to the mix as a capsule or powder if a person needs it.  Most people don't need extra iron and we should not give people something they don't need.

If you have been told you need supplementary iron, it may be because of an excess of copper in the body, often associated with a past history of viral infection, candida, fungus, thyroid and adrenal problems.  These are common in women due to oestrogen dominance and may be associated with period problems such as heavy bleeding.  Giving extra iron may be necessary but may not have anything other than a short term benefit.

A hair tissue analysis is the best way to sort this out.

Which glucosamine and chondroitin is best for you?

"Hi Gary I frequently tramp/fly fish with a tramping pack doing multi-day/week trips up rocky river beds which are hard on the body. Although currently fit and healthy, as preventative action I would like to start taking glucosamine and chondroitin as preparation for the upcoming fishing season. I viewed one of your videos "Which glucosamine and chondroitin is best for you?", the Balance Joint Food for Athletes seems to fit the bill. Can you advise if you stock/supply this? Thank you. I am also interested to see what other products you would recommend to maintain health for someone 34 years of age, fairly fit and regularly tramping over tough undulating terrain for lengthy periods. Price is not a major concern, I would prefer to purchase quality products."
__________________________
Gary:
Things have moved on since that video was made with more products on the market, so let me give a quick rundown of the latest.

My daughter, Mary Ann, guiding on the Heaphy Track
The concoction of MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin that has been giving me the best feedback is this one here (Joint Flex).  Effectiveness, in terms of reports of improvement in joint function and reduced pain have been consistently good with this product.  While it is a little more expensive than others, it may be that it is of better quality - like taken from the top of the barrel while the cheaper ones are from the bottom, or something like that!

You are right to go for quality.

The key to staying in great health is to ensure that you have a rich intake of nutrients based on what we know tends to be depleted in healthy, active people.

If you are basically in good health this is what I would recommend:

These cover just about all the nutritional needs of an active person.  The hi-potency magnesium with co-factors is just what is needed during long and arduous hikes.

The reason I particularly recommend this combination is you can take it as sachets in your back pack along with a protein shaker.  Given the water from streams is safe, you can make up a refreshing smoothie drink as you go, thus saving on weight and bulk.  Whatever the quality of the rest of the food you take into the bush and whether you catch a fish or not, the Super Smoothie ensures you have a rich intake of nutrients, including protein.

When at home you can use the Super Smoothie as part of your breakfast and other meals.  Let your creativity flow with recipes!

How close to going for a run can I drink a Super Smoothie?

I am trying some of Gary's "Super yuk Smoothie" and would like to know how close before going out for a run could I consume it?

And is it ok to mix with egg and fruit before a run and leave it in the fridge for after the run?

How much powder and liquid would I use and can you mix it with milk rather than water?

Thanks, Pauline
____________________
Gary:
Pauline, I quite like the new name.  Can I use it?

Seriously: Taste is very much an individual matter and we can't please everyone.  The other point about taste is things that are very good for you do not always have to taste great.  Think of the cod liver oil Grandma used to dish out during Winter visits!

If the run is anything more than a leisurely trot, it is best not to have anything, other than water, within the hour of commencing the run.  Any closer and your risk suffering a tummy upset.

It is fine to have egg, fruit and just about anything else you like in your pre-run smoothie - SO LONG as you have it far enough out to be sure that the Smoothie has been thoroughly digested by the time you begin running. We all digest at differing rates, so the best advice is to experiment with ingredients and timing.

The Smoothie can be left in the fridge for several hours, but not if you add ingredients like fruit which will go brown and gluggy.  Now that is "yuk!".  It is fine to use milk but give preference to a mix of coconut cream/milk and water.

Have half a scoop of Super Smoothie mix for your breakfast Smoothie which you can add all kinds of goodies such as raw egg, flax oil, fruit, coconut cream/milk and even a weetbix!  Then, for over the day, make up 700ml with one full Super Smoothie scoop, with a mix of water and coconut cream/milk.  Shake well and have one glass at 10am, another at noon, another at 3pm and the rest, if there's any, before dinner.  Keep it in the fridge between feeds.

This regime will ensure a steady dribble of high quality nutrients into your body as opposed to a single daily deluge which is usually the case.  You will find that any excess fat (if you have any) will drop off while preserving strength and energy.

How to get ripped and stay ripped while on a university hall diet

Here's an essay by my daughter, Mary-Ann, about how to stay healthy and lean while living in a university hostel. Weight gain and generally becoming unhealthy are serious problems faced by many students while living in catered hostels.

If you have children living in a university hostel, you might want to pass this article onto them.
Gary

How to GR and SR while on a University Hall Diet

By Mary-Ann Moller (  sport and exercise nutrition at University of Otago)

Living at a catere
d hall can bring about its challenges when trying to stay on a strict diet.  Not only are you not always provided with the exact meal that you would ideally like, you are also faced with a lot of tempting food that is literally put under your nose at every meal.  However, living in a catered hall definitely has its perks and I believe that with a wee bit of education and self-control, you can eat your way to getting ripped and staying ripped!  Here are a few wee tips and pointers that I have put together for you.

-Firstly, avoid refined carbohydrates (CHOs).  For those of you  that don’t know what these are, these are processed food items usually made from white flour with added sugar.  They come in the form of pasta, white breads, desserts, cakes and slices.  These foods are high in energy and low in nutrients.  Therefore, if you don’t go out and burn this energy off (by exercising), it will get converted and stored as fat!  “A minute on the lips, a lifetime on the hips!”
-Where possible, replace refined CHOs with unrefined alternatives.  For example, instead of white bread choose the DENSE and WHOLEGRAIN varieties.  As its name suggests, wholegrain breads are the ones where you can actually see the GRAIN.  At my hall, Burgen and Ploughmans is where it’s at!  Instead of white rice, choose brown.  Wholegrain foods have a low Glycaemic Index (GI), which means that they release energy slowly into your blood system.  This prevents you from getting spikes in your blood-sugar levels, which is the cause for sugar cravings and potential binges.
-Try not to overload on the starchy CHOs such as potato and bananas.  Starch is sugar!  You can still enjoy these, but in moderation.  A great alternative for potato is pumpkin, which is low in starch.
-Take a piece of fresh fruit at every meal.  Even if you don’t eat it at the meal, take it for a snack to have later, in between meals when you get hungry.  You should be eating a minimum of 2 pieces of fresh fruit every day.
-Don’t drink the juice.  Fruit juices are incredibly high in sugar.  Just drink water.  You will not miss the juice.
-Steer clear of the hot chocolate machine.  It is just like drinking a cup of sugar.  Save this for the occasional treat. Again, just drink water.
-At every lunch and dinner there is a delicious salad bar.  Load up on the salads!  Fresh veges are the best source of many vitamins and nutrients.  Leafy green veges are high in iron, vitamin K and folate, so load up on the baby spinach leaves and broccoli.  If there is tuna/salmon or hard boiled eggs, eat plenty of these as they are high in protein which you want to eat lots of.
-Avoid anything deep fried.  Pretty obvious why, and what foods these involve.  The most common at my hall is the chips.
-Ditch the jam. You are just spreading sugar (and no nutrients) onto your toast.  If you must have something sweet then go with the honey, this is atleast a natural sugar, but go easy on it.  Hit up the marmite as it his high in iron and B vitamins.
-At most halls you are presented with some form of baked good or dessert at every lunch and dinner, on every day.  There is absolutely no reason why you should be consuming this amount of empty calorie and nutrient deprived food.  Just walk straight past the dessert section of the servery and don’t even look in it’s direction.  You don’t need it.  And you certainly don’t need it if you want to get ripped and stay ripped.  These things should be reserved for the odd treat maybe once or twice a week. You are in control of what you choose to eat!
-You pretty much want to be trying to follow a diet high in protein and low in CHOs.

PROTEIN!
Some of the meals at my hall are a bit lacking in the amount of protein required to really get ripped.  Protein is not only essential for building and repairing muscle, but also for weight management.  When you ingest protein, this sends signals to the brain telling you that you are full, this is also known as satiety (the sense of feeling satisfied).  What you want to do is drip small amounts of protein into your diet over the entire day.  This will reduce you getting really hungry and potentially pigging out on something that you shouldn’t.

Some high protein snack would include things like tuna, meat, eggs, cheese, natural yoghurts.  It would be handy to have your own supply of these types of foods to have either before a meal or in-between meals.  As these types of high protein snacks are not that easy to whip up quickly as you are running between lectures, protein shakes can be a great alternative.  Having up to 3 protein shakes a day can be a great addition to yo
ur hall diet.  Make sure you are making your protein shakes with water and not milk, otherwise you will be taking in a lot of sugar from the lactose in milk.

As with any diet, it must be sustainable.  There is no point in losing weight if you are going to put it back on.  In fact, this kind of yoyo dieting can mess with your metabolism and do you long-term harm.  The best type of weight loss is incredibly slow and is over a long period of time.  Those that lose it the slowest, will be the ones that keep it off.  It is about creating a healthy lifestyle to improve your quality of life. When it comes to health and fitness, there are no quick fixes, but there are long term rewards!

Yours in good health,

Mary-Ann

Just 1-2 scoops of my Super Smoothie supplies more than the minimum daily dietary allowance for protein, vitamins and minerals - everything from magnesium to folate! (Shouldn't that be "A-Z" Gary?).

The Super Smoothie allows me to reduce the number of different pills that I need to prescribe a person because it provides a comprehensive baseline of all the nutrients a person needs for optimum nutrition.

Super Smoothie product page.
In fact, I am going one step further by building up an inventory of specialist powders that can be added to the Super Smoothie (No more pills - Yeeha!), such as creatine, magnesium and adrenal powder (Some of these are prescription only, so you will need to consult me first).

At only NZ$80 the Super Smoothie works out to be great value when you consider what it costs for the protein on its own and then the cost of all the individual vitamins, minerals and the rest.

I am running a promotional special to kick off sales by giving away the best Smoothie Mixer I have been able to find with your first purchase (one only per person).  This is for New Zealand customers only and only for as long as I have shakers to give away - Sorry the rest of the World - you miss out; but rest assured the Super Smoothie is still a great product that stands on its own merits!

Get your free protein shaker with your
first purchase (NZ deliveries only and
only while stock last).

Go on - give it a go!
And here's my guarantee - If you are not 100% satisfied, send it back, even if its half used, and I'll refund you the purchase price 100%. (This applies to all my products, by the way).

Here is the search link that takes you to the product pages for my chocolate and vanilla Super Smoothie.

I am a diabetic, and would like to know how many carbohydrates are in your super smoothie recipe?

I am a diabetic, and would like to know how many carbohydrates are in your super smoothie recipe?  I control my diabetes with diet and exercise (I walk 4 miles a day).  I enjoy your website and find it filled with valuable information.  Thanks for a response.

Do you think beetroot juice improves athletic performance?

"Do you think drinking beet juice is a good thing? And can you get the benefits from a tablet"

Richard

Gary replies:
Richard, I would not be surprised if drinking beet juice will bring about an improvement in athletic endurance. This is because most athletes are lacking sufficient nutrients in their bodies to supply the needs of intense and exhausting exercise.

Nitrates (natural ones found in food including beetroot) are essential for maintaining flexible and relaxed arteries and nitric oxide for directing blood to the right places. If the diet is poor in foods containing these nutrients then performance is, of course, going to improve if big doses are then introduced into the diet.

The other action which is not discussed in the article is the powerful antioxidant effect of all plants that are bright; especially the deep red and black pigmented vegetables, fruits and berries - that includes beetroot. Intense exercise causes a storm of free radicals that the body soaks up and neutralises using antioxidants. If antioxidant capacity is poor, exhaustion will rapidly set in and recovery will be poor.

If you think the results of the beetroot study are good, then read on....

I am a good example of the benefits of careful assessment of nutrient needs, first with a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis almost three years ago and then adding specific nutrients to meet the needs of work and sport. Being 56 years old and having trained and competed in sport non-stop since my early teens one can be assured that I have peaked long ago! At 56, I should be slowing down, so any performance improvements from here on have to be taken very seriously.

Now, here is the record today as compared to the exact competition situation two seasons ago in mountain biking: I am riding as fast as I was 20 years ago and fully 15-20 minutes faster over each of a series of five races as compared to when I was 54 years old. Each race is less than two hours duration and one can ride a very long way in 15-20 minutes. I am not doing any extra training. I am just healthier.

The reason for the performance gains is mostly due to improved nutrition, including a couple of "sports specials".

As a matter of interest, beta alanine is the amino acid the body uses for producing nitric oxide. This is sold on its own and in Balance Recovery Stack.

The most effective antioxidant for improving performance and protecting the muscles from damage is Astazanthin.

Other great sources of antioxidants are found in dark berries and all bright berries, including the skin of kumara. Load up Berry Brights and Fruitful Greens are concentrated sources of antioxidants that can be added to your Super Smoothies.

I need more information about the Super Smoothie for hiking

In Walking NZ Issue 130/2008 your article talks about smoothies during hikes etc. I would like to know more please. My husband and a friend are about to begin the Te Araroa Trail from Cape Reinga. They are in their early 60's and have been training for about 6 months walking 2/3 hours every day in varying terrain.

Question: What are the dry ingredients mixed with and in what proportions. I presume you have a container that it's all put into, shaken and then consumed. I read that smoothies must be used within 20 minutes before they start to lose their goodness.

Regards Jessie

Gary:
Jessie This is a quick reply between clients. Here is the recipe for the Super Smoothie which happens to be the most downloaded page on my site: http://blog.garymoller.com/2008/08/super-smoothie-recipe-updated.html

I have used it with success during hikes, keeping the dry ingredients in a sealed plastic bag and mixing it up with water in a decanter as we go. Of course there are no berries or bananas, oil etc in this one. I use infant formula (minus the melamine!) as the nutritious filler. Works well.

As of a few months ago, we now have a new option that I am very favourable to. This is the Balance Ultimate Recovery Stack which is a bit like a fruit juice that contains all of the ingredients that I recommend as extras to the Smoothie - plus a lot more.

Use the Balance Ultimate Recovery Stack when on the road and in the bush and use the Super Smoothie when at home base where you have refrigeration, a blender and all the healthy ingredients, like berries and home made yoghurt. Use the Balance Ultimate Recovery Stack during long hikes, bike rides and runs, either making it up as you go or pre-mixed in your water bottle.

The Super Smoothie is best consumed right away before the ingredients oxidise.
